Four Versions Of A Traditional Stone House Paper Model In Five Different Scales - by Edificios de Papel

Created by the talented Spanish designers Aníbal and Mónica, from the classic Edificios de Papel website, these four houses are different graphic interpretations of the same building. The basic structure remains virtually unchanged, but variations in textures, colors and degrees of weathering give each version its own identity.

The model represents a two-story European rural house with simple, solid and highly versatile architecture. The facade features a large wooden gate beneath a stone arch, a smaller side door and two windows on the upper floor, while the gabled roof completes its traditional appearance.

Each of the four versions is available in five different scales: 1/72, HO in 1/87, 1/100, also known as 15 mm scale, N in 1/160 and Z in 1/220. This variety makes it possible to adapt the models to model railways, historical dioramas, tabletop games, wargames and many other types of miniature scenes.

One interesting way to look at these four versions is to imagine that they all represent the same house at different moments throughout its long existence. Although this is only an interpretation, placing them side by side creates something like a small story told through stones, colors, renovations and the marks left by time.

The house entirely covered with natural stone could perhaps represent the building during its early years or after a careful restoration. The second version retains the stone walls but features green doors and windows, as if new residents had renovated the old house and added a little more color and personality to the facade.

In the third version, the aged green tones, stains and signs of moisture suggest the same house many decades later, transformed by exposure to the weather and the passage of time. The fourth version, featuring stone and aged stucco, has an even older appearance, with worn plaster and traces of successive renovations.

Naturally, the four versions can also represent different houses belonging to the same village. When used together, the variations in colors and textures help avoid the repetitive appearance that usually occurs when several copies of the same model are placed side by side.

For a firmer and more durable construction, the designers recommend paper weighing between 160 and 220 g/m². Another option is to print the parts on ordinary paper and glue them onto cardstock or thin cardboard before cutting them out.

Over the years, Edificios de Papel has become a much-loved reference among fans of architectural papercraft and model railways. These four variations show how new colors, textures and signs of weathering can completely transform the atmosphere of a building without changing its original architecture.

A estrutura básica permanece praticamente inalterada, mas as mudanças nas texturas, nas cores e no grau de envelhecimento dão a cada versão uma identidade própria.

O modelo representa uma casa rural europeia de dois pavimentos, com uma arquitetura simples, sólida e muito versátil. A fachada possui um grande portal de madeira sob um arco de pedra, uma porta lateral menor e duas janelas no andar superior, enquanto o telhado de duas águas completa sua aparência tradicional.

Cada uma das quatro versões está disponível em cinco escalas diferentes: 1/72, H0 em 1/87, 1/100, também conhecida como escala de 15 mm, N em 1/160 e Z em 1/220. Essa variedade permite adaptar os modelos a maquetes ferroviárias, dioramas históricos, jogos de mesa, wargames e muitos outros tipos de cenários em miniatura.

Uma maneira interessante de observar estas quatro versões é imaginar que todas representam a mesma casa em diferentes momentos de sua longa existência. Embora essa seja apenas uma interpretação, colocá-las lado a lado cria quase uma pequena história contada por meio das pedras, das cores, das reformas e das marcas deixadas pelo tempo.

A casa inteiramente revestida por pedras naturais talvez represente a construção em seus primeiros anos ou depois de uma cuidadosa restauração. A segunda versão mantém as paredes de pedra, mas recebe portas e janelas verdes, como se novos moradores tivessem reformado a antiga residência e acrescentado um pouco mais de cor e personalidade à fachada.

Na terceira versão, os tons de verde envelhecido, as manchas e as marcas de umidade sugerem a mesma casa muitas décadas depois, modificada pela exposição ao clima e pela passagem do tempo. A quarta versão, com pedra e estuco envelhecido, apresenta uma aparência ainda mais antiga, com reboco desgastado e sinais de sucessivas reformas.

