Hand-Drawn Traditional Japanese Takasebune Cargo Boat Papercraft by Miyoshi Fudoki-no-Oka Museum

This beautiful and unusual papercraft represents a Takasebune, a traditional type of cargo boat that once sailed along Japan’s Gonokawa River. The model is offered for free by the Miyoshi Fudoki-no-Oka Museum, also known as the Hiroshima Prefectural History and Folklore Museum, while the original plans were provided by the Fukuyama Kusado Sengen Museum.

According to the information presented by the museum, these boats were used until approximately one hundred years ago along the section of the Gonokawa River connecting the city of Miyoshi, in Hiroshima Prefecture, with the city of Gotsu, in Shimane Prefecture. Boats leaving Miyoshi transported goods such as rice, charcoal, sake, fabrics and lumber. From Gotsu, they carried salt, dried fish, fertilizer, pottery and sugar.

A particularly interesting detail about this project is that the papercraft was drawn by hand, giving it a pleasant handcrafted appearance that perfectly matches the historical subject of the boat.

The papercraft reproduces the boat’s long hull, internal structures, crossbeams, masts, rudder and a large sail decorated with the museum’s character. The project consists of two A4 sheets containing the parts, together with a separate illustrated instruction sheet. An optional solid brown sheet is also included and can be printed on the back of the first parts sheet, preventing the inside of the finished hull from remaining white.

The official page recommends printing the templates on slightly thicker paper. Paper weighing between 120 and 160 g/m² should work very well, providing enough strength while still allowing the hull parts to be folded and curved without too much difficulty. Although the written instructions are in Japanese, the assembly diagrams are clear and detailed, showing where each part should be attached.

Some care will be necessary when shaping the hull and positioning the internal structures, but the completed model becomes a very original miniature of a historic Japanese riverboat.

Há também uma folha opcional inteiramente marrom, criada para ser impressa no verso da primeira página de peças, evitando que o interior do casco permaneça branco depois da montagem.

A página oficial recomenda a utilização de papel um pouco mais grosso. Para uma boa montagem, papel com gramatura entre 120 e 160 g/m² deve funcionar muito bem, oferecendo firmeza suficiente sem dificultar as dobras e a curvatura do casco. Embora as instruções estejam em japonês, os diagramas de montagem são claros, detalhados e mostram a posição de cada parte.

O modelo exige atenção na montagem do casco e das estruturas internas, mas o resultado final é uma miniatura muito original de uma embarcação histórica japonesa.

Seven Japanese Maritime Training Ships Papercraft Collection by JMETS

Some papercraft collections are interesting not only because of the models they offer, but also because of the small part of the real world they manage to preserve in paper. This is exactly the case with this collection of Japanese maritime training vessels made available for free by the Japan Agency of Maritime Education and Training for Seafarers, better known as JMETS.

JMETS is an institution dedicated to the education of future maritime professionals in Japan, combining classroom learning at its schools with practical activities aboard real vessels. The papercrafts presented on this page reproduce ships used by maritime schools and colleges connected with the institution, offering an interesting glimpse into this lesser-known aspect of Japanese maritime education.

The collection includes seven training vessels: Boyo Maru, Koyo Maru, Harius, Asakaze, Gassan, Kazahaya and Kurushima. Although they all belong to the same world of maritime training, the ships have noticeably different silhouettes and details, including their hulls, wheelhouses, decks, masts and navigation equipment.

The website does not recommend a specific paper weight, but I believe that paper between 120 and 160 gsm should work very well. Slightly lighter paper will make it easier to shape the curved hulls, while 160 gsm paper will provide greater strength for the wheelhouses, decks and other structural parts. Scissors, a craft knife, a ruler for scoring and white glue should be practically everything needed to build the models.

This is a very interesting collection for modelers who enjoy ships, working vessels, maritime subjects and Japanese paper models that are rarely seen outside their country of origin. When displayed together, the seven completed papercrafts can also form a beautiful little fleet dedicated to maritime education and training.

Today I'd like to share something a little different from our usual papercraft posts, but something that I believe is important for everyone who enjoys scale modeling, regardless of the medium.

