Firefly is an American space western drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon, under his Mutant Enemy Productions label. Whedon served as an executive producer, along with Tim Minear. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things". The show explores the lives of some people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In this future, the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures. Firefly é uma série de ficção científica criada pelo escritor/diretor Joss Whedon, criador de Buffy: A Caça Vampiros, Angel e Dollhouse, com sua companhia de produção Mutant Enemy Productions. Seu ambiente futurista naturalista, modelado a partir de temas dos filmes de Western tradicionais, apresenta um cenário de ficção científica atípico para a narrativa. Whedon também trabalhou como produtor executivo, junto com Tim Minear. A história da série se passava no ano de 2517, após a chegada dos humanos em um novo sistema solar, e segue as aventuras da tripulação renegada da Serenity, uma nave espacial classe Firefly. O elenco principal retrata os nove personagens que moram na Serenity. Whedon vendeu a idéia da série como "nove pessoas olhando dentro da escuridão do espaço e vendo nove coisas diferentes". O programa explora as vicissitudes de pessoas que lutaram no lado perdedor de uma guerra civil, e também a cultura pioneira que existe na borda do sistema solar. Além disso, é um futuro onde somente duas super-potências sobreviventes, os Estados Unidos e a China, fundiram-se para formar o governo federal central, chamado de Aliança, resultando na fusão das duas culturas também.
