The Ephemeral Museum - The Steampunk Mansion Papercraft Assembled by Greg

One of the most interesting things about papercrafting is realizing that a model does not necessarily end when its creator finishes the templates. Once the file is published and begins traveling around the internet, each modeler can interpret it in their own way, adding techniques, details and solutions that were never part of the original project.

And I think the Steampunk Mansion featured in this post is a perfect example of that.

This incredible build was made by Greg, a modeler from Ireland who kindly contacted me and sent these photos of his version of the Steampunk Mansion, a model I recently published here at Papermau.

Greg did much more than simply print, cut and assemble the model. He printed most of the pages three times and used the extra copies to create recessed doors and windows, as well as several layers of relief on the walls and external details of the building.

The result can be clearly seen in the photos. Frames, windows, doors, panels and many small elements of the façade gained real depth and now cast tiny shadows over the walls. The technique added a very interesting three-dimensional appearance to the building and, from some angles, I almost have the impression that I am looking at a completely different version of the Steampunk Mansion.

When I created this model, I tried to include many small elements in the textures precisely to suggest volumes, mechanisms, signs, pipes and overlapping parts typical of the steampunk aesthetic. Seeing someone transform some of these printed details into actual physical relief is one of those surprises that makes sharing models freely on the internet so rewarding.

The file is the same, the pieces are the same, but in the hands of another modeler the final result can acquire a completely different personality.

Greg was quite modest when I asked if he would like to write a few words to accompany the photos. He simply said that he likes putting models together. Perhaps that is also a good definition of the spirit of this hobby: printing a few sheets of paper, sitting at a table with scissors, a hobby knife and glue and, over the course of a few hours, transforming something two-dimensional into a small object that simply did not exist before.

This is exactly the kind of work I like to preserve here at The Ephemeral Museum. Paper is a simple and inevitably ephemeral material, but every build is unique because it carries something of the choices, patience and creativity of the person who made it.

My sincere thanks to Greg for building the Steampunk Mansion, for allowing me to share these photos here at Papermau and, above all, for showing such an interesting way of taking this model several steps beyond the original project.

Uma das coisas mais interessantes no papelmodelismo é perceber que um modelo não necessariamente termina quando seu criador conclui os templates. Depois que o arquivo é publicado e começa a viajar pela internet, cada modelista pode interpretá-lo à sua maneira, acrescentando técnicas, detalhes e soluções que não estavam previstas no projeto original.

E acho que a Steampunk Mansion apresentada neste post é um ótimo exemplo disso.

Esta incrível montagem foi feita por Greg, um modelista da Irlanda que gentilmente entrou em contato comigo e enviou estas fotos de sua versão da Steampunk Mansion, um modelo que publiquei recentemente aqui no Papermau.

Greg não se limitou simplesmente a imprimir, recortar e montar o modelo. Ele imprimiu a maior parte das páginas três vezes e utilizou as cópias extras para criar portas e janelas recuadas e também várias camadas de relevo nas paredes e nos detalhes externos da construção.

O resultado pode ser visto claramente nas fotos. Molduras, janelas, portas, painéis e vários pequenos elementos da fachada ganharam profundidade real e passaram a projetar pequenas sombras sobre as paredes. A técnica acrescentou um aspecto tridimensional muito interessante à construção e, em alguns ângulos, a impressão que tenho é de estar olhando para uma versão completamente diferente da Steampunk Mansion.

Quando criei este modelo, procurei colocar muitos pequenos elementos na textura justamente para sugerir volumes, mecanismos, placas, tubulações e partes sobrepostas típicas daquela estética steampunk. Ver alguém transformar alguns desses detalhes impressos em relevos físicos é uma daquelas surpresas que tornam tão interessante compartilhar modelos gratuitamente pela internet.

O arquivo é o mesmo, as peças são as mesmas, mas nas mãos de outro modelista o resultado pode ganhar uma personalidade completamente diferente.

Greg foi bastante modesto quando perguntei se gostaria de escrever algumas palavras para acompanhar as fotos. Disse simplesmente que gosta de montar modelos. Talvez essa seja também uma boa definição para o espírito deste hobby: imprimir algumas folhas de papel, sentar diante de uma mesa com tesoura, estilete e cola e, durante algumas horas, transformar algo bidimensional em um pequeno objeto que antes simplesmente não existia.

