Crafting Your Museums - Four Hong Kong Architectural Paper Models by Hong Kong Museums

I found this very interesting collection of architectural papercrafts on the official Hong Kong museums website. Called “Crafting Your Museums”, the collection was created for Muse Fest HK 2020 and features four very different museums and historic buildings from Hong Kong.

One thing you will immediately notice is that these paper models have no printed textures. This is intentional. The idea is to print the pieces on colored paper and let each modeler choose the colors and final appearance of the buildings.

I think this is actually one of the most interesting things about this collection. Without fixed textures, you can use different colored papers, draw your own details, add homemade textures or simply leave the models clean and minimalist. This also makes their shapes and architectural details much easier to see.

The four models represent very different pieces of Hong Kong's heritage. Flagstaff House was built between 1844 and 1846 and is one of the oldest surviving Western-style buildings in Hong Kong. Today it houses the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware.

The Hong Kong Railway Museum occupies the old Tai Po Market railway station, built in 1913 in a traditional Chinese architectural style. Another very unusual model is the Fireboat Alexander Grantham, built in Hong Kong in 1951 and commissioned in 1953. After many years fighting fires in the harbor, the vessel was preserved and transformed into an exhibition gallery.

Completing the collection is Oi!, an art space housed in historic buildings with Arts and Crafts architectural influences.

The collection also includes small accessories such as people and trees, so you can create little scenes around the buildings. There are options for beginners and more experienced modelers, with instructions available on the website.

Encontrei esta coleção muito interessante de papercrafts arquitetônicos no site oficial dos museus de Hong Kong. Chamada “Crafting Your Museums”, a coleção foi criada para o Muse Fest HK 2020 e apresenta quatro museus e construções históricas bem diferentes de Hong Kong.

Uma coisa que você vai notar imediatamente é que estes modelos de papel não possuem texturas impressas. Isso é proposital. A ideia é imprimir as peças em papéis coloridos e deixar que cada modelista escolha as cores e a aparência final das construções.

Acho que esta é justamente uma das coisas mais interessantes da coleção. Sem texturas definidas, você pode usar papéis de várias cores, desenhar seus próprios detalhes, adicionar texturas caseiras ou simplesmente deixar os modelos com um visual limpo e minimalista. Isso também ajuda a destacar melhor as formas e os detalhes arquitetônicos.

Os quatro modelos representam partes bem diferentes do patrimônio de Hong Kong. A Flagstaff House foi construída entre 1844 e 1846 e é uma das construções em estilo ocidental mais antigas ainda preservadas em Hong Kong. Atualmente abriga o Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware.

O Hong Kong Railway Museum ocupa a antiga estação ferroviária de Tai Po Market, construída em 1913 em estilo arquitetônico tradicional chinês. Outro modelo bastante incomum é o barco-bombeiro Alexander Grantham, construído em Hong Kong em 1951 e colocado em serviço em 1953. Depois de muitos anos combatendo incêndios no porto, a embarcação foi preservada e transformada em espaço de exposição.

Completando a coleção está o Oi!, um espaço dedicado às artes instalado em construções históricas com influência do estilo Arts and Crafts.

A coleção também traz pequenos acessórios, como pessoas e árvores, permitindo criar pequenas cenas ao redor das construções. Há opções para iniciantes e modelistas mais experientes, com instruções disponíveis no próprio site.

Blaubeurer Tor In Ulm - Historical Gate Paper Model In 1/250 Scale by Dieter Welz

Here is another impressive architectural paper model created by German designer and model maker Dieter Welz, from the Wediul-Kartonmodelle website, formerly known to many papercraft enthusiasts as Ausschneide Bogen.

This time the subject is the Blaubeurer Tor, one of the historic structures belonging to the great Federal Fortress of Ulm (Bundesfestung Ulm), in Germany.

The model is in 1/250 scale and is certainly not a small or overly simple project. It is composed of 369 individual parts distributed over ten A4 sheets, and when completed measures approximately 28 cm wide, 23.5 cm deep and 7 cm high.

For a better result, Dieter Welz recommends printing the templates on 160 g/m² paper. The model was also designed to allow internal LED lighting, a very interesting feature for anyone planning to use it in a historical diorama or display.

