A Fantasy Treehouse Papercraft For Dioramas, RPGs And Wargames by R-N-W & RPG Toons

Here is a very nice Treehouse Papercraft created by Rose, from R-N-W & RPG Toons, a charming little paper model that should be especially interesting for RPG players, wargamers and anyone who enjoys building miniature fantasy or woodland dioramas.

The model represents a rustic wooden treehouse built around a large tree, with small platforms, wooden walls, roofs and a suspended bridge connecting different parts of the structure. The hand-drawn textures and slightly whimsical design give the whole model a pleasant handmade appearance, something that works particularly well with this kind of fantasy scenery.

Although it is presented as a treehouse, the model can easily become part of many different settings. It could be used as a small outpost hidden in a forest, a home for elves or other woodland inhabitants, a lookout post, a refuge for adventurers or simply an unusual building in a fantasy village. With a little imagination, several copies could even be combined to create a small settlement among the trees.

For RPG and tabletop gaming, this kind of model is also useful because it adds some vertical variety to the scenery. Instead of having all the buildings and characters at ground level, the platforms and bridge create different heights and give the scene a more interesting appearance. Of course, it can also simply be built as a small standalone display model.

An interesting detail about this papercraft is how the original idea came about. The creators asked their followers for suggestions, and the winning concept involved houses connected among the treetops. That idea eventually inspired this printable treehouse, which was then made available as a free download.

The papercraft is provided as a PDF file, and the creator indicates that it should be printed at 100% scale. The download is available directly from the original rpgtoons Patreon post.

As with many paper models of this type, there is also plenty of room for personal touches. A builder could add vegetation around the base, small branches, moss, miniature figures, barrels, crates, signs or other accessories. A simple cardboard or foam board base with some grass and stones would already turn it into a complete little diorama.

This is one of those models that does not need to be overly complicated to be interesting. The unusual subject, the hand-drawn textures and the possibility of using it in many different scenes give this Treehouse Papercraft a lot of character.

A very nice little project for a quiet afternoon of paper modeling, and a useful addition to fantasy, RPG and wargame scenery.

Cyber City Modular Sci-Fi Papercraft For Dioramas And Wargames by Black Magic Craft

Cyber City is a very interesting set of printable scenery created by Black Magic Craft for building modular cyberpunk and science-fiction environments, especially designed for tabletop wargames, RPGs, skirmish games and miniature photography.

Rather than being a conventional papercraft made of complete pieces with folding and gluing tabs, Cyber City uses a different and very practical construction system. Most of the printable parts consist of flat walls, roofs, floors and decorative panels intended to be glued onto a stronger material, such as cardboard, cardstock, recycled packaging board or even thin sheets of wood.

This construction method makes a lot of sense considering the main purpose of the set. Wargame scenery is constantly handled, moved around the table, rearranged to create different layouts and stored away after each game, so the structures need to be considerably stronger than an ordinary display papercraft.

The printable sheets include a large variety of industrial and futuristic surfaces and details, such as weathered concrete and metal walls, rusty grilles, ventilation systems, electrical boxes, pipes, doors, graffiti, warning stripes and rooftop equipment, all combining to create a convincing worn industrial and cyberpunk atmosphere.

The modular nature of Cyber City is one of its strongest features. Buildings can be created at different heights, stacked, connected by walkways and arranged in many different ways. With the same collection of pieces you can build a compact industrial complex, several separate city blocks or a much larger urban battlefield, depending on the available space and the number of modules you decide to make.

The photos on this post show one of the possible configurations using Cyber City together with miniatures and give a very good idea of how versatile this type of scenery can be for tabletop games.

Black Magic Craft also published a video showing the construction of the scenery, which is especially useful for understanding how the printable textures and panels are transformed into strong three-dimensional terrain pieces. Cyber City is completely free to download from the Black Magic Craft website. There is, however, one small detail worth mentioning so that nobody is surprised by the download process. Although the model is listed at US$0.00, you need to provide a valid email address and create a free account on the website before downloading the files.

No banking or credit card information is required. I went through the entire process myself and downloaded the files before preparing this post. There were no charges, hidden subscriptions or tricks involved.

If you enjoy building scenery for science-fiction miniatures, cyberpunk dioramas or tabletop games, Cyber City is a particularly useful project because, instead of providing only one finished building, it gives you a collection of modular elements that can be combined and rearranged to create a different city every time.