É justamente esse tipo de trabalho que gosto de guardar aqui no The Ephemeral Museum. O papel é um material simples e inevitavelmente efêmero, mas cada montagem é única, porque carrega um pouco das escolhas, da paciência e da criatividade de quem a construiu.

European Bookshop Building Papercraft for Dioramas and Model Railways - by Edificios de Papel

Mónica and Aníbal, from the Spanish website Edificios de Papel, have released another beautiful architectural papercraft, this time representing a tall European-style building with a small shop on the ground floor.

It is the kind of model that can be used in many different ways. It can become part of a French village, an old European street, a model railway layout or even a background building for RPG and wargame tables. By printing and assembling several copies, you can easily create a complete row of houses and shops.

On the sign above the storefront it reads Librairie du Vieux Moulin – Livres Anciens et d’Occasion, which in English means The Old Mill Bookshop – Antique and Second-Hand Books, a small detail that helps give the building the atmosphere of an old French town.

As usual with the models offered by Edificios de Papel, the download includes several sizes. The building is available in Z scale at 1/220, N scale at 1/160, H0 scale at 1/87, as well as 1/100 and 1/72 scales. This makes it much easier to adapt the model to different collections and projects.

The parts are arranged on printable sheets and the construction follows the simple style normally found in architectural papercrafts. I believe paper between 160 and 200 g/m² will provide a good balance between firmness and ease of folding.

It is great to see Edificios de Papel active again and offering new free models. Mónica and Aníbal have already shared many useful buildings over the years, and this new project is another welcome addition for anyone who enjoys miniature architecture and paper dioramas.

Mónica e Aníbal, do site espanhol Edificios de Papel, disponibilizaram mais um belo papercraft arquitetônico, desta vez representando um edifício alto de estilo europeu com um pequeno comércio no térreo.

É o tipo de modelo que pode ser usado de muitas maneiras diferentes. Ele pode fazer parte de uma vila francesa, de uma antiga rua europeia, de uma maquete ferroviária ou até mesmo servir como construção de fundo para mesas de RPG e wargame. Imprimindo e montando várias cópias, também é possível criar facilmente uma fileira completa de casas e pequenos estabelecimentos.

No letreiro da fachada está escrito Librairie du Vieux Moulin – Livres Anciens et d’Occasion, que em português significa Livraria do Velho Moinho – Livros Antigos e de Segunda Mão, um pequeno detalhe que ajuda a dar ao edifício a atmosfera de uma antiga cidade francesa.

Como costuma acontecer com os modelos oferecidos pelo Edificios de Papel, o download inclui vários tamanhos. O edifício está disponível na escala Z em 1/220, na escala N em 1/160, na escala H0 em 1/87 e também nas escalas 1/100 e 1/72. Isso facilita bastante a adaptação do modelo a diferentes coleções e projetos.

As peças estão organizadas em folhas prontas para impressão e a montagem segue o estilo simples normalmente encontrado em papercrafts arquitetônicos. Creio que papel com gramatura entre 160 e 200 g/m² oferecerá um bom equilíbrio entre firmeza e facilidade para fazer as dobras.

É muito bom ver o Edificios de Papel novamente ativo e oferecendo novos modelos gratuitos. Mónica e Aníbal já compartilharam muitas construções interessantes ao longo dos anos, e este novo projeto é mais uma ótima adição para quem gosta de arquitetura em miniatura e dioramas de papel.

The Steampunk Mansion Papercraft - by Papermau - Download Now!

After three posts documenting the development of this project, the time has finally come to release the Steampunk Mansion for download. What started as a small house gradually grew into something much larger, gaining towers, chimneys, exposed pipes and many other details along the way. After assembling the first test build, I was very pleased to see that the finished model turned out exactly as I had imagined it in SketchUp.

