Build Your Own Old West Town - 23 Western Buildings And Accessories
by Lon Safko

Old West town papercraft diorama with saloon, general store, sheriff's office and other Western buildings along a dusty street in HO scale.

If you enjoy Old West papercrafts, this is one of those collections that deserves a special place in your favorites. Created by Lon Safko and available on the Secret of the Lost Dutchman website, this fantastic set brings together 23 printable paper models that allow you to build an entire Western town in HO scale (1/87).

The collection includes practically everything you would expect to find in a small town of the American Old West: a saloon, a sheriff's office, a hotel, a railway depot, a general store, a land office, a church and even an undertaker's establishment. There are also houses, miners' cabins, barns and several accessories, including a covered wagon, an old water tank, figures and Fort McDowell.

All 23 models are available as free PDF downloads, and you don't need to register or provide a password. Just choose the buildings you like, download the files, print them and start assembling your own Western town. Since the models are in HO scale, they are also perfect for model railway layouts, but nothing prevents you from using them in dioramas, RPG adventures or wargames.

What makes this collection even more interesting is the story behind it. The paper models were created to bring to life the setting of the four-book series Secret of the Lost Dutchman, inspired by the legends and history of Arizona. The town itself was inspired by Swilling's Mill, an early settlement that eventually became Phoenix, the capital of Arizona.

The Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine is one of the most famous legends of the American Southwest. According to the story, a rich gold mine was hidden somewhere in Arizona's Superstition Mountains, and its exact location was lost after the death of Jacob Waltz, the man known as the Lost Dutchman. Whether the mine ever existed as described remains a mystery, but the legend has inspired books, films and treasure hunters for generations.

I particularly like collections like this because you can start with just one or two buildings and gradually expand your diorama until you have a complete town, with streets, shops, houses and all those little details that make a miniature scene come alive. You can even print some buildings more than once to create a larger settlement.

Another nice detail is that the website also provides basic assembly tips, including suggestions for printing, cutting, folding and reinforcing the finished models. All downloads are available directly from the project website, which is always a welcome bonus.

If you like Western movies, historical architecture, model railways or simply enjoy building miniature worlds out of paper, this collection is certainly worth a look.

And if 23 models aren't enough to build the Old West town of your dreams, you can always combine this collection with other Western buildings and dioramas previously featured here on Papermau. At the end of this post, you will find links to four more Old West papercraft projects that can help you expand your little town even further.

The Ephemeral Museum - Hope Valley City Papercraft Diorama
Assembled by Aaron Akselrud

I'm happy to share on the blog this delightful project by my friend Aaron Akselrud, from the United States.

He built an entire miniature town using only free paper models from the Hope Valley Printables website,  a beautiful collection of richly illustrated Old West-style buildings.

The models include saloons, warehouses, blacksmith shops, libraries, and hotels, all with that small 19th-century town charm.

Aaron arranged the models on a cardboard base and added amazing details like a painted mountain backdrop, characters on balconies, horse-drawn carriages, an old car, and even a dirt road made using fine sandpaper, a clever and realistic touch.

Below is the note that Aaron himself wrote about his experience. What began as a small project with one or two buildings became a gift of joy for his great-grandchildren:

"Some years back, more than I can remember, I developed an interest in cutting out and building paper models. I bumped into the Canon Creative Park website and assembled many of their architectural models.

I also purchased online books which were cut out paste and assemble. And then fortunately, I bumped into Papermau. I visited the site on a daily basis for new projects and I was intrigued by the Hope Valley project.

What started out as a simple one or two building project it evolved into a 17-building mini city complete with background and ground textures. To create a road, I used fine sandpaper which I cut and trimmed to size.

When the project was finally completed, I found it difficult to bring it upstairs from my basement workroom. However, after some effort, I brought it up and delivered it to my great grandchildren, they loved it.

I look forward to many many more projects from Papermau, thank you for being there."

Many thanks to Aaron for sharing his work and story. I hope it inspires other paper model lovers to start (or keep building) their own miniature worlds.

A little further down you'll find the link to the Hope Valley Printables website, if you want to create your own Wild West town.

Eles adoraram.

