The Jumping Dog Game - A Vintage Meiji Era Japanese Paper Toy
by Yume Omochae

I posted this vintage Japanese paper model here on the blog in May 2013. It came from a website called Yume Omochae, which unfortunately no longer exists.

Since I had the template saved on my old CDs, I decided to repost it by hosting the file on Google Drive.

I didn't have any information about this template, such as who created it or the year it was made. Using Google Translator, I only managed to get a few words, like "sweet times" and "May". Well, in May I already knew that in Japan they celebrate "Kodomo no Hi," also known as Children's Day or Boys' Festival.

There are several posts published on this blog with this theme. Just search for the tags "Japanese," "culture," and "kids."

It is a day dedicated to celebrating and honoring children, especially boys, wishing them health, happiness, and success in their future lives. During Kodomo no Hi, families display colorful carp streamers called "koinobori," which represent wishes for strength and courage for boys.

Samurai helmets, swords, and other objects associated with the warrior tradition are also displayed, symbolizing bravery and protection. It is a day to value and appreciate children and promote their healthy and happy growth.

As for the time it was published, I noticed that the children's clothes are in a Western style and the boy's outfit is a sailor suit. Further research revealed that Japanese children wore sailor-style clothes during the period known as the "Meiji Era" in Japan, which took place between 1868 and 1912.

During this time, there was significant modernization and Westernization in the country, including the adoption of certain elements of Western fashion.

Sailor-style clothes were inspired by the attire of European sailors and became popular as school uniforms for boys and girls during the Meiji Era and beyond.

These clothes were characterized by blouses with sailor collar-style collars and flaps, paired with shorts or matching skirts. The tradition of wearing sailor-style uniforms in Japanese schools is still observed to this day.

Three Easy-To-Build Buses Papercrafts For Kids - by New South Wales

The government of New South Wales, Australia, operates an extensive bus system that provides public transportation services to the residents and visitors of the region.

These buses are known as "government buses" or "New South Wales government buses".

Government buses in New South Wales are a popular means of transportation for people to get around within cities, suburbs, and rural areas of the region.

They provide a convenient and affordable way to travel, connecting residential areas to urban centers, schools, hospitals, train stations, and other important destinations.

In the now-defunct official website of NSW, which we can fortunately access today through the Wayback Machine, besides three paper bus models, all easy to assemble, there is also an interesting text that I have taken the liberty to replicate below:

"From double deckers buses with conductors, to PrePay only services on bendy buses. Just some of the changes that have occurred during 75 years of government bus services in New South Wales, Australia.

Government bus services were introduced as result of the NSW Transport Act, which the Government introduced in 1931 as a way of rationalising and improving bus services.

Before the Act was introduced there were more than 200 private bus companies, many of which were operating the same routes.

The first Government bus route was introduced on Christmas Day, 25 December 1932.

By 1937 there were 37 routes. Increased bus services helped to connect Sydney and changed the way people travelled."

Mount Grace Priory Monk`s Cell Paper Model - by British Heritage

"Discover the story of the 14th-century monastery Mount Grace Priory and the lives of the monks who lived there, before building your ownpaper model of a monk’s cell.

Life in a cell - Mount Grace Priory in North Yorkshire is a monastery that was founded in 1398 by Thomas de Holland, who was the nephew of King Richard II.

The lives of the medieval Carthusian monks who lived here were different to those of other monks. Each monk lived alone in their own house within the priory, which was known as a cell. The cells all had their own cloister for reading and meditation, as well as a walled garden.

Mount Grace Priory had space for 25 of these cells. The monks rarely saw each other spending most of the day in their cell, where they would say prayers and celebrate Mass. Servants, called ‘lay brothers’, brought food and drink to their cells, passing them through a hatch beside the door.

The monks’ days were only different on Sundays and feast days, when they would eat together, meet to discuss business and discipline, and go to church together to pray.

Most of the cells at Mount Grace had a similar layout. The ground floor had a living room, study and a bedroom with an oratory (private chapel), while there was a work room upstairs. The cloister was formed from a short corridor between the cell and the garden. A second corridor led to the latrine (toilet), which was in the garden wall away from the cell.

The cell gardens at Mount Grace Priory allowed monks to do manual labour without leaving the confines of their living space. The monks grew herbs for use as medicine and for their aromas, as well as beautiful flowering plants that were designed to lift the mind and spirit. They could also grow vegetables in their gardens.

Now you can make your very own model of a monk’s cell at Mount Grace Priory. Ask an adult to download the template and print it out for you, then you can follow the instructions below to build the cell.

Once you’ve completed it, put your model on display to impress your friends – and tell everyone about how medieval monks lived in monasteries!" - British Heritage

- British Heritage

Playstation 3 And Playstation 4 Videogame Consoles
Miniature Paper Models by Kacanonon

Created by Japanese designer Kacanonon and originally posted on the Pepakura Gallery community, here are the miniature paper models (each of which occupies just one sheet of paper) of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 videogame consoles.

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) and the PlayStation 4 (PS4) are videogame consoles developed by Sony. The PS3 was released in 2006, while the PS4 was released in 2013.

The PS3 was a significant evolution compared to Sony's previous consoles. It introduced a more powerful processor, advanced graphics, and the ability to play Blu-rays. The console also had a strong emphasis on online gaming, with the PlayStation Network.

The PS4, on the other hand, brought significant improvements over the PS3. It featured more powerful hardware, detailed graphics, and support for 1080p resolution. The console also introduced social features, such as the "Share" button, which allowed players to share videos and screenshots of their games.

In terms of game libraries, the PS3 had a vast collection, including popular titles like "The Last of Us" and "Uncharted". However, the PS4 expanded the library even further, offering a variety of acclaimed exclusives, such as "God of War" and "Horizon Zero Dawn". Additionally, the PS4 received support for virtual reality gaming with the PlayStation VR.

Another notable difference is the online subscription system. The PS3 required players to subscribe to the PlayStation Plus service to enjoy online features, while on the PS4, a PlayStation Plus subscription was mandatory to play multiplayer online.

In summary, the PS3 was a milestone in the evolution of Sony's consoles, while the PS4 brought significant improvements in terms of hardware, graphics, and online features. Both consoles have an impressive game library, but the PS4 stands out with its collection of acclaimed exclusives and support for virtual reality gaming.

You will find the model in two formats: PDF and PDO (Pepakura), so you can print the model with the PDF format and use the PDO format as guide, because it can be visualized in 3D.

Using Pepakura, when the file opens, you will be asked for a password. Just ignore it and click on the option "open with Pekaura Viewer" that appears right below the password space.

If you don`t have Pepakura Viewer Free Version yet, the link to download is at the end of this post.