The PDF file consists of thirteen pages. The first two introduce the finished model and include a short fictional story about this strange building. The next four pages show the mansion from every angle: front, rear, left side and right side. These images serve as a visual reference during assembly and are especially helpful since this model does not include step-by-step illustrated instructions. Fortunately, it is a very straightforward model to build, and all the parts are arranged in a logical way.

The mansion itself, including all of its walls, roofs, towers and chimneys, is spread across just five pages. An additional page contains the optional base. To suit different kinds of dioramas, I created two versions of this base: one completely covered with weathered metal plates, and another using the same metal surface surrounded by grass, allowing each builder to choose the version that best fits their collection or display.

To make assembly even easier, nearly every part is numbered. The system is very simple: each part is glued to the matching part with the same number. In other words, part 01 is glued to the other part marked 01, part 02 to the other part marked 02, and so on. After assembling a few pieces, the logic becomes very intuitive and the rest of the model practically builds itself.

You will also notice that there are no markings on the roofs indicating where the towers and chimneys should be attached. This was done intentionally. I thought it would be much more interesting to leave that decision up to each builder. Feel free to experiment with different positions for these elements and create your own unique version of the mansion. After all, no two steampunk buildings should ever look exactly alike.

Another interesting detail is that I never designed this model with a specific scale in mind. It was only after assembling the prototype that I realized it ended up being very close to 1/64 scale. This makes it a great companion for die-cast vehicles of that size, as well as an excellent addition to dioramas, tabletop RPGs and wargaming layouts. The old pickup truck shown in the photos was included simply to give you an idea of the model's proportions.

As for the mansion's fictional story, I like to imagine that it once belonged to an eccentric inventor. Every time he built a new machine, he added another chimney, another pipe and another tower to the building. Eventually, nobody remembered what all those strange machines were actually built for, but they never stopped running. Maybe that is why the mansion has so many chimneys. Perhaps even all of them together are barely enough to release the steam produced inside. Or perhaps it is all just the imagination of whoever happens to look at it.

Depois de três posts mostrando o desenvolvimento deste projeto, finalmente chegou a hora de disponibilizar a Mansão Steampunk para download. O que começou como uma pequena casa acabou crescendo aos poucos, ganhando torres, chaminés, tubulações aparentes e vários outros detalhes. Depois de montar o primeiro modelo de teste, fiquei muito satisfeito ao ver que o resultado ficou exatamente como eu havia imaginado no SketchUp.

O arquivo em PDF é composto por treze folhas. As duas primeiras apresentam o modelo pronto e trazem uma pequena história fictícia sobre essa estranha construção. As quatro páginas seguintes mostram a mansão vista de todos os lados: frente, traseira, lado esquerdo e lado direito. Essas imagens servem como referência durante a montagem e ajudam bastante, já que este modelo não possui instruções ilustradas passo a passo. Felizmente, ele é bem simples de montar e todas as peças estão organizadas de forma bastante lógica.

A própria mansão, com todas as suas paredes, telhados, torres e chaminés, ocupa apenas cinco folhas. Há ainda mais uma folha destinada à base, que é totalmente opcional. Pensando em diferentes tipos de diorama, resolvi criar duas versões dessa base: uma completamente revestida por chapas metálicas enferrujadas e outra usando as mesmas chapas, mas com um gramado ao redor, permitindo que cada modelista escolha a que melhor combina com sua coleção ou cenário.

Para facilitar ainda mais a montagem, praticamente todas as peças estão numeradas. O sistema é muito simples: uma peça deve ser colada na outra que possui exatamente o mesmo número. Em outras palavras, a peça 01 é colada na outra peça marcada como 01, a peça 02 na outra peça 02 e assim por diante. Depois de montar algumas peças, a lógica fica bastante intuitiva e o restante da construção praticamente segue sozinho.

Você também vai perceber que não existe nenhuma marcação nos telhados indicando onde devem ser instaladas as torres e as chaminés. Fiz isso de propósito. Achei muito mais interessante deixar essa decisão para cada modelista. Assim, basta experimentar diferentes posições para esses elementos e criar uma versão exclusiva da mansão. Afinal, nenhuma construção steampunk deveria ser exatamente igual à outra.