The real Blaubeurer Tor was part of the enormous Bundesfestung Ulm, a system of fortifications constructed around Ulm and Neu-Ulm during the 19th century, after the Napoleonic Wars.

The gate was built between 1843 and 1855 as part of the western defenses of the city. Besides its military purpose, it had another very interesting function: branches of the Blau River flowed directly beneath the structure, and a system of integrated sluices could be used to control the water and, if necessary, flood the wet defensive moat.

An interesting coincidence makes this paper model even more timely: in 2026, the real Blaubeurer Tor became fully visible again for the first time in around sixty years, following the removal of the large road bridge that had crossed above the historic structure for decades.

A wooden drawbridge originally stood directly beside the gate building, completing the defensive system and giving the place an appearance very different from what can be seen there today.

Dieter Welz reconstructed the paper model using historical information and images available on the internet, so the model represents an approximate interpretation of how the Blaubeurer Tor and its surroundings looked in the past rather than its present-day configuration.

The project even includes small figures and horse-drawn carriages, and the author suggests using model railway scenery materials to make the grass and surrounding terrain more realistic.

As with many of Dieter Welz's architectural models already featured here on Papermau, this is much more than a simple paper building. It is a miniature reconstruction of a real piece of German history and a particularly interesting project for those who enjoy historical architecture, fortifications, model railways, dioramas and wargames.

Eis aqui mais um impressionante modelo arquitetônico em papel criado pelo designer e modelista alemão Dieter Welz, do site Wediul-Kartonmodelle, anteriormente conhecido por muitos amantes do papercraft como Ausschneide Bogen.

Desta vez o tema é o Blaubeurer Tor, uma das construções históricas que faziam parte da gigantesca Fortaleza Federal de Ulm (Bundesfestung Ulm), na Alemanha.

O modelo está na escala 1/250 e certamente não é um projeto pequeno ou simples demais. Ele é composto por 369 peças individuais distribuídas em dez folhas A4 e, depois de montado, mede aproximadamente 28 cm de largura, 23,5 cm de profundidade e 7 cm de altura.

Para um melhor resultado, Dieter Welz recomenda imprimir os templates em papel de 160 g/m². O modelo também foi projetado para permitir iluminação interna com LEDs, um recurso muito interessante para quem pretende utilizá-lo em um diorama histórico ou simplesmente expô-lo.

O verdadeiro Blaubeurer Tor fazia parte da enorme Bundesfestung Ulm, um sistema de fortificações construído ao redor das cidades de Ulm e Neu-Ulm durante o século XIX, após as Guerras Napoleônicas.

O portão foi construído entre 1843 e 1855 como parte das defesas do acesso oeste da cidade. Além de sua função militar, ele possuía outra característica muito interessante: braços do rio Blau passavam diretamente por baixo da construção e um sistema de comportas permitia controlar a água e, em caso de necessidade, inundar o fosso defensivo.

Uma interessante coincidência torna este modelo em papel ainda mais atual: em 2026, o verdadeiro Blaubeurer Tor voltou a ficar totalmente visível pela primeira vez em cerca de sessenta anos, após a remoção da grande ponte rodoviária que durante décadas passava sobre a construção histórica.

Originalmente havia também uma ponte levadiça de madeira junto ao edifício do portão, completando o sistema defensivo e dando ao local uma aparência bastante diferente daquela que podemos ver atualmente.

Dieter Welz reconstruiu o modelo em papel utilizando informações históricas e imagens disponíveis na internet, portanto o papercraft representa uma interpretação aproximada de como o Blaubeurer Tor e seus arredores eram no passado, e não exatamente sua configuração atual.

O projeto inclui até pequenas figuras e carruagens puxadas por cavalos, e o autor sugere o uso de materiais de cenário encontrados em lojas de ferromodelismo para tornar a grama e o terreno ao redor ainda mais realistas.

Assim como acontece com muitos dos modelos arquitetônicos de Dieter Welz que já apareceram aqui no Papermau, este é muito mais do que simplesmente um prédio de papel. É uma reconstrução em miniatura de uma parte real da história alemã e um projeto especialmente interessante para quem gosta de arquitetura histórica, fortificações, ferromodelismo, dioramas e wargames.