Change of Address - A Two-Story Apartment Pop-Up Papercraft by Andrew Leman

Here is Change of Address, a very unusual pop-up papercraft created by Andrew Leman which, instead of representing a famous building, a vehicle or a character, reproduces in paper the very apartment where the author was living at the time. The model was designed as a kind of three-dimensional card that, when opened, gradually transforms into a small two-story architectural model, revealing the rooms, walls, stairs and different levels of the residence.

The most interesting thing is precisely the way the model transforms. According to Andrew, the apartment can be completely unfolded in seven stages, going from an almost flat structure to a complete three-dimensional representation. The old images available on his website show this opening sequence and are very helpful for understanding how this clever folding system works.

Despite its relatively simple appearance when closed, this is definitely not a papercraft for beginners. The author himself humorously explains that you would need a printer capable of handling paper 36 inches wide, a laminator, a good supply of X-Acto blades, strong glue and a few hours of work to complete the assembly. The original file includes all the cutting, scoring and assembly lines indicated by colors.

The idea came from Andrew's habit of drawing floor plans of the apartments where he lived so that friends and family could get an idea of his surroundings. When he moved into a two-story apartment, he realized that a conventional floor plan was no longer enough to properly show the organization of the space. The solution was to turn that floor plan into something three-dimensional and, to make it even more interesting, to design the whole structure so that it could open and close like a true pop-up.

It is also a great example of the kind of creative project that could be found more often during the early years of the internet, when many artists and designers maintained small personal websites where they freely shared experiments, drawings, fonts, models and other curious works. Fortunately, Andrew Leman's page is still online and the papercraft file can still be downloaded.

The original assembly images available on the website are very small and low-resolution, so I prepared slightly clearer versions to better illustrate the model, trying to preserve as much as possible the appearance of the original photographs without changing the details of the papercraft.

Este é o Change of Address, um papercraft pop-up bastante incomum criado por Andrew Leman e que, em vez de representar um prédio famoso, um veículo ou um personagem, reproduz em papel o próprio apartamento onde o autor morava na época. O modelo foi projetado como uma espécie de cartão tridimensional que, ao ser aberto, se transforma gradualmente em uma pequena maquete arquitetônica de dois andares, revelando os cômodos, paredes, escadas e diferentes níveis da residência.

O mais interessante é justamente a maneira como o modelo se transforma. Segundo Andrew, o apartamento pode ser completamente desdobrado em sete etapas, passando de uma estrutura praticamente plana para uma representação tridimensional completa. As antigas imagens disponíveis em seu site mostram essa sequência de abertura e ajudam bastante a entender como funciona esse engenhoso sistema de dobras.

Apesar da aparência relativamente simples quando visto fechado, este definitivamente não é um papercraft para iniciantes. O próprio autor descreve de forma bem-humorada que seriam necessários uma impressora capaz de trabalhar com papel de 36 polegadas de largura, um laminador, uma boa quantidade de lâminas para estilete, cola resistente e algumas horas de trabalho para completar a montagem. O arquivo original possui todas as linhas de corte, vinco e montagem indicadas por cores.

A ideia nasceu porque Andrew tinha o hábito de desenhar plantas dos apartamentos onde morava para mostrar aos amigos e familiares como eram os lugares. Quando passou a viver em um apartamento de dois andares, percebeu que uma planta convencional já não mostrava muito bem a organização do espaço. A solução foi transformar essa planta em algo tridimensional e, para tornar tudo ainda mais interessante, fazer com que toda a estrutura pudesse abrir e fechar como um verdadeiro pop-up.

É também um ótimo exemplo daquele tipo de projeto criativo que era encontrado com mais frequência nos primeiros anos da internet, quando muitos artistas e designers mantinham pequenas páginas pessoais onde compartilhavam gratuitamente experiências, desenhos, fontes, modelos e outros trabalhos curiosos. Felizmente, a página de Andrew Leman continua online e o arquivo do papercraft ainda pode ser baixado.

As imagens originais da montagem disponíveis no site são bastante pequenas e de baixa resolução, por isso preparei versões um pouco mais nítidas para ilustrar melhor o modelo, procurando preservar ao máximo a aparência das fotografias originais, sem modificar os detalhes do papercraft.