Outra curiosidade é que eu nunca pensei em uma escala específica enquanto desenhava este modelo. Só depois de montar o protótipo percebi que ele ficou muito próximo da escala 1/64. Isso faz com que combine muito bem com carrinhos dessa escala, além de ser uma boa opção para dioramas, RPGs de mesa e cenários para jogos de estratégia. A velha caminhonete que aparece nas fotos foi colocada justamente para dar uma ideia das proporções da construção.

Quanto à pequena história da mansão, gosto de imaginar que ela pertenceu a algum inventor excêntrico. Cada vez que ele criava uma nova máquina, acrescentava mais uma chaminé, mais alguns canos e mais uma torre ao prédio. No fim, ninguém sabia mais exatamente para que servia tudo aquilo, mas as máquinas nunca paravam de funcionar. Talvez seja por isso que a mansão tenha tantas chaminés. Talvez nem todas elas sejam suficientes para liberar o vapor produzido lá dentro. Ou talvez tudo isso seja apenas fruto da imaginação de quem olha para ela.

German Half-Timbered Buildings Papercraft Collection In 1/100 Scale by Boris Voigt

My German friend Boris Voigt has appeared many times here at Papermau with his excellent paper models. Since it had been quite some time since I last visited his impressive collection, I thought this would be a great opportunity to present some of his finest half-timbered architectural models.

Boris has maintained the Projekt Bastelbogen website since 2006 and, over the years, has created and freely published hundreds of paper models. His collection is extremely varied and includes buildings, vehicles, trains, ships, animals, toys, decorative objects and many models designed especially for dioramas and model railways.

The models presented in this post belong to the Fachwerk collection and reproduce the traditional German architectural style with exposed timber frames. All of them are in 1/100 scale and can be combined to create a small village, an old commercial district or a rural historical setting.

On the first page you will find an old workshop and a small dye house, both formed by several connected buildings, annexes, courtyards and roofs of different heights. Additional sets are also available, offering new windows, dormers, chimneys and other parts that can be used to modify and personalize the buildings.

On the second page there are two half-timbered warehouses and two traditional Waldgaststätten, rural establishments similar to inns or restaurants located near forests and country roads. The models have different difficulty levels, ranging from S2 to S5, offering suitable choices for both beginners and more experienced paper modelers.

The author recommends ordinary 80 g/m² paper for many of the models and 120 g/m² paper for some of the buildings. Personally, I believe 120 g/m² paper is an excellent choice for the entire collection, as it provides enough strength without making the small folds of the roofs, windows and other details too difficult. The bases can also be glued onto thin cardboard to keep the buildings stronger and perfectly flat.

At 1/100 scale, these buildings are ideal for historical dioramas, European village scenes, architectural displays, model railways, RPGs and wargames. They can be assembled separately, but they become even more impressive when grouped together in a single setting.

Although these models were created several years ago, they remain as detailed and interesting as many projects released today. This shows why Projekt Bastelbogen continues to be one of the most varied and generous websites dedicated to the papercraft hobby.

Como fazia algum tempo que eu não visitava sua impressionante coleção, achei que esta seria uma ótima oportunidade para apresentar alguns de seus mais belos modelos arquitetônicos em estilo enxaimel.

Boris mantém o site Projekt Bastelbogen desde 2006 e, ao longo dos anos, criou e publicou gratuitamente centenas de modelos de papel. Sua coleção é extremamente variada e inclui edifícios, veículos, trens, navios, animais, brinquedos, objetos decorativos e muitos modelos desenvolvidos especialmente para dioramas e maquetes ferroviárias.

Os modelos apresentados neste post fazem parte da coleção Fachwerk e reproduzem o tradicional estilo arquitetônico alemão com estruturas de madeira aparentes. Todos estão na escala 1/100 e podem ser combinados para formar uma pequena vila, um antigo bairro comercial ou um conjunto rural de aparência histórica.

Na primeira página você encontrará uma antiga oficina e uma pequena tinturaria, ambas formadas por vários edifícios, anexos, pátios e telhados de diferentes alturas. Também estão disponíveis conjuntos adicionais com novas janelas, águas-furtadas, chaminés e outras peças que permitem modificar e personalizar as construções.

