This excellent Formula 1 paper car is part of the PaperWheels series and was created by American designer Kellen Waugh, also known in the papercraft world as Kspudw. Kellen is certainly not a newcomer to the hobby, as his cars, stylized vehicles and paper toys have circulated throughout the internet and the papercraft community for many years.
The model presented here is called F1-26, and its file takes up only three printable sheets in PDF format. Despite its detailed appearance and the aerodynamic shapes typical of a modern Formula 1 car, it is made up of only 17 pieces, including the four tires. For this reason, its assembly is much easier than it may appear at first glance.
Even without a manual, a model with so few pieces would already be relatively easy to assemble, but in this case Kellen Waugh went much further. The instructions are provided in a second PDF file containing no fewer than 60 pages, each one featuring a clear illustration showing a small step of the construction, from the initial cutting and scoring to the final joining of the different parts of the car.
Therefore, if your excuse for not building a Formula 1 paper model was that these cars look too complicated, this time there are no more excuses. The instructions are so detailed that they practically guide the modeler piece by piece, fold by fold and glue joint by glue joint.
To obtain a firm and durable model that is still easy to fold, I believe the best choice is to print the three sheets on paper weighing between 160 and 180 g/m². Thinner paper may leave the bodywork a little too fragile, while very heavy cardstock may make it more difficult to form the small curves and folds required to reproduce the aerodynamic lines of the vehicle.
To build the F1-26, you will need only a printer, paper, scissors and white glue. The author also recommends using tweezers to handle the smaller parts and a blunt ruler, an empty ballpoint pen or another suitable scoring tool to prepare the fold lines, ensuring greater precision and a cleaner finish.
The PaperWheels page also features images of cars with liveries inspired by several racing teams, as well as a few special versions. At the moment, however, the only free download available is the F1-26 model featured on the page.
