A Scandinavian Windmill Recreated In Papercraft - by Gunnar Svendén

This papercraft available on the Bildrum website represents the historic windmill known as the Pilot Hill Mill, located on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, more precisely near the harbour of Slite in Sweden. 

The model is based on a real Dutch-type windmill with a rotating cap, built in the early 19th century, which still preserves much of its original structure and machinery, even though it has been out of use for more than a hundred years.

The hill was used as a lookout point for maritime pilots guiding ships to the important harbour of Slite, and before these pilots had a dedicated watch house, the mill itself provided shelter during bad weather. 

Due to its elevated position and clear visibility from the sea, the mill also worked as an effective navigation landmark, almost like an improvised beacon. 

The paper model is designed in 1/100 scale, a common choice for architectural papercrafts and well suited for use in dioramas or historical scenes. 

The entire model fits on a single printed sheet, making it a compact, economical and relatively quick build, while still offering a faithful visual representation of the original structure, including the cylindrical body, the characteristic roof and the four sails of the mill. 

The model was created by Gunnar Svendén, the designer and maintainer of the Bildrum website, a personal project dedicated to freely sharing his papercraft designs.

O modelo é inspirado em um moinho real do tipo holandês, com topo giratório, construído no início do século XIX e que ainda hoje conserva grande parte de sua estrutura e maquinaria original, mesmo estando fora de uso há mais de cem anos. 

O moinho está situado no topo de uma colina chamada Lotsbacken, ou Pilot Hill, um local estratégico que ao longo de séculos teve múltiplas funções além da moagem de grãos. 

A colina era usada como ponto de observação para os pilotos marítimos que auxiliavam a navegação até o importante porto de Slite, e antes da construção de uma casa própria para esses profissionais, o próprio moinho servia como abrigo em dias de mau tempo. 

Pela sua posição elevada e visibilidade a partir do mar, o moinho também funcionava como um eficiente marco de navegação, quase como um farol improvisado. 

O modelo em papel segue a escala 1/100, bastante comum em papercrafts arquitetônicos e ideal para integrar o moinho em dioramas ou cenários históricos. 

Todo o papercraft ocupa apenas uma folha impressa, o que o torna um projeto compacto, econômico e relativamente rápido de montar, sem abrir mão de uma boa representação visual da construção original, incluindo o corpo cilíndrico, o telhado característico e as quatro pás do moinho.

Tordmulen - A Realistic Swedish Tugboat Papercraft In 1/100 Scaleby Gunnar Sillén

Straight from Sweden comes a beautiful and deeply meaningful paper model in 1/100 scale: the Tordmulen tugboat. Available for free on the Bildrum website, the model was created by Gunnar Sillén, an artist and passionate expert on Scandinavian maritime life. 

More than just a replica, the Tordmulen carries strong emotional weight, it’s the very motorboat on which Gunnar spent much of his childhood and youth, sailing with his grandparents through the Baltic Sea archipelagos. 

The Tordmulen was designed in 1931 by C.G. Pettersson, one of Sweden’s most renowned naval architects, and built at the Fröbergs shipyard on the island of Lidingö, near Stockholm. It was commissioned by Carl Juhlin-Dannfelt, affectionately known to Gunnar as “Grandpa Charlie.” 

The boat measured 11.6 meters in length and was powered by a 180 HP Sterling gasoline engine, capable of reaching speeds up to 21 knots. 

According to Gunnar, the Tordmulen could be recognized from afar by the “large white mustache of foam” that surrounded its bow as it sliced through the water. It was aboard the Tordmulen that Gunnar first learned to read nautical charts, to navigate, and, above all, to fall in love with life at sea. 

The journeys between Stockholm and the family’s summer home in Ägnö, along with stops in the many beautiful natural harbors of the Swedish coast, left a lasting impression on him, blending a deep respect for nature with a sense of adventure and strong family bonds. 

The name Tordmulen is also the Swedish name for the bird Alca torda (razorbill), which inhabits coastal areas of the North Atlantic. 

The paper model of the Tordmulen is a realistic, compact, and finely executed representation. The entire model fits on a single A4 sheet, yet it impresses with its balance of structural simplicity and visual accuracy. 

The cabin, hull, smokestack, and small deck details are all carefully designed, with an elegant finish that closely matches the original boat. The build is accessible even to beginners, but the final result is worthy of a place on any collector’s shelf.

Mais do que uma simples réplica, o Tordmulen carrega uma forte carga emocional: trata-se do barco a motor no qual Gunnar passou parte importante de sua infância e juventude, navegando com os avós pelos arquipélagos do mar Báltico.

Majgu Island Lighthouse Paper Model In 1/160 Scale - by Gunnar Sillén

Created by Swedish designer and modeler Gunnar Sillén, from the website Bildrum, this is the Majgu Island Lighthouse papercraft. The entire model occupies just one printed sheet and is in 1/160 scale (N scale).

Regarding this lighthouse, Mr. Sillén said: - "In letters and in public contexts, the name of the island is written as Magö. But on Gotland they say and write Majgu. 

Since time immemorial, the island has been an important point of guidance for sailors heading to the sheltered port of Slite or other Gotland limestone loading ports such as Hide and St Olofsholm. 

The island probably has had some type of lighthouse since ancient times to facilitate navigation. At the beginning of the 19th century the lighthouse was built of wood and had a barrel as a top sign on the bow and perhaps it is not so strange that they placed a barrel as the most important export from the ports of Majgu since the 17th century was quicklime delivered in wooden barrels. 

