Sometimes the simplest papercrafts are also the most charming, and I think this collection of little houses from Off-Beat Crafts is a great example of that.

The series started in 2005 and continued until 2023, reaching a total of 18 different models. They are simple, colorful little houses with quite varied designs, some more modern and others more traditional, but all sharing that clean and pleasant look that works especially well when several of them are displayed together.

The author is Japanese architect Sakura Hara, who runs the Kukan Sosaku OBC architectural office in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Perhaps that helps explain why, even though the models are so simple, the houses have such interesting architectural shapes and look quite different from one another.

According to Sakura Hara herself, these little houses originally started as designs for New Year's cards and eventually became a series that kept growing over the years. There was no new model in 2019, but the series returned with new houses in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

After that, the collection stopped. I could not find any explanation for why, so I hope Sakura Hara is doing well and simply decided not to continue the series, or perhaps just put this little project aside for a while.

One of the things I like most about these models is their simplicity. Each house is made from a single main piece, so assembly basically consists of cutting, scoring, folding and gluing. No dozens of tiny parts to organize or complicated assembly to worry about.

Because of this, I think these models can be used in many different ways. The houses could be part of small dioramas, used as scenery for wargames, included in school projects, or simply assembled and displayed together on a shelf. Put several of them side by side and you can create a very colorful and cheerful little paper town.

The website also makes things easier for anyone who wants the complete collection. Besides downloading each house separately, there is an option to download all 18 models together in a single ZIP file.

Another interesting detail is that the Off-Beat Crafts website does not exist only to host these papercrafts. It is also the professional website of Sakura Hara's office, featuring work involving architecture, interiors, exteriors and 3D modeling. In a way, these little paper houses feel like a more playful extension of her professional work.

It is a simple, cheerful and easy-to-build collection, but one with plenty of personality. And perhaps that is exactly why, after so many years on the internet, these little houses are still so pleasant to look at and build today.

A série começou em 2005 e continuou até 2023, chegando a 18 modelos diferentes. São casinhas bem simples, coloridas e com formatos variados, algumas mais modernas, outras mais tradicionais, mas todas com aquele visual limpo e agradável que fica muito bonito quando várias são colocadas juntas.

A autora é a arquiteta japonesa Sakura Hara, responsável pelo escritório Kukan Sosaku OBC, em Hakodate, Hokkaido. Talvez isso explique um pouco por que, mesmo sendo modelos tão simples, as casas têm formas arquitetônicas interessantes e bem diferentes umas das outras.

Pelo que a própria autora conta no site, essas pequenas casas começaram como motivos para cartões de Ano-Novo e acabaram virando uma série que foi crescendo ao longo dos anos. Em 2019 não houve um novo modelo, mas depois vieram novas casas em 2020, 2021, 2022 e 2023.

Depois disso a coleção parou. Não encontrei nenhuma explicação sobre o motivo, então espero que Sakura Hara esteja bem e que simplesmente tenha decidido não continuar com a série, ou talvez apenas tenha deixado o projeto de lado por algum tempo.

Uma das coisas que mais gosto nesses modelos é a simplicidade. Cada casa é feita a partir de uma única peça principal, então a montagem é basicamente recortar, vincar, dobrar e colar. Nada de dezenas de pecinhas pequenas ou montagens complicadas.

Por causa disso, acho que são modelos muito versáteis. Dá para usar as casas em pequenos dioramas, em cenários para wargames, em trabalhos escolares ou simplesmente montar várias e deixar numa estante. Juntas, elas formam uma pequena cidade de papel muito colorida e bem divertida.

A Seaside Paper Tunnel Book - A Layered Papercraft Diorama by Cabinet of Curiosity Studio

This curious papercraft created by Cabinet of Curiosity Studio is called a Paper Tunnel Book and represents a seaside landscape from South Tyneside, in the northeast of England. Instead of forming a closed structure like most paper models, here several cut-out scenes are positioned one behind the other, separated by two accordion-folded side pieces. When viewed from the front, the different layers create a surprising sense of depth and transform a few simple sheets of paper into a small three-dimensional scene.

The model is composed of five different scenes, which must be cut out and then glued to the folded side sections. One interesting detail is that the builder can decide the distance between the layers and even slightly change their order, altering the perception of depth in the scene. Cabinet of Curiosity Studio recommends using paper or cardstock between 180 and 200 g/m², and the project can be printed in either A4 or A3 format. A Medieval Castle Papercraft From The Early Days Of The Internet by Stefan Stihl

This impressive medieval paper castle was created by Stefan Stihl, the man behind the old German website Ritterburgen.de. The project was designed as a modular model, allowing towers, walls and other parts to be printed several times and freely combined. This means that each modeler can create a unique fortress, from a relatively compact castle to a much larger medieval complex.

The PDF file contains 22 pages and includes a wide variety of elements, such as crenellated towers, wall sections, different internal buildings, a fortified gateway, a drawbridge and even a chapel. Some sheets are intended to be printed more than once, taking full advantage of the modular nature of the project. The templates are presented mainly in black and white, giving modelers the freedom to choose their own colors before assembly.

There is also an interesting story behind this papercraft. The castle was originally designed using the old Windows Draw 4.01 program, and Stefan Hahn later converted the project into PowerPoint and PDF formats, making it much easier to print on modern computers. Ritterburgen.de records visitors since May 25, 1999, making this model a genuine survivor from the early days of the internet.

Easy-to-Build Scientific Research Vessel Papercraft for Kids by JOIDES Resolution

This interesting papercraft reproduces the JOIDES Resolution, a large scientific research vessel, and is available for free on the project’s official website as an educational activity. The model is relatively simple, but it includes some very nice details, such as the large drilling derrick, the bridge, helipad, cranes and even a tiny helicopter to complete the scene.

The PDF file has only three pages: the first one contains the illustrated assembly instructions, while pages 2 and 3 contain all the parts needed to build the ship. The creators recommend printing these two pages on heavyweight cardstock.

Despite its relatively simple appearance, there are some interesting details in the assembly. The hull is gradually shaped to follow the curve of the deck, and several small slots need to be cut to accommodate the drilling derrick and other components. The cranes are assembled separately, as are the bridge, helipad and the little helicopter.

The helicopter is a nice little model in itself: its two halves are glued together, the rotor blades are folded down and the small landing skids are opened so that it can stand on its own. Once everything is finished, it can be placed on the ship’s helipad.

As for the real JOIDES Resolution, it was a scientific research vessel specially equipped to drill into the ocean floor and recover long cylindrical samples of sediments and rocks. These samples allowed scientists to study Earth’s geological history, ancient climate changes, the movement of tectonic plates and many other processes that took place over millions of years.

The name JOIDES is an abbreviation for Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling, while Resolution pays tribute to HMS Resolution, the ship commanded by British explorer James Cook in the 18th century. Like its famous predecessor, the JOIDES Resolution was also built for exploration, although many of the mysteries it investigated were hidden beneath the ocean floor.

After decades devoted to scientific expeditions around the world, the JOIDES Resolution ended its research operations in September 2024, which gives this little paper model an additional historical value as a miniature reminder of a very unusual and important scientific vessel.