Na segunda página estão dois armazéns em estilo enxaimel e duas tradicionais Waldgaststätten, estabelecimentos rurais semelhantes a hospedarias ou restaurantes localizados próximos a florestas e pequenas estradas. Os modelos apresentam diferentes níveis de dificuldade, variando de S2 a S5, oferecendo opções tanto para iniciantes quanto para modelistas mais experientes.

O autor indica papel comum de 80 g/m² para boa parte dos modelos e recomenda 120 g/m² para algumas construções. Pessoalmente, acredito que o papel de 120 g/m² seja uma ótima escolha para toda a coleção, pois oferece firmeza suficiente sem dificultar as pequenas dobras dos telhados, janelas e demais detalhes. As bases também podem ser coladas sobre papelão fino para deixar os edifícios mais resistentes e perfeitamente planos.

Na escala 1/100, estas construções são ideais para dioramas históricos, cenários europeus, maquetes arquitetônicas, ferromodelismo, RPGs e wargames. Elas podem ser montadas separadamente, mas ficam ainda mais impressionantes quando reunidas em um único cenário.

Embora esses modelos tenham sido criados há alguns anos, continuam tão detalhados e interessantes quanto muitos projetos atuais. Isso mostra por que o Projekt Bastelbogen permanece como um dos sites mais variados e generosos dedicados ao hobby do papercraft. Todos os modelos podem ser baixados gratuitamente nos links abaixo.

Héroes y Soldados - Corsairs and Pirates Vintage Paper Figures by Editora Boga - Preserved by Horzzza

Today I bring a small treasure from the world of vintage Spanish paper toys: the Corsarios y Piratas sheet, part of the Héroes y Soldados collection, published in 1973 by Ediciones Boga, S.A., from Bilbao, and printed by Indauchu Editorial.

The Héroes y Soldados collection consisted of eight sheets dedicated to different warriors, soldiers and historical characters, with Corsarios y Piratas being the first one. Each sheet featured several colorful figures to cut out, fold and use as small paper soldiers, preserving the characteristic graphic style of children’s publications from the 1960s and 1970s.

Ediciones Boga was a Spanish publishing company mainly dedicated to children and young readers. In addition to soldiers and cut-out characters, its catalogue included illustrated stories, coloring books, punch-out figures and different kinds of paper toys. Although I could not find precise information about when the company ceased its activities, many of its publications can still be found in archives, collectors’ websites and pages dedicated to vintage paper toys.

All eight sheets from the Héroes y Soldados collection were preserved and shared by Horzzza in his DeviantArt gallery. Many other paper soldiers, playsets, buildings, vehicles and vintage materials from different periods and countries can also be found there. It is a huge gallery that deserves to be explored carefully by anyone interested in papercraft and in the preservation of old paper toys. At the end of this post, in addition to the link to the version I prepared, I will also leave the link to Horzzza’s page where he shares these templates.

Horzzza has appeared several times here on Papermau, both with his own creations and with vintage models preserved and shared by him. Thanks to the work of collectors and modelers like Horzzza, many materials that might otherwise disappear with the passing of time remain available to new generations of enthusiasts.

For this post, I gathered all the material into a single PDF file. The first page features a scene created especially as a cover, showing the paper characters gathered at an old harbor. The second page contains the original front sheet of Corsarios y Piratas, exactly as it was preserved and shared by Horzzza.

The third page presents a new sheet featuring the backs of the characters. These rear views were created by ChatGPT from the original sheet, after several prompts, attempts and adjustments, until we reached a version considered acceptable and sufficiently compatible with the original front illustrations.

As far as possible, the positions, poses, clothing, weapons, accessories and objects carried by each character were preserved. Even so, this rear sheet was not part of the original Ediciones Boga publication and should be considered a modern adaptation created exclusively to complement this papercraft.

Since artificial intelligence cannot always reproduce every small detail of an old illustration perfectly, there may be slight differences between the front and back of some figures. Despite this, I believe the result works very well once assembled, transforming the vintage characters into double-sided miniatures suitable for dioramas, board games, RPGs and wargames.

I placed all three pages inside a single PDF specifically to prevent scaling differences between the front and rear sheets during printing. Simply print both character pages using exactly the same settings, without resizing either page individually.