Germany's Fort Unterer Kuhberg Fortress Paper Model In 1/250 Scale by Dieter Welz

This impressive paper model of Fort Unterer Kuhberg, in Ulm, Germany, is offered by the talented German designer Dieter Welz, from the Ausschneide Bogen website. The model is in 1/250 scale and was designed to be assembled with internal LED lighting, making it even more interesting for display in historical dioramas, model railways, RPG and thematic wargames.

The real Fort Unterer Kuhberg is part of the historic Bundesfestung Ulm, a huge military fortification built between 1846 and 1858 to defend the Danube region. The original complex was able to house around 1,300 soldiers and had walls, casemates, dry moats, artillery positions and several defensive structures typical of 19th century military architecture.

As is already traditional in Dieter Welz models, the level of detail is really impressive. The textures faithfully reproduce the stone walls, roofs, inner courtyards and defensive structures of the original fort. The model was also designed to receive optional internal lighting, creating a very beautiful visual effect when displayed in low light.

The model consists of 239 parts distributed over 14 printed sheets and, once assembled, measures approximately 36 cm wide, 27 cm deep and 11 cm high. The recommended paper for assembly is 160 gsm paper.

Since this is a model made up of many parts, several of them quite small, I recommend setting aside a small box to store everything during assembly. It can be a shoebox, a shirt box or any container you have at hand. This helps a lot to avoid losing pieces and also prevents the need to print sheets again because of some misplaced detail.

And this becomes especially important because this is not exactly one of those models that can normally be assembled in a single afternoon. Very likely, even experienced modelers will spend a few days completing the entire build calmly and accurately.

If you appreciate historical military architecture, European fortifications or simply enjoy richly detailed architectural models, this Fort Unterer Kuhberg will certainly be a standout addition to any papercraft collection.

Este impressionante modelo de papel do Forte Unterer Kuhberg, em Ulm, na Alemanha, é oferecido pelo talentoso designer alemão Dieter Welz, do site Ausschneide Bogen. O modelo está na escala 1/250 e foi projetado para montagem com iluminação interna em LED, o que o torna ainda mais interessante para exibição em dioramas históricos, ferromodelismo, RPG e wargames temáticos.

O modelo é composto por 239 peças distribuídas em 14 folhas impressas e, depois de montado, mede aproximadamente 36 cm de largura, 27 cm de profundidade e 11 cm de altura. O papel recomendado para a montagem é papel de 160 gramas.

Como este é um modelo composto por muitas partes, sendo várias delas bem pequenas, recomendo separar uma pequena caixa para armazenar tudo durante a montagem. Pode ser uma caixa de sapatos, uma caixa de camisa ou qualquer recipiente que esteja à mão. Isso ajuda bastante a evitar a perda de peças e também impede que seja necessário imprimir folhas novamente por causa de algum detalhe extraviado.

E isso se torna especialmente importante porque este não é exatamente um daqueles modelos que normalmente se monta em uma única tarde. Muito provavelmente, até mesmo modelistas experientes gastarão alguns dias para concluir toda a construção com calma e precisão.

Se você aprecia arquitetura militar histórica, fortificações europeias ou simplesmente gosta de modelos arquitetônicos ricos em detalhes, este Fort Unterer Kuhberg certamente será uma adição de destaque em qualquer coleção de papercrafts.

THV Vectis British Buoy Tender Paper Model In 1/250 Scaleby Paper Shipwright

This is the THV Vectis paper model, in 1/250 scale, offered by Paper Shipwright, British website. 

This is a free papercraft, but to download it you will have to fill out an order as if you were going to buy it and you will not need to provide a credit card number or any type of billing information, but a valid email is mandatory , since it is through this that you will receive the templates.

The THV Vectis was built in 1991 as an inshore buoy tender and workboat for the Corporation of Trinity House, who are responsible for lighthouses and other aids to navigation round the coast of England and Wales. 

She was sold in 2006 following a review of requirements that led to the commissioning of the new rapid intervention vessel, THV Alert, and is now working as an inshore survey vessel.

Helios Lighthouse Paper Model In 1/250 Scale - by Papierdenkmal

Created by the talented German designer and model maker Jens Neuhaus, from Papierdenkmal website and made up of 112 or 122 pieces (depending on the version chosen) organized on four sheets of paper (two for each version), this is the 1/250 scale paper model of the Helios Lighthouse in Cologne, Germany. 