Naturalmente, as quatro versões também podem representar casas diferentes pertencentes a uma mesma vila. Quando utilizadas juntas, as variações de cores e texturas evitam a aparência repetitiva que normalmente surge quando várias cópias de um mesmo modelo são colocadas lado a lado.

Para uma construção mais firme e resistente, os autores recomendam papel com gramatura entre 160 e 220 g/m². Outra possibilidade é imprimir as peças em papel comum e colá-las sobre cartolina ou papelão fino antes do recorte.

Ao longo dos anos, o Edificios de Papel tornou-se uma referência muito querida entre os fãs de papercraft arquitetônico e modelismo ferroviário. Estas quatro variações mostram como novas cores, texturas e sinais de envelhecimento podem transformar completamente a atmosfera de um edifício sem modificar sua arquitetura original.

Edificios de Papel Returns - A Beloved Papercraft Website Comes Back After Ten Years

Today I want to share some news that made me very happy: after ten years of silence, the classic Edificios de Papel website is back.

For those who have been following the papercraft world for many years, especially in the Spanish-speaking community, Edificios de Papel needs no introduction. Created by Aníbal and Mónica, the site has always been a very special place, dedicated to paper models, miniature architecture, creativity and the preservation of a hobby that, although discreet, still brings together talented people from all around the world.

One very distinctive characteristic of their work, and something I have always admired a lot, is the care they put into offering their architectural models in several different scales. If I remember correctly, almost nobody used to do that back then the way they did, and are now doing once again.

This allowed the models to be used by many different audiences: from railway modelers and diorama builders to architects, collectors and people simply interested in building beautiful paper miniatures. It was a rare and extremely generous level of care for everyone who downloaded their models.

In a very sincere text published recently, Aníbal explained the reasons why the site remained inactive for so long. As happens with many personal projects, life changed, time passed, priorities became different and, little by little, that beloved space eventually fell asleep.

There was also another difficulty, something quite common in the old blog era of the internet: access to the site itself had been lost. The password was no longer available, recovering the account was not simple and, for a long time, it seemed that Edificios de Papel would remain only as a fond memory from a very special era of the internet.

Fortunately, after all these years, Aníbal and Mónica managed to recover access to the blog and decided to bring Edificios de Papel back to active life. For me, as someone who has followed this hobby for such a long time, it was really great to see this return.

In another text published on his website, Aníbal also shared a very interesting reflection about papercraft, the changes within the hobby, the new technologies and the way paper models started being created, shared and preserved over the years. The internet has changed a lot, blogs lost space to social media, many websites disappeared, many links were lost, but the spirit of the hobby remains alive thanks to the people who still believe in this kind of work.

And, to my great surprise, in that same text Aníbal made a very beautiful tribute to Papermau. He created a small paper building representing the blog (first image of this post) as a kind of safe harbor for designers, modelers and papercraft enthusiasts in general.

The little house created by Aníbal, with its wooden facade, the Papermau sign and the phrase “Maquetas de Papel de Todo el Mundo”, very generously symbolizes what I have always tried to do here since 2011: maintain a simple, open and welcoming space for everyone who enjoys paper, miniatures, dioramas, architecture and creativity.

I am not very good at making big emotional statements, but I really have to say that I felt truly grateful for the tribute and the kind words. It is very gratifying to realize that a blog made in such a simple, almost handmade way eventually became part of other people’s journey within this small but wonderful world of papercrafts.

So, here I leave my warm regards to Aníbal and Mónica and my best wishes for great success in this new phase of Edificios de Papel.

Hoje quero compartilhar uma notícia que me deixou muito feliz: depois de dez anos de silêncio, o clássico site Edificios de Papel está de volta.

Para quem acompanha o universo dos papercrafts há muitos anos, especialmente no mundo hispânico, o Edificios de Papel dispensa apresentações. Criado por Aníbal e Mónica, o site sempre foi um espaço especial, dedicado aos modelos de papel, à arquitetura em miniatura, à criatividade e à preservação de um hobby que, mesmo discreto, continua reunindo pessoas talentosas ao redor do mundo.