Since each miniature will be formed by two glued layers, I recommend printing the sheets on paper weighing between 100 and 120 gsm. After joining the front and back, carefully cut around each figure and fold the bases along the indicated lines.

Hoje trago uma pequena joia dos antigos brinquedos de papel espanhóis: a folha Corsarios y Piratas, pertencente à coleção Héroes y Soldados, publicada em 1973 pela Ediciones Boga, S.A., de Bilbao, e impressa pela Indauchu Editorial.

A coleção Héroes y Soldados era formada por oito folhas dedicadas a diferentes guerreiros, soldados e personagens históricos, sendo Corsarios y Piratas a primeira delas. Cada lâmina apresentava diversas figuras coloridas para recortar, dobrar e usar como pequenos soldados de papel, preservando aquele estilo gráfico característico das publicações infantis das décadas de 1960 e 1970.

A Ediciones Boga foi uma editora espanhola voltada principalmente ao público infantil e juvenil. Além de soldados e personagens recortáveis, seu catálogo incluía histórias ilustradas, cadernos para colorir, figuras destacáveis e diferentes tipos de brinquedos de papel. Embora eu não tenha encontrado informações precisas sobre quando a editora encerrou suas atividades, muitos de seus trabalhos ainda podem ser encontrados em arquivos, sites de colecionadores e páginas dedicadas aos antigos recortáveis.

As oito folhas da coleção Héroes y Soldados foram preservadas e disponibilizadas por Horzzza em sua galeria no DeviantArt. No mesmo local também podem ser encontrados muitos outros soldados de papel, playsets, construções, veículos e materiais antigos de diferentes épocas e países. É uma galeria enorme, que merece ser visitada com calma por qualquer pessoa interessada em papercraft e na preservação de antigos brinquedos de papel. No final deste post, além do link para a versão que fiz, também deixarei o link para a página de Horzzza onde ele compartilha esses templates.

Horzzza já apareceu várias vezes aqui no Papermau, tanto com suas próprias criações quanto com modelos antigos preservados e compartilhados por ele. Graças ao trabalho de colecionadores e modelistas como Horzzza, muitos materiais que provavelmente desapareceriam com o passar do tempo continuam disponíveis para novas gerações de entusiastas.

Para esta postagem, reuni todo o material em um único arquivo PDF. A primeira página apresenta uma cena criada especialmente como capa, mostrando os personagens de papel reunidos em um antigo cais. A segunda página contém a folha frontal original de Corsarios y Piratas, exatamente como foi preservada e compartilhada por Horzzza.

A terceira página apresenta uma nova folha com a parte traseira dos personagens. Essa versão traseira foi criada pelo ChatGPT a partir da folha original, depois de vários prompts, tentativas e ajustes, até chegarmos a uma versão considerada aceitável e suficientemente compatível com as figuras frontais.

Foram mantidas, tanto quanto possível, as posições, poses, roupas, armas, acessórios e objetos carregados por cada personagem. Ainda assim, esta folha traseira não fazia parte da publicação original da Ediciones Boga e deve ser considerada uma adaptação moderna criada exclusivamente para complementar este papercraft.

Como a inteligência artificial nem sempre consegue reproduzir perfeitamente todos os detalhes de uma ilustração antiga, podem existir pequenas diferenças entre a frente e o verso de algumas figuras. Apesar disso, acredito que o resultado funciona muito bem depois da montagem e permite transformar os antigos personagens em miniaturas com imagens nos dois lados, adequadas para dioramas, jogos de tabuleiro, RPGs e wargames.

Coloquei as três páginas em um único PDF justamente para evitar diferenças de escala entre a folha frontal e a folha traseira durante a impressão. Basta imprimir as duas páginas dos personagens usando exatamente as mesmas configurações, sem alterar individualmente o tamanho de nenhuma delas.

Como cada miniatura será formada por duas camadas coladas, recomendo imprimir as folhas em papel com gramatura entre 100 e 120 g/m². Depois de unir frente e verso, recorte cuidadosamente o contorno de cada figura e dobre as bases pelas linhas indicadas.
