Last night I assembled the model and the pieces fit together perfectly.
I wanted to know if the "following eye" effect would be noticeable in the physical model and, yes, there is the feeling that the book is "watching" you as you turn it from one side to the other.
That was the feeling I wanted, of "Big Brother" looking over all the citizens.
The entire model takes up just two printed sheets and, once assembled, is 13.5 cm high, 9 cm long and 2 cm wide, more or less the size of a standard paperback book.
I glued a piece of transparent plastic inside the eye opening for a better finish and to prevent dust.
Who could have imagined that a book written in 1949 talking about a dystopian future in 1984 would become so possible in 2024?
"Ministries of Truth" spread throughout the world, as does "Newspeak."
Even if the grass is green and the sky is blue, it is already a crime to say that the grass is green and the sky is blue in some countries - someone whispered Brazil, Canada?
And please don't tell me "well, the grass isn't always green or the sky is always blue", you know what I meant.
This papercraft is a tribute (contains irony) to all the "Ministries of Truth" around the world.
"1984" is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell and published in 1949. Set in a totalitarian future, the book portrays a world where the government, led by the party known as "Big Brother", controls every aspect of citizens' lives, including your thoughts and memories.
The protagonist, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth, where he reviews and alters historical documents to suit the party's interests.
He begins to question the reality imposed by the government and becomes involved in a forbidden relationship with Julia, a co-worker.
They are discovered, captured and subjected to brutal re-education. Winston is subjected to intense brainwashing and psychological torture by the Party.
Winston is led to full acceptance of Big Brother's rule, completely renouncing his own individuality and submitting to the party's authority.
He ends up betraying Julia, whom he loved, and blindly accepts the party's ideologies.
The novel ends with Winston sitting in a cafe, completely transformed and without any desire for rebellion or critical thinking, completely subjugated by the tyranny of the state.
It is a dark and harrowing ending that highlights the complete victory of totalitarianism over individual freedom and independent thought.
When I read this book for the first time I was around fifteen years old and I read everything I could. There was still no internet, no Kindle, no virtual libraries, so any book that fell into my hands was eagerly consumed.
At that time I just wanted knowledge and I didn't care if it was of good or bad quality, I just wanted to read and read and read.
Although at the time I thought the book was good fiction, for me it was just that, a good story that would never go beyond that.
I remember a passage from the book that I remembered as "2+2=5", when Winston is forced to accept this idea during his re-education by the party.
The statement that "2+2=5" is a symbol of the totalitarian government's ability to control people's perception of reality and make them believe clearly false things.
It is a way of demonstrating the party's absolute power over the minds and consciences of citizens, forcing them to accept any statement, no matter how absurd, if it suits the party's interests.
The exact text is this, in which Winston says:
- "How can I avoid seeing what is in front of my eyes? Two and two make four.
- Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes there are five. Sometimes there are three. Sometimes they are all at the same time. You must try harder. It is not easy to become sane."

Noite passada eu montei o modelo e as peças se encaixaram perfeitamente. Eu queria saber se o efeito de "olho que segue" iria ser perceptível no modelo físico e, sim, há a sensação que o livro te "vigia" conforme você o vira para um lado e outro.
Era essa sensação que eu queria, do olhar do "Grande Irmão" sobre todos os cidadãos.
O modelo todo ocupa apenas duas folhas impressas e depois de montado fica com 13,5 cms de altura, 9 de comprimento e dois de largura, mais ou menos o tamanho de um livro de bolso padrão.
Eu colei um pedaço de plástico transparente por dentro da abertura do olho para um melhor acabamento e para não empoeirar.
Quem poderia imaginar que um livro escrito em 1949 falando de um futuro distópico em 1984, se tornaria tão possível em 2024?
Os "Ministérios da Verdade" se espalham por todo o mundo, assim como a "Novilíngua".
Mesmo que a grama seja verde e o céu seja azul, já é crime dizer que a grama é verde e o céu é azul em alguns países - alguém sussurrou Brasil e Canadá?
E por favor não venha me dizer "ora, nem sempre a grama é verde ou o céu é sempre azul", você sabe o que eu quis dizer.

Quando eu li esse livro pela primeira vez eu tinha por volta de quinze anos e lia tudo que eu podia.
Ainda não havia internet, nem kindle, nem bibliotecas virtuais, então qualquer livro que caia em minhas mãos era avidamente consumido.
Nessa época eu só queria conhecimento e não me importava se era de boa ou má qualidade, eu só queria ler e ler e ler.
Apesar de na época achar o livro uma boa ficção, para mim era só isso mesmo, uma boa história que nunca passaria disso.
Lembro de uma passagem do livro que guardei na memória como "2+2=5", quando Winston é forçado a aceitar essa ideia durante sua reeducação pelo partido.
A afirmação de que "2+2=5" é um símbolo da capacidade do governo totalitário de controlar a percepção da realidade das pessoas e fazer com que elas acreditem em coisas claramente falsas.
É uma maneira de demonstrar o poder absoluto do partido sobre a mente e a consciência dos cidadãos, forçando-os a aceitar qualquer afirmação, por mais absurda que seja, se isso for conveniente para os interesses do partido.