Regarding this model, Mr. Neuhaus said: - "A train journey from Cologne to Aachen brings a surprise just behind the Ehrenfeld railway station: to the left of the tracks, a 44 meter high lighthouse rises into the air on the old factory of Helios AG. 

The former electrical engineering company, founded in 1882, had the marine structure built in the city center for testing and advertising purposes. In addition to the initial implementation of numerous inventions, the innovative product portfolio also included the electrification of lighthouses along the German North Sea coast.

Although the joint stock company was acquired by AEG in 1904 and liquidated in 1905, the lighthouse still exists today and is a landmark in the Ehrenfeld district of Cologne. 

The paper model offers two variants: the current look with a white facade and urban graffiti look, or the original turn-of-the-century version with exposed bricks."

Criado pelo talentoso designer e modelista alemão Jens Neuhaus, do site Papierdenkmal e composto de 112 ou 122 peças (dependendo da versão escolhida) organizadas em quatro folhas de papel (duas para cada versão), este é o modelo de papel na escala 1/250 do Farol de Helios em Colônia, na Alemanha. 

A respeito deste modelo, o Sr. Neuhaus disse: - "Uma viagem de trem de Colônia a Aachen traz uma surpresa logo atrás da estação ferroviária de Ehrenfeld: à esquerda dos trilhos, um farol de 44 metros de altura se ergue no ar na antiga fábrica da Helios AG. 

A antiga empresa de engenharia elétrica, fundada em 1882, mandou construir a estrutura marítima no centro da cidade para fins de testes e publicidade. Além da implementação inicial de inúmeras invenções, o portfólio de produtos inovadores também incluiu a eletrificação de faróis ao longo da costa alemã do Mar do Norte. 

Embora a sociedade por ações tenha sido adquirida pela AEG em 1904 e liquidada em 1905, o farol ainda existe hoje e é um marco no distrito de Ehrenfeld, em Colônia. 

O modelo de papel oferece duas variantes: o aspecto atual com fachada branca e aspecto de grafite urbano, ou a versão original da virada do século d etijolos aparentes."

Ulm-Wiblingen Water Plant Paper Model Diorama In 1/250 Scale by Ausschneide Bogen

The Ulm-Wiblingen water plant shown in the model consists of the plant, two outbuildings and a residential building with garages. 

The Danube plant was built in 1907 as a power plant and pumping station for water supply and was renovated in 1969. 

An approximately 1 km canal supplies the plant, driving the turbines at a drop height of approximately 3.3m and 58m³ per second and producing approximately 1.25 MW of power. 

The Donaueschingen - Passau Danube cycle path crosses the bridge of this hydroelectric power plant through an idyllic landscape along the Danube Canal from the Grone nature reserve on the edge of the Donautal industrial area to Ulm. 

Perfect for Dioramas, RPGs and Wargames, this model is offered by Ausschneide Bogen website and is in 1/250 scale. 

You will need to print 21 sheets of paper to assemble it and when finished this model will measure 35 cm x 37.5 cm x 13 cm.

A usina de água Ulm-Wiblingen mostrada no modelo é composta pela usina, dois anexos e um edifício residencial com garagens. 

A usina do Danúbio foi construída em 1907 como usina e estação de bombeamento para abastecimento de água e foi reformada em 1969. 

Um canal de aproximadamente 1km abastece a usina, acionando as turbinas a uma altura de queda de aproximadamente 3,3m e 58m³ por segundo e produz aproximadamente 1,25 MW de potência. 

A ciclovia do Danúbio Donaueschingen - Passau atravessa a ponte desta usina hidrelétrica através de uma paisagem idílica ao longo do Canal do Danúbio, desde a reserva natural de Grone, nos limites da área industrial de Donautal, até Ulm. 

Perfeito para Dioramas, RPG e Wargames, este modelo é oferecido pelo site Ausschneide Bogen e está na escala 1/250. 

Você precisará imprimir 21 folhas de papel para montá-lo e quando pronto este modelo medirá 35 cms x 37,5 cms x 13 cms.