About the Ephemeral Museum:

I "am in the paper modeling" since 2005, although I've had contact with paper models from my childhood in the 1970s, via magazines that were sold sporadically in newsagents. I remember magazines with houses to build and dioramas/playsets of airports, western forts, nativity scenes and the like.

With the advent of the internet what happened was simply a revival of the papercraft hobby for me and many other people of my generation. Today I am opening a new session here on the blog, the Ephemeral Museum , which is a place where I will show some of the models that I built all these years.

I would also like this to be a space where all modelers friends could show their work, so if anyone wants to participate in this "museum", just send photos of your work and a few words, if you want, to the e-mail:

mautherous@gmail.com

All who submit their work will be published, without exceptions.

When Calls The Heart - Papercraft Buildings To Create A Nostalgic Village - by Hope Valley Printables

The Hope Valley Printables is a delicate and lovingly crafted blog that offers dozens of free paper models inspired by the fictional town of Hope Valley, from the TV series When Calls the Heart.

These downloads are a true gift for modelers of all levels, bringing together simple yet elegant pieces that form a charming countryside town with a nostalgic atmosphere.

What’s most impressive is the variety: houses, shops, a church, school, train station, saloon, blacksmith’s workshop, doctor’s office, dress shop, sheriff’s office, bakery, flower shop, and more.

Each model is provided as a ready-to-print PDF, formatted for A4 or letter-size paper, with clear instructions, well-drawn templates, and soft, pleasant textures, ideal for anyone looking to build a quaint, country-style village with a warm, cohesive look.

The difficulty level is accessible, making the project perfect for beginners and experienced modelers alike who are looking for something light and relaxing to build.

Beyond the buildings themselves, the site also offers extra scenery elements: alternate rooftops, decorative façades, trees, and even seasonal variations, such as a Christmas-themed version of the town, adding a festive touch to the collection.

One especially charming aspect is the presence of the blog’s anonymous creator, always discreet yet kind and attentive in the comments, responding to questions about assembly or printing with warmth and generosity.

The overall aesthetic of the models is reminiscent of vintage children’s books or classic postcard illustrations, everything is delicate and clearly made with a love for detail.

It’s easy to imagine one of these paper towns displayed on a shelf, or as part of a themed decoration for holidays or special occasions.

While the blog draws inspiration from When Calls the Heart, the style of the buildings is universal enough that any fan of dioramas, rural scenery, or historical settings can adapt them into their own version of Hope Valley, or invent an entirely new paper town from scratch.

Visiting Hope Valley Printables feels like stepping into a parallel world where things move more slowly and there’s time to cut, fold, glue, and truly enjoy the process.

In an increasingly digital and fast-paced world, handmade projects like these feel even more special, rare gems that invite quiet contemplation.

I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the site: download a few models and start building. Little by little, sheet by sheet, building by building, you’ll see a whole tiny town come to life before your very eyes, made entirely of paper and imagination.

Red Dog Saloon Paper Model - A 2011 Papermau Original Model
Revised Version - Download Now!

With a week of delay, here is the Red Dog Saloon, ready for download. This is a revised version of the original model posted here in 2011, in the early months of the blog's existence. Who would have thought that Papermau would still be active after more than a decade, right?

Well, the model is basically the same, I just modified some parts, like the roof, to optimize the assembly. I also created an illustration showing where each piece goes, a sort of assembly guide.

As you may have noticed, despite continuing to publish at least one post daily, I haven't been posting as much as before because I lack time.

The hustle and bustle of real life has not allowed me to dedicate myself to the blog as I would like, but I always try to post at least one new thing a day because, as I've said many times before, this blog is not profitable but therapeutic.

I really enjoy the hobby and like cutting and folding ordinary pieces of paper and seeing things take shape. Even today, after so many years, I still learn, get distracted, am surprised, and mentally rejuvenated with each assembly I do, whether it's a model I created or one by another designer. Whether it's a very simple model, just one sheet, or a complex architectural model with 20 sheets or more.

Well, duty calls, so I leave you with the Red Dog Saloon.

The download, as always, is easy and safe, directly from Google Drive. Happy assembly!

Bem, o dever me chama, então deixo vocês com o Red Dog Saloon.

O download, como sempre, é fácil e seguro, direto do Google Drive. Boa montagem!