Harbor Gate Depot Papercraft Diorama In 1/64 Scale - by PapermauDownload Now!

Here is the Harbor Gate Depot, my new papercraft diorama in 1/64 scale, now ready for free download.

I created this small scene especially to be used with die-cast miniatures such as Hot Wheels, Matchbox and other vehicles in a similar scale. The idea was to make a compact industrial setting that could be used to display miniatures, take photos, create small scenes or simply add a little more life to a collection.

The Harbor Gate Depot represents a small loading and unloading area beside an old warehouse. The scene has weathered brick walls, a large main gate, a loading platform with two bays and sliding doors, an office door, a small staircase and a worn concrete and asphalt yard with safety lines and markings.

The diorama also works very well with 1/43 scale vehicles. In fact, two of the photos in this post show a yellow 1976 Chevrolet Opala SS in 1/43 scale, a true Brazilian classic, while the other photos featuring vehicles show Hot Wheels models in 1/64 scale. This gives a good idea of how the same scenery can work with miniatures in both scales.

The complete file has seven pages. The first is the cover and the other six contain all the parts needed to build the diorama.

On the sheet with signs and advertisements I included more options than the model actually needs. The main sign, the largest one and the one that gives the diorama its name, comes in two different versions to give modelers a little more freedom. I also added several smaller safety, loading, unloading and service signs, as well as some old-style advertisements, so each modeler can choose what to use and create a slightly different version of the Harbor Gate Depot.

The doors were designed with tabs for normal paper assembly. However, modelers who usually glue the printed parts directly onto cardboard and eliminate the tabs can also use this method here. By laminating some pieces with thicker paper or cardboard, doors, gates and other details can be placed a little farther back from the wall surface. It is a simple trick, but it creates real shadows and gives the model a much better sense of depth.

In the first two posts about the Harbor Gate Depot I showed the construction almost step by step, from cutting and scoring the parts to the finished model. I also shared some of the techniques I normally use in my own builds, such as making fold lines with an empty ballpoint pen, reinforcing some parts from the inside with cardboard, coloring the white edges of the paper after cutting and adding small details and signs to make the scene more interesting.

So, if you have any questions while building the model, it is worth taking a look at those two previous posts. At the end of this post, together with the download link, I will also leave the links to Part 1 and Part 2 of the construction.

To avoid making this post too long, farther down in the comments section I will leave a simple explanation of how to configure a standard printer to print this diorama in 1/32 scale and also in the scale commonly used for G.I. Joe-type action figures.

Criei este pequeno cenário especialmente para ser usado com miniaturas die-cast como Hot Wheels, Matchbox e outros veículos em escala semelhante. A ideia foi fazer um cenário industrial compacto que pudesse ser usado para expor miniaturas, tirar fotos, criar pequenas cenas ou simplesmente dar um pouco mais de vida a uma coleção.

O Harbor Gate Depot representa uma pequena área de carga e descarga junto a um velho armazém. O cenário tem paredes de tijolos envelhecidos, um grande portão principal, uma plataforma de carga com duas baias e portas de correr, uma porta para o escritório, uma pequena escada e um pátio de concreto e asfalto bastante gasto, com faixas e marcações de segurança.

O diorama também funciona muito bem com veículos na escala 1/43. Inclusive, em duas das fotos deste post aparece um Chevrolet Opala SS 1976 amarelo em escala 1/43, um verdadeiro clássico brasileiro, enquanto as outras fotos que mostram veículos trazem modelos Hot Wheels em escala 1/64. Assim dá para ter uma boa ideia de como o mesmo cenário pode funcionar com miniaturas nas duas escalas.

O arquivo completo tem sete páginas. A primeira é a capa e as outras seis trazem todas as peças necessárias para montar o diorama.

Na folha de placas e anúncios incluí mais opções do que o modelo realmente precisa. A placa principal, a maior de todas e que dá nome ao diorama, aparece em duas versões diferentes, justamente para dar um pouco mais de liberdade aos modelistas. Também coloquei várias placas menores de segurança, carga, descarga e serviços, além de alguns anúncios em estilo antigo, assim cada modelista pode escolher quais usar e criar uma versão um pouco diferente do Harbor Gate Depot.