Uma característica muito marcante do trabalho deles, e algo que sempre admirei bastante, é a preocupação em oferecer os modelos arquitetônicos em várias escalas diferentes. Se não me falha a memória, praticamente ninguém fazia isso na época da forma como eles faziam e voltaram a fazer agora.

Isso permitia que os modelos fossem utilizados por públicos muito diferentes: desde modelistas ferroviários e criadores de dioramas até arquitetos, colecionadores e pessoas interessadas simplesmente em montar belas miniaturas de papel. Era um cuidado raro e extremamente generoso com quem baixava os modelos.

Em um texto muito sincero publicado recentemente, Aníbal explicou os motivos que fizeram o site permanecer parado por tanto tempo. Como acontece com muitos projetos pessoais, a vida mudou, o tempo passou, as prioridades foram outras e, pouco a pouco, aquele espaço tão querido acabou ficando adormecido.

Além disso, houve também uma dificuldade bastante comum nessa velha internet dos blogs: o acesso ao próprio site acabou se perdendo. A senha já não estava mais disponível, a recuperação não era simples e, durante muito tempo, parecia que o Edificios de Papel ficaria apenas como uma boa lembrança de uma época muito especial da internet.

Felizmente, depois de todos esses anos, Aníbal e Mónica conseguiram recuperar o acesso ao blog e decidiram trazer o Edificios de Papel de volta à ativa. Para mim, que acompanho esse hobby há tanto tempo, foi muito bom ver esse retorno.

Em outro texto em seu site, Aníbal também fez uma reflexão muito interessante sobre o papercraft, sobre as mudanças no hobby, sobre as novas tecnologias e sobre a forma como os modelos de papel passaram a ser criados, compartilhados e preservados ao longo dos anos. A internet mudou muito, os blogs perderam espaço para as redes sociais, muitos sites desapareceram, muitos links se perderam, mas o espírito do hobby continua vivo graças às pessoas que ainda acreditam nesse tipo de trabalho.

E, para minha grande surpresa, nesse mesmo texto Aníbal fez uma homenagem muito bonita ao Papermau. Ele criou uma pequena construção de papel (primeira imagem deste post) que representa o blog como uma espécie de porto seguro para designers, modelistas e apreciadores do hobby em geral.

A pequena casa criada por Aníbal, com a fachada de madeira, a placa do Papermau e a inscrição “Maquetas de Papel de Todo el Mundo”, simboliza de forma muito generosa aquilo que sempre tentei fazer aqui desde 2011: manter um espaço simples, aberto e acolhedor para todos que gostam de papel, miniaturas, dioramas, arquitetura e criatividade.

Não sou muito bom com grandes declarações emocionadas, mas preciso dizer que fiquei realmente agradecido pela lembrança e pela homenagem. É muito gratificante perceber que um blog feito de maneira simples, quase artesanal, acabou se tornando parte da trajetória de outras pessoas dentro desse pequeno grande mundo dos papercrafts.

Por isso, deixo aqui meu abraço a Aníbal e Mónica e meus votos de muito sucesso nessa nova fase do Edificios de Papel.

Haus Stoll - A Historical German House Papercraft in 1/220 Scale by Frank Stoll

Created by Swiss designer and model maker Frank Stoll, from the website F-ES-B, and fitting on just a single printed sheet, this is a 1/220 scale paper model of the charming Haus Stoll, a historic building located in Bensheim, in the Bergstrasse region of Hesse, Germany. 

The original structure dates back to 1877 and received a decorative Sgraffito-style façade in 1911, designed by Joseph Stoll, son of the owner at the time. Since then, the building has undergone several restorations while maintaining its unique architectural features. 

The paper model can be assembled in two different versions: the original 1877 version or the 1911 version with the elegant Sgraffito façade. 

In addition to offering the templates for free, Mr. Stoll also kindly created a detailed video tutorial showing the assembly process, broken down into easy-to-follow steps and filled with helpful tips to make construction easier. 