In Gustaf af Klint's 1839 description for the "Atlas Sveriges Sjö" there is text about the lighthouse that describes it thus: "a tower whose buttresses in the upper two-thirds are covered with boards a few meters below the barrel which stands on top.

In 1851, the wooden lighthouse was replaced with a stepped white brick and stone structure. But still with a barrel as the top sign. And next to the lighthouse, a similar white ladder guardhouse was built for the lighthouse keepers. 

The lighthouse increasingly fell into disuse during the latter part of the 20th century, as radio and radar provided new conditions for safe piloting and navigation. In the 1980s, the lighthouse was completely destroyed.

In 1990 it was rebuilt by the association of Othem Boge's home village. Criado pelo designer e modelista sueco Gunnar Sillén, do site Bildrum, este é o papercraft do Farol da Ilha de Majgu. O modelo todo ocupa apenas uma folha impressa e está na escala 1/160 (escala N). 

A respeito deste farol, o Sr. Sillén disse: - "Nas cartas e em contextos públicos, o nome da ilha é escrito como Magö. Mas em Gotland eles dizem e escrevem Majgu.

The Silver Bus - 1968`s Cytroen HY Paper Model In 1/43 Scale by Gunnar Sillén

This papercraft of a Cytroen HY 1968 in 1/43 scale was created by Swedish architect, designer and modeler Gunnar Sillén, from Bilrum website. 

In addition to kindly making the model available, Mr. Sillén wrote a short report that I took the liberty of transcribing below, as the original text is in Swedish. 

As I used Goolge Translator to translate the text, some passages were truncated and confusing, so I made small adaptations to make them make sense, but the text itself is the same. 

As the model was originally published in 2018 for 2019, at the end of the text Mr. Sillén left wishes for Christmas and a good year 2019 and I decided to leave this part as in the original text.

"There was a time when I needed a travel vehicle for both work and leisure, as work was related to visiting industrial monuments and historic buildings in Europe and leisure was about providing good times with my friends. children. 

In 1971 I found the ideal car. It was a French Citroen Hy built in 1968 as a bus for 14 people and used by a mountain hotel in northern Sweden. 

The passenger seats could be temporarily dismantled to make room for light summer furniture that I built myself and which were easily foldable seats and table which when folded made room for a large flat sleeping area. 

Sometimes I traveled alone and sometimes my whole family spent pleasant weeks together, moving slowly from one place to another in Western and Eastern Europe. In fact, we saw the bus almost as if it were a living creature. He has definitely become an important member of our family. 

We all cried when we had to give it up to someone with better technical and financial resources to keep it running. And since then the bus appears in my dreams, accusing me of having abandoned it. 

This year I had the opportunity to look at my old photos of the bus as part of a photography project. I also discovered that the bus still exists and went to visit it in a garage in southern Sweden. I found that it provided great travel experiences for other families as well. I hope it is restored and given a new life. 

And now, finally, I realized the idea I had 40 years ago of making a paper model of our bus. The model build pictured above has been completed with clear windows and a detailed interior.

Este papercraft de um Cytroen HY modelo 1968 na escala 1/43 foi criado pelo arquiteto, designer e modelista sueco Gunnar Sillén, do site Bilrum. 

Além de gentilmente disponibilizar o modelo, o Sr. Sillén escreveu um pequeno relato que eu tomei a liberdade de transcrever abaixo, já que o texto original está em sueco. 

Como usei o Goolge Translator para traduzir o texto, algumas passagens ficarm truncadas e confusas, então fiz pequenas adaptações para que fizessem sentido, mas o texto em si é o mesmo. 

Como o modelo foi originalmente publicado em 2018 para 2019, no final do texto o Sr. Sillén deixou votos de Natal e um bom ano de 2019 e eu resolvi deixar esta parte como no texto original. 

"Houve um tempo em que eu precisei de um veículo de viagem tanto para o trabalho quanto para o lazer, sendo que s trabalho era relacionado com visitações a monumentos industriais e edifícios históricos na Europa e o lazer dizia respeito a proporcionar bons momentos junto a meus filhos. 

 Em 1971 encontrei o carro ideal. Era um Citroen Hy francês construído em 1968 como ônibus para 14 pessoas e usado por um hotel de montanha no norte da Suécia. 

Os assentos dos passageiros poderiam ser temporariamente desmontados para dar espaço a mobília leve de verão que eu mesmo construí e que hora eram assentos e mesa facilmente dobráveis e que quando dobrados davam espaço para uma grande área de dormir plana. 

Às vezes eu viajava sozinho e às vezes toda a minha família passava semanas agradáveis junta, movendo-nos lentamente de um lugar para outro na Europa Ocidental e Oriental. Na verdade, víamos o ônibus quase como se fosse uma criatura viva. Com certeza se tornou um membro importante da nossa família. 

Todos choramos quando tivemos que nos desfazer dela para alguém com melhores recursos técnicos e financeiros para mantê-la funcionando. E desde então o ônibus aparece em meus sonhos me acusando-me de tê-lo abandonado. 

Este ano tive a oportunidade de ver minhas fotos antigas do ônibus como parte de um projeto fotográfico. Também descobri que o ônibus ainda existe e fui visitá-lo em uma garagem no sul da Suécia. Descobri que ele proporcionou ótimas experiências de viagem também para outras famílias. Espero que seja restaurado e ganhe uma nova vida. 

E agora, finalmente, concretizei a ideia que já tinha há 40 anos de fazer um modelo de papel do nosso ônibus. O modelo construído na foto acima foi completado com janelas transparentes e um interior detalhado.
