Matsumoto Castle - Japan’s Famous Black Castle Papercraft by Tetsuji Morita

This beautiful Matsumoto Castle papercraft was created by Japanese designer Tetsuji Morita and originally published on his former website, PaperGrade by Zen. Completed in 2003, the project represents the castle’s main keep, the smaller buildings connected to the complex, the large stone walls and a green base that greatly improves the presentation of the finished model.

The papercraft occupies twelve sheets and was released in PDO format, so the files need to be opened with Pepakura Viewer before they can be viewed and printed. The old PaperGrade by Zen website is no longer online, but fortunately its page and download files were preserved by the Wayback Machine. At the end of this post, together with the link to download the model, I will also provide a link to download the free version of Pepakura Viewer.

Tetsuji Morita appears to have created his models simply as a hobby, but his collection shows that he had a very good understanding of three-dimensional modeling and the process of turning virtual objects into printable paper parts. In addition to Matsumoto Castle, he also designed cars, aircraft, imaginary vehicles and spacecraft inspired by science-fiction movies and television series.

Unfortunately, I could not find much biographical information about Tetsuji Morita beyond the material he published on his former website. Even so, the number and variety of his projects show that he was a very dedicated modeler. It is truly impressive to think that such a complex and detailed papercraft was developed as a hobby project and then made available for free.

The photographs illustrating this post were taken by a Japanese modeler known as Nipponshiro, who runs the blog Ie de Tanoshimu Nihon no Shiro. In addition to documenting the completed model, he also shared some important observations about its construction.

According to Nipponshiro, the project was designed so that many of its parts are assembled as small boxes and then stacked together, almost like building blocks. This system makes the castle quite strong and helps prevent the walls and towers from becoming distorted. He also praised the precise fit of the parts and the texture of the stone walls, which he considered realistic and very attractive.

On the other hand, assembling several similar parts can become a little repetitive. The roofs also require special attention because there are no very clear markings showing exactly where they should be positioned. For this reason, it is a good idea to test the position of each roof before gluing it permanently, avoiding small alignment problems.

The small ornaments placed at the tops of the roofs are among the most delicate parts to glue. Despite these difficulties, Nipponshiro classified the overall level of the project as intermediate. He believes that a modeler working regularly should be able to complete the castle in approximately one week.

The real Matsumoto Castle is located in the city of Matsumoto, in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture. It is famous for its large dark walls, which contrast with the white details and inspired its popular nickname, the Crow Castle. Its elegant and slightly mysterious appearance has made it one of the most recognizable and frequently photographed castles in Japan.

The history of the site began with an older fortification known as Fukashi Castle. At the end of the sixteenth century, the complex underwent major changes and received the name Matsumoto Castle. The main keep was constructed during this period and managed to survive wars, political changes and even plans to demolish its structures.

Today, Matsumoto Castle is considered a National Treasure of Japan. One of its most interesting characteristics is the combination of defensive buildings constructed during a period of conflict with areas added later for more peaceful activities, including a tower intended for viewing the Moon.

This papercraft captures the appearance of the real castle very well, with its many levels, overlapping roofs, smaller towers and large stone walls. As fotografias que ilustram este post foram feitas por um modelista japonês conhecido como Nipponshiro, responsável pelo blog Ie de Tanoshimu Nihon no Shiro. Além de registrar o modelo já terminado, ele também compartilhou algumas observações importantes sobre o processo de montagem.

Segundo Nipponshiro, o projeto foi pensado para que várias peças fossem montadas como pequenas caixas e depois empilhadas, quase como blocos de construção. Esse sistema deixa o castelo bastante firme e ajuda a evitar que as paredes e torres fiquem deformadas. The Electro-Magnetic Aero-Carriage Steampunk Paper Model by Richard Cherry

This extraordinary paper model represents the Electro-Magnetic Aero-Carriage, a fantastic steampunk flying machine created by American artist and designer Richard Cherry, known on DeviantArt as SiriusArtWorks.

The inspiration for this model comes from a short fictional story created by the artist himself. According to this narrative, the plans for the machine were discovered deep inside an old forgotten vault beneath New York City by archaeologist Alixander Fletcher. The documents, supposedly dating from the late nineteenth century, revealed the designs for an anti-gravity electromagnetic flying carriage that, according to rumor, had been conceived by Nikola Tesla himself.

This imaginary origin fits perfectly with the figure of Tesla, who is frequently associated in fiction with electrical experiments, extraordinary inventions and technologies far ahead of his time. The Aero-Carriage seems to have come directly from an alternate reality in which electricity, magnetism and Victorian engineering allowed mankind to conquer the skies long before the arrival of modern aviation.

The steampunk aesthetic can be seen in almost every detail of the vehicle. Its wood-covered fuselage resembles an old carriage, while the copper parts, metal structures, pipes, rivets, exposed mechanisms and weathered surfaces suggest an experimental machine built during the final years of the nineteenth century.

Steampunk is a retrofuturistic style that combines elements of the Victorian era and the Industrial Revolution with imaginary technologies. Steam-powered machines, gears, airships, automatons and fantastic electrical inventions coexist with clothing, buildings and vehicles inspired by the nineteenth century, creating an alternative vision of the past in which many technological advances happened decades earlier.

Richard Cherry is an American artist and model designer interested in steampunk, architecture, fantasy, nature and esoteric themes. These influences can be seen throughout his work, which often combines imaginary machines and buildings with detailed textures and a very distinctive aged appearance.

On his former blog, Sirius Art Works, Richard documented several stages in the development of the Aero-Carriage. According to the artist himself, the project took approximately five months of intermittent work and went through many modifications. Before completing the model, he also completely redesigned the textures to achieve the result he wanted.

