This curious papercraft represents a honey bee at a scale approximately ten times larger than the real insect. Despite its rather impressive size when finished, the entire model is made up of only nine pieces, all arranged on a single sheet of paper. The textures were created using real images, giving the body, wings and legs a much more convincing appearance than we usually find in such simple models.
The pieces form the head, thorax, abdomen, wings, antennae, legs, internal structure and stinger. The body is assembled from three rounded sections, while all six legs are combined into a single foldable piece. This clever solution greatly reduces the number of separate parts, although assembling the legs and some of the smaller tabs will require a little patience, a good pair of scissors and perhaps the help of tweezers.
The most amusing detail is that this is not merely a static model. The papercraft includes a very simple mechanism that makes the stinger move in and out of the end of the abdomen when the head of the bee is pressed. It is a small piece of paper engineering that makes the model especially interesting for children, school displays or anyone who enjoys papercrafts with moving parts.
The wings can also be attached at different angles, allowing the modeler to build the bee with its wings fully open or in a more closed position. Once the model is complete, the position of the legs, antennae and wings can be carefully adjusted with the fingers, giving the insect a more natural and dynamic appearance.
Although all the original written explanations are in Japanese, this should not discourage anyone. The assembly page is practically a complete photographic tutorial, showing everything from cutting out the pieces to joining the head, thorax and abdomen, attaching the legs, antennae and wings and installing the moving stinger mechanism.
The photographs are large, clear and show every stage of the assembly process in considerable detail. There is also a video tutorial on YouTube that follows the entire construction. This means that it is perfectly possible to build the bee without understanding a single word of Japanese. Depending on the browser settings, the text on the website may also appear automatically translated into English or another language.
As for the type of bee represented by the model, the page simply calls it a mitsubachi, a Japanese word meaning honey bee. However, judging by the shape of the body, the presence of the stinger and the background of the company offering the model, it most likely represents a worker bee of the species Apis mellifera, commonly known as the western honey bee or European honey bee.
It does not appear to represent a queen or a drone. The body, head and abdomen have the typical proportions of a worker, which is also the kind of bee we usually see visiting flowers, collecting nectar and pollen and helping to protect the hive. The template does not officially provide the scientific name of the species, however, so this identification should be understood as the most likely possibility.
The model is offered for free by Suzuki Apiary Hachimitsuya, a traditional beekeeping company located in Suzaka, in the Japanese prefecture of Nagano. Founded in 1923, the company has been working with beekeeping and honey production for more than a century.
The website is not devoted exclusively to papercrafts. It contains information about beekeeping, honey, recipes, bee related products, galleries, contests and other educational activities connected with these small but extremely important insects. The template of this bee was originally printed on the back of leaflets included with the company’s products, but fortunately it was also made available as a free download.

From the Pokémon universe, here is Chikorita in a cute and easy-to-build free paper toy version created by the Japanese designer Ten Pepakura. Offered as a printable papercraft template on the author’s official blog, this model is compact, charming and perfect for Pokémon fans, beginners in papercraft or anyone looking for a quick and relaxing project to build in just one evening.
Chikorita is one of the starter Pokémon from Pokémon Gold and Silver, released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1999. Unlike Pikachu’s electric personality, Chikorita belongs to the Grass type and became known for its calm and friendly appearance, especially because of the large green leaf on top of its head, one of the character’s most recognizable visual elements. Over the years, Chikorita gained a loyal fan base thanks to the anime series and its many appearances in Pokémon games and spin-offs.