Recently, Model Ship World, one of the world's most respected ship modeling forums, suffered a devastating cyberattack that resulted in the loss of nearly twenty years of accumulated content. Thousands of build logs, photographs, historical references, tutorials and discussions disappeared, representing one of the greatest losses the modeling community has ever experienced.

The good news is that Model Ship World is already back online. The forum has been rebuilt and the community has immediately begun the long process of moving forward. While the original archive cannot be recovered, the people who made the forum such a special place are still there, ready to build its future together.

This is where former members can make a real difference.

If you were once part of Model Ship World and still have copies of your own build logs, project photographs, PDF tutorials, downloaded files or archived discussions saved on your computer or external drives, the MSW team would love to hear from you. Any material you can share may help recover valuable pieces of the forum's history and preserve knowledge that would otherwise be lost forever.

Even if you don't have any files to contribute, you can still help by sharing this information. There may be former members who have no idea that old folders sitting on a hard drive could now become an important part of rebuilding the forum's historic collection.

WWII Rhine Ferry Siebelfähre SF 311 Detailed Papercraft In 1:72 Scaleby Kallboys

This papercraft model represents the Siebelfähre SF 311, a Rhine River ferry used in the period following World War II, when many bridges had been destroyed and alternative means of transportation became essential.

Created by the German group Kallboys, this is model number 97 from the Mondorfer Bastelbögen series, well known for recreating historical subjects with a strong sense of realism, detail and context.

The Siebelfähre ferries were originally developed during the war and later adapted for civilian use, helping reconnect cities such as Bonn and Beuel by transporting vehicles, goods and passengers across the Rhine.

This model is presented in 1:72 scale and its numbers are truly impressive, with 1309 parts distributed across 83 pages, including 51 pages of detailed instructions and 32 printable sheets with the parts themselves. It goes far beyond the ferry alone, also including vehicles, figures and a display base, forming a complete historical scene.

Because of the high level of complexity and the large number of parts, many of them very small, this is clearly not a project for just any modeler, but rather for those who are organized, extremely patient and highly meticulous, also requiring good eyesight to deal with the finest details.

As with other releases in this series, the model can be assembled using basic tools such as scissors and a craft knife, and it also includes files suitable for laser cutting for those who prefer that option.

This is a challenging project especially recommended for experienced modelers and for anyone who appreciates historical subjects, realistic dioramas and richly detailed papercraft models.

Este modelo em papercraft representa a Siebelfähre SF 311, uma balsa utilizada no rio Reno no período logo após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, quando muitas pontes haviam sido destruídas e soluções alternativas de transporte se tornaram essenciais.

Criado pelo grupo alemão Kallboys, este é o modelo número 97 da série Mondorfer Bastelbögen, conhecida por recriar temas históricos com grande senso de realismo, riqueza de detalhes e contexto.

As balsas do tipo Siebelfähre foram originalmente desenvolvidas durante a guerra e depois adaptadas para uso civil, ajudando a reconectar cidades como Bonn e Beuel ao transportar veículos, mercadorias e passageiros através do rio.

O modelo está na escala 1:72 e impressiona pelos números, são 1309 peças distribuídas em um total de 83 páginas, sendo 51 páginas de instruções detalhadas e 32 folhas com as peças para impressão. E ele vai muito além da embarcação em si, incluindo também veículos, figuras e uma base de exibição, formando uma cena histórica completa.

Pelo nível de complexidade e pela quantidade de peças, muitas delas bastante pequenas, este definitivamente não é um projeto para qualquer modelista, mas sim para pessoas organizadas, muito pacientes e extremamente meticulosas, além de exigir também boa acuidade visual para lidar com os detalhes mais delicados.

Assim como outros modelos desta série, a montagem pode ser feita com ferramentas simples, como tesoura e estilete, e também há arquivos compatíveis com corte a laser para quem preferir esse método.

Trata-se de um projeto desafiador, especialmente indicado para modelistas mais experientes e para quem aprecia temas históricos, dioramas realistas e modelos em papel com alto nível de detalhamento.