As portas foram desenhadas com abas para facilitar a montagem normal em papel. Porém, os modelistas que costumam colar as peças impressas diretamente sobre papel cartão e eliminar as abas também podem usar esse método aqui. Laminando algumas peças com papel mais grosso ou papel cartão, é possível colocar portas, portões e outros detalhes um pouco mais para dentro da superfície das paredes. É um truque simples, mas cria sombras reais e dá uma sensação bem maior de profundidade ao modelo.

Nos dois primeiros posts sobre o Harbor Gate Depot mostrei a montagem praticamente passo a passo, desde o corte e os vincos das peças até o modelo terminado. Também deixei algumas dicas que costumo usar nas minhas próprias montagens, como fazer os vincos com uma caneta sem tinta, reforçar algumas partes por dentro com papel cartão, pintar as bordas brancas do papel depois do corte e adicionar pequenos detalhes e placas para deixar o cenário mais interessante.

A Hand-Drawn Minas Tirith Papercraft From The Lord Of The Rings by Will Kalif

This beautiful Minas Tirith papercraft was created by Will Kalif, the author of the veteran American website Storm The Castle, and it is one of those models whose greatest appeal comes from its charm and creativity rather than from an attempt at extreme complexity. The complete project is made up of 12 sheets, and the entire model was drawn by hand by the author, something that can easily be noticed in the lines, textures and small architectural details that give the construction a very distinctive appearance, almost as if we were assembling an illustration taken directly from an old sketchbook.

The model represents Minas Tirith, the great fortified city of the Kingdom of Gondor in the universe of The Lord of the Rings. Will simplified its monumental architecture in a very clever way, transforming it into a paper project that is relatively easy to build. Even so, many of the city's most recognizable features are present, including the successive levels of defensive walls, the towers, the huge central rocky formation and the citadel located at the highest point.

The result is a very free and handcrafted interpretation of Minas Tirith, quite different from those highly detailed digital models made from hundreds of tiny pieces. And that is precisely where much of its charm lies. Each wall, tower, window and architectural detail was rendered with simple hand-drawn artwork, preserving the unmistakable homemade character that fits perfectly with the philosophy of Storm The Castle.

According to Will, this is a fun project that can be completed in just a few hours. He also calls attention to the choice of paper, recommending something heavier so that the large curved walls remain firm after assembly. Minas Tirith, also known as the White City, is one of the most important locations in Middle-earth, created by J. R. R. Tolkien. Capital of Gondor during the events of The Lord of the Rings, the city was built on seven successive levels protected by massive walls and played a central role during the War of the Ring, especially during the siege and the great battle fought before its gates. Its tiered structure and dramatic position against the mountain also make it one of the most recognizable constructions in Tolkien's universe.

The creator of this papercraft, Will Kalif, is an old acquaintance of Papermau readers. In fact, this very same Minas Tirith model first appeared here on the blog back in February 2012, when Papermau was still less than a year old. Since then, many other projects created by Will have appeared on these pages, including castles, cathedrals, dioramas, tatebankos and many historical and fantasy constructions.

Storm The Castle is one of those websites from the old internet that deserves to be explored slowly. Maintained by Will Kalif, the site brings together thousands of free pages devoted not only to papercraft, but also to dioramas, miniatures, castles, medieval projects, drawing, astronomy, rockets, model making, stop motion and many other creative activities. The basic idea behind the site is to encourage creativity, learning and the pleasure of building things with your own hands using simple and accessible materials.

If you like The Lord of the Rings, fantasy architecture or simply hand-drawn papercrafts, this little Minas Tirith is certainly a very pleasant project to build. And after downloading the model, it is worth taking some time to explore Storm The Castle, because Minas Tirith represents only a very small part of the enormous number of projects that Will has been sharing freely on the internet for many years.

Este belo papercraft de Minas Tirith foi criado por Will Kalif, responsável pelo veterano site norte-americano Storm The Castle, e é daqueles modelos que conquistam mais pelo charme e pela criatividade do que pela busca de uma reprodução extremamente complexa. O projeto completo é formado por 12 folhas e todo o modelo foi desenhado à mão pelo autor, algo facilmente perceptível nas linhas, nas texturas e nos pequenos detalhes arquitetônicos, que dão à construção uma aparência muito particular, quase como se estivéssemos montando uma ilustração saída diretamente de um velho caderno de desenhos.