After all this work, the Electro-Magnetic Aero-Carriage was finally completed and published for download in Richard Cherry’s DeviantArt gallery in January 2011.

I have also included a close-up image of the cockpit in this post so that everyone can see just how detailed this model really is. The interior features a padded seat, wooden panels, instruments, gauges, controls and several small elements that help bring this fantastic flying machine to life.

As you can see from the images, this is not a model recommended for beginners. The assembly includes many small parts, curved surfaces and delicate details, but the final result will certainly reward all the time, patience and care invested in its construction.

You will find the model in two formats: PDF and PDO (Pepakura), so you can use the PDF to print the parts and the PDO as an assembly guide, since it allows you to view the model in 3D. A inspiração para o modelo vem de uma pequena história fictícia criada pelo próprio autor. Os documentos, datados do final do século XIX, mostravam os planos de uma carruagem voadora eletromagnética antigravitacional que, segundo rumores, teria sido projetada pelo próprio Nikola Tesla.

Saleen S7 Super Car Papercraft In 1/24 Scale - by SeyforeG

Created by the talented Russian designer SeyforeG Design Papercraft, this impressive paper model reproduces the Saleen S7-R GT1, one of the most iconic racing versions of the legendary American supercar Saleen S7. The model represents car number 66 and faithfully captures the aggressive lines, aerodynamic profile and distinctive details that made the S7-R one of the standout competitors in GT and endurance racing during the early 2000s.

The Saleen S7 was developed by Saleen Automotive in collaboration with Steve Saleen and British engineer Ray Mallock, who was responsible for the chassis, suspension and aerodynamic design. Officially unveiled in 2000 during the Monterey Historic Races in California, the car was conceived from the very beginning to compete in the world's most prestigious endurance events. From this ambition came the Saleen S7-R GT1, a competition version specifically built for championships such as FIA GT, the American Le Mans Series and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans.

According to the designer, this model was created with special attention to the shapes and proportions of the original vehicle. The parts were refined and carefully organized to simplify the assembly process without compromising the final appearance, resulting in an elegant and highly accurate papercraft model. Although it is not an excessively complex build, it does require patience and dedication to achieve the best results.

This papercraft is offered in two formats: a nine-page printable PDF and a .PDO file, which can be viewed with the Japanese program Pepakura Viewer Free Version. You can then use the PDF templates to print the model pieces normally, while the PDO file serves as an excellent assembly guide, as it allows you to view the model in 3D and rotate all parts freely during construction. This is especially helpful for those who don't have much experience with papercraft.

Ravage Doggy Mecha Creature Papercraft In PDO Format by Szigetiart

Created by the talented designer Szigetiart and originally published at the official Pepakura Community website, this curious papercraft called “Ravage Doggy” is a great example of the creativity and technical quality often found in the international papercraft scene. Combining stylized shapes, mechanical details and a playful yet slightly menacing appearance, the model has a strong visual presence and will certainly appeal to fans of robotic creatures, science fiction and videogame-inspired characters.

The model is hosted at the Pepakura Community website, an online platform managed by Tamasoft, the Japanese company responsible for creating Pepakura Designer and Pepakura Viewer, two of the most important programs in the world of papercrafting. For many years, the Pepakura Community has served as a meeting point for designers and hobbyists from all around the world, allowing creators to publish their works, exchange experiences and share original templates in PDO format.

Unlike traditional PDF papercrafts, PDO files are interactive and can be viewed in three dimensions through the Pepakura Viewer software. This allows users to rotate the model, zoom in on specific parts and better understand the assembly process before cutting and folding the pieces. Because of this, PDO-based models are especially popular among more experienced hobbyists and designers who create detailed and complex projects.

To view and print this model, you will need the Free Version of Pepakura Viewer. When opening the file, a password request window may appear. Simply ignore it and click the option “Open with Pepakura Viewer,” which appears just below the password field. The model will open normally in viewing mode and can be printed without problems.

Touhou Project - Alice Margatroid Papercraft Figure - by RageBurster

This beautiful papercraft of Alice Margatroid, from the famous Touhou Project universe, was created by the talented Japanese designer and model maker RageBurster. Known for producing extremely detailed anime-style papercrafts, RageBurster has become very respected among advanced papercraft enthusiasts because of the elegance, complexity and almost “collectible figure” appearance of his models. His creations usually feature flowing clothes, dynamic poses, tiny details and delicate structures that transform simple sheets of paper into true display pieces.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Alice Margatroid is one of the most popular characters from the Touhou Project series, created by the legendary Japanese developer and musician ZUN. Touhou began as a series of “bullet hell” style games, but over the years it became a huge cultural phenomenon in Japan, inspiring thousands of fan arts, animations, songs, manga, cosplay and, of course, papercrafts. Alice is portrayed as a mysterious magician specialized in controlling magical dolls and puppets, something that perfectly matches her elegant and almost theatrical visual style.

This papercraft captures all these characteristics very well. The detailed dress, the ribbons, the layered clothing and the expressive face make the model look almost like a real anime figure. This helps a lot, especially for those who are still not very experienced with papercraft.

Even though this is a small and relatively simple model, it perfectly captures the elegant and mysterious look of one of the most beloved characters in the game. With her iconic white mask, needle-shaped weapon and red cloak, Hornet became one of the great symbols of the Hollow Knight universe and gained a huge fanbase around the world​.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Hollow Knight was developed by the Australian independent studio Team Cherry and originally released in 2017. Mixing exploration, action and fast-paced combat in a vast underground kingdom called Hallownest, the game quickly became one of the most respected indie titles of recent years. Its hand-drawn visuals, melancholic atmosphere, memorable soundtrack and gameplay inspired by classic “Metroidvania” games helped turn Hollow Knight into a true phenomenon among videogame fans.