Due to the complexity of the model, Mr. Stoll recommends it for ages 14 and up, and it is important to follow all safety instructions during the assembly. 

Mr. Frank Stoll is a Swiss modeler who appears to have a background in architecture or engineering, although he doesn’t state this explicitly on his site. 

He is the creator of F-ES-B, which stands for Frank's Engineering Structures - Buildings, a website primarily dedicated to architectural paper models, with a special focus on historic buildings and European railway structures such as stations, footbridges, signal boxes (stellwerk), and depots. 

Mr. Stoll's modeling style is precise and functional, with technical detailing well suited for railway dioramas. His models all come with clear, straightforward instructions. The textures are typically realistic, with carefully drawn bricks, wood, rooftops, and metal structures. 

These are not “fun” or cartoonish models, they are intended for serious modelers, particularly those interested in railroads. His work is highly regarded among hobbyists of railway modeling, diorama building, and miniature architecture, especially in Europe. 

A curious detail about this papercraft is that the real-life building is actually named Haus Stoll, and it was decorated in 1911 by Joseph Stoll, the original owner’s son. Although Frank Stoll doesn’t publicly state any family connection, the attention to detail and his involvement with the building’s history suggest that there might indeed be a personal, or even genealogical, link to the original Stoll family.

Uma curiosidade sobre este papercraft é que a casa real chama-se Haus Stoll, e foi decorada em 1911 por Joseph Stoll, filho do proprietário original. Embora o designer Frank Stoll não declare publicamente nenhuma ligação familiar, o cuidado com os detalhes e o envolvimento com a história da construção sugerem que talvez exista, sim, uma conexão afetiva, ou até genealógica, com a antiga família proprietária.

Old Schwelm Brewery Complex Paper Model Diorama In 1/220 Scale by Papierdenkmal

Created by the talented German designer and modeler Jens Neuhaus, from Papierdenkmal website and made up of 170 pieces organized on fourteen sheets of paper, this is the 1/220 scale (Z scale) paper model of the former Schwelm Brewery.

Just a few decades ago, the bitter smell of malt and hops was a typical feature of Schwelm's city center. 

From the brewery premises in Neumarkt, the characteristic smell spread across the pedestrian zone and announced fresh Pils, Alt or Amber. 

The Westphalian district town was nationally known for its beer specialties and had a brewing tradition since 1830. 

However, ownership changes in the company and market concentration processes initially led to bankruptcy in 2011 and a year later to the partial demolition of the building. Only the brick building remains as a reminder of the company today. 

Although a new, modern town hall has been built on the site, many Schwelmers still look back with sadness on the loss of the former model company. 

This model was originally published in June 2022, on the tenth anniversary of the partial demolition of the Schwelm brewery.

Criado pelo talentoso designer e modelista alemão Jens Neuhaus, do site Papierdenkmal e composta de 170 peças organizadas em quatorze folhas de papel, este é o modelo de papel na escala 1/220 (escala Z) da antiga Cervejaria Schwelm. 

Há apenas algumas décadas atrás, o cheiro amargo do malte e do lúpulo era uma característica típica do centro da cidade de Schwelm. 

Das instalações da cervejaria em Neumarkt, o cheiro característico espalhava-se pela zona pedonal e anunciava Pils, Alt ou Amber frescos.

A cidade distrital da Vestfália era conhecida nacionalmente por suas especialidades cervejeiras e tinha uma tradição cervejeira desde 1830. 

No entanto, mudanças de propriedade na empresa e processos de concentração no mercado levaram inicialmente à falência em 2011 e um ano depois à demolição parcial do edifício. Apenas o edifício de tijolos permanece como uma lembrança da empresa hoje. 

Embora uma nova e moderna prefeitura tenha sido construída no local, muitos Schwelmers ainda olham com tristeza para a perda da antiga empresa modelo. 

Este modelo foi originalmente publicado em junho de 2022, no décimo aniversário da demolição parcial da cervejaria Schwelm.