O modelo representa Minas Tirith, a grande cidade-fortaleza do Reino de Gondor no universo de O Senhor dos Anéis. Will simplificou sua arquitetura monumental de maneira bastante inteligente para transformá-la em um projeto de papel relativamente fácil de construir. Mesmo assim, vários dos elementos mais característicos da cidade estão presentes, como as muralhas dispostas em níveis sucessivos, as torres, a enorme formação rochosa central e a cidadela localizada no ponto mais alto.

O resultado é uma interpretação bastante livre e artesanal de Minas Tirith, muito diferente daqueles modelos digitais extremamente detalhados compostos por centenas de pequenas peças. E justamente aí está boa parte de seu encanto. Cada muralha, torre, janela e detalhe arquitetônico foi resolvido com desenhos simples feitos à mão, mantendo aquele aspecto de verdadeiro projeto caseiro que combina perfeitamente com a filosofia do Storm The Castle.

Segundo o próprio Will, trata-se de um projeto divertido que pode ser terminado em apenas algumas horas. Ele também chama atenção para a escolha do papel, recomendando um papel mais pesado para que as grandes muralhas curvas permaneçam firmes depois da montagem. Na página original ele sugere papel do tipo 110 lb index, algo aproximadamente equivalente a um papel cartão de cerca de 200 g/m².

A ideia por trás do site é incentivar a criatividade, o aprendizado e o prazer de construir coisas com as próprias mãos usando materiais simples e acessíveis.

Harbor Gate Depot Papercraft Diorama In 1/64 Scale - WIP Part 2 And Finished Model - by Papermau

Here is the second and final part of the assembly of the Harbor Gate Depot, my new papercraft diorama in 1/64 scale. The photos below continue exactly where the previous post ended, showing some construction details, small finishing tricks, the addition of the signs and, finally, the completed model with a couple of 1/64 scale die-cast vehicles to give a better idea of its proportions.

Aqui está a segunda e última parte da montagem do Harbor Gate Depot, meu novo diorama de papel em escala 1/64. As fotos abaixo continuam exatamente de onde o post anterior parou, mostrando alguns detalhes da construção, pequenos truques de acabamento, a colocação das placas e, finalmente, o modelo completamente montado, com dois veículos die-cast em escala 1/64 para dar uma ideia melhor de suas proporções.

In this photo you can see the large warehouse door before it was installed on the wall. As you may notice, I used watercolor pencils in colors similar to the printed textures to disguise the white edges of the paper. This is a very simple trick, but it makes a big difference, especially on dark or heavily weathered parts where exposed white paper edges can be quite noticeable.

Nesta foto vocês podem ver o grande portão do armazém antes de ser instalado na parede. Como podem perceber, usei lápis de cor aquareláveis em tons semelhantes aos das texturas impressas para disfarçar as bordas brancas do papel. É um truque muito simples, mas que faz bastante diferença, principalmente em peças escuras ou muito envelhecidas, onde as bordas brancas expostas do papel podem chamar bastante a atenção.

Here the opening for the large warehouse door has already been completely cut out of the brick wall, while the door itself is being prepared separately. Instead of simply leaving the door printed flat on the wall, I decided to mount it slightly recessed, creating real shadows and giving this part of the building a little more depth.

Aqui a abertura para o grande portão do armazém já foi completamente recortada da parede de tijolos, enquanto o próprio portão está sendo preparado separadamente. Em vez de simplesmente deixar o portão impresso de forma plana na parede, decidi montá-lo ligeiramente recuado, criando sombras reais e dando um pouco mais de profundidade a esta parte da construção.

And here is the same wall with the warehouse door already installed. The small difference in depth between the brick wall and the recessed door may seem insignificant when the parts are still on the workbench, but once everything is assembled it creates a much more convincing three-dimensional effect.

E aqui está a mesma parede com o portão do armazém já instalado. A pequena diferença de profundidade entre a parede de tijolos e o portão recuado pode parecer insignificante enquanto as peças ainda estão sobre a bancada, mas depois de tudo montado ela cria um efeito tridimensional muito mais convincente.

This photo shows something that will never be visible when the diorama is finished: the internal reinforcement of one of the structures. For this model I reused cardboard from frozen pizza packaging, cutting it into small pieces and strips and gluing them inside the part. Besides being quite rigid and resistant, this type of cardboard usually has a waxed or coated surface, which also gives it some resistance to moisture and water. The reinforcements do not have to look nice because they will be completely hidden; their only purpose is to keep the finished piece rigid, flat and resistant. It is also a good way to reuse material that would otherwise end up in the trash.

Esta foto mostra algo que nunca ficará visível quando o diorama estiver terminado: o reforço interno de uma das estruturas. Neste modelo reaproveitei papel cartão de embalagens de pizza congelada, cortando-o em pequenos pedaços e tiras e colando-os pelo lado interno da peça. Além de ser bastante rígido e resistente, esse tipo de papel cartão geralmente possui uma superfície encerada ou revestida, o que também lhe dá certa resistência à umidade e à água. Os reforços não precisam ficar bonitos porque serão completamente escondidos; sua única função é manter a peça terminada rígida, plana e resistente. Também é uma boa maneira de reaproveitar um material que normalmente acabaria no lixo.

At this stage most of the main parts were already assembled, so I made a temporary arrangement to check how everything would fit together. The two brick walls, the loading platform, the small staircase and the ground section already give a good idea of the final shape of the Harbor Gate Depot and also make it possible to check the proportions and available space for 1/64 scale vehicles.

Nesta etapa a maioria das peças principais já estava montada, então fiz uma disposição provisória para conferir como tudo se encaixaria. As duas paredes de tijolos, a plataforma de carga, a pequena escada e o piso já dão uma boa ideia da forma final do Harbor Gate Depot e também permitem conferir as proporções e o espaço disponível para veículos em escala 1/64.

With the basic structure practically finished, it was time to start adding the signs. I prepared a complete sheet with warehouse identification signs, safety warnings, dock signs and some old-style commercial advertisements. There are more signs than necessary on purpose, so each modeler can choose which ones to use and create a slightly different and more personalized version of the Harbor Gate Depot.

Com a estrutura básica praticamente pronta, chegou a hora de começar a adicionar as placas. Preparei uma folha completa com placas de identificação do armazém, avisos de segurança, sinalização do cais e alguns anúncios comerciais em estilo antigo. Há mais placas do que o necessário de propósito, para que cada modelista possa escolher quais deseja utilizar e criar uma versão um pouco diferente e mais personalizada do Harbor Gate Depot.

Here the signs have already been cut out and I was testing their positions before gluing them permanently. The large Harbor Gate Depot sign naturally becomes the main identification of the building, while the smaller Receiving Bay signs and warning notices help break up the large brick surface and give the warehouse a much more lived-in and believable appearance.

Aqui as placas já foram recortadas e eu estava testando suas posições antes de colá-las definitivamente. Naturalmente, a grande placa Harbor Gate Depot se torna a principal identificação da construção, enquanto as placas menores das áreas de recebimento e os avisos de segurança ajudam a quebrar a grande superfície de tijolos e dão ao armazém uma aparência muito mais vivida e convincente.

And finally, here is the Harbor Gate Depot completely assembled. I placed two 1/64 scale die-cast vehicles in the scene to give a better idea of the dimensions and proportions of the model. With the vehicles in place, the loading dock, warehouse doors, weathered pavement markings, old brick walls and all those little signs finally come together as a complete miniature scene.

Now all that remains is to arrange the parts on the sheets in the most economical way possible, trying to use as little paper as I can, and then finish the graphic layout and final artwork. If everything goes as planned, I believe that sometime during this new week I will be able to make the Harbor Gate Depot available for download.

E finalmente, aqui está o Harbor Gate Depot completamente montado. Coloquei dois veículos die-cast em escala 1/64 no cenário para dar uma ideia melhor das dimensões e proporções do modelo. Com os veículos em seus lugares, a plataforma de carga, os portões do armazém, as marcações desgastadas no piso, as velhas paredes de tijolos e todas aquelas pequenas placas finalmente passam a formar uma cena em miniatura completa.

Agora só falta organizar as peças nas folhas da forma mais econômica possível, tentando gastar o mínimo de papel, e depois finalizar a diagramação gráfica e a arte final. Se tudo correr como planejado, acredito que em algum momento desta semana que está começando agora poderei disponibilizar o Harbor Gate Depot para download.
