Rediscovered After 25 Years - SBB Re 460 Locomotive Papercraft by Märklin

This papercraft represents the Swiss electric locomotive SBB Re 460 017-7 and was originally made available on the internet many years ago, around 2001. The old download address no longer works and, as far as I could verify, the model is no longer officially available.

Fortunately, I had saved the file on an old rewritable CD together with many other papercrafts from that period. I recently found the CD again, recovered the model, organized the sheet into a PDF file and decided to make it available here on the blog, with an easy and safe download directly from Google Drive.

The sheet identifies the model as an SBB Class 460 electric locomotive, also called the Re 4/4 2000, produced by ABB and SLM for the Swiss Federal Railways. The template also carries the identification Re 460 017-7 and credits Perceptions, with the date March 1995.

This papercraft is part of a huge collection of old models that I have been gathering and preserving for many years. Many of them have not yet appeared on Papermau because they have no photographs of the assembled model, explanatory drawings or any other reference showing clearly what the finished result should look like after the parts are cut and glued.

I have always believed that every post should include at least one reference image, whether it is a photograph of the physical model, an illustration, a drawing or a virtual 3D assembly. Publishing only the template sheets without showing what they represent has always bothered me. Besides giving the impression that I am simply filling the blog with new posts, it could turn Papermau into a random file repository, and that has never been the purpose of the blog.

Those who regularly visit Papermau have already seen many images of my own papercrafts and models created by hobbyists from all over the world assembled virtually in 3D. For many years I did this kind of work in SketchUp, creating a three dimensional representation from the original templates. The results can be very convincing, but the process takes time and becomes almost impossible when the papercraft has many small parts, curved pieces or complicated details.

This is where images generated with artificial intelligence became a very useful tool. They are not absolutely perfect copies of how the physical model will look when assembled, but they can come very close when we provide good references, explain the position of the parts correctly and carefully fix the mistakes that appear during the process.

This locomotive is only being published today because I was able to generate a reasonably coherent image of how the papercraft might look after being cut out and physically assembled. Several attempts and corrections were necessary, especially to reproduce the large side illustration correctly, showing a fireman shoveling coal into a furnace.

I know that many modelers are still suspicious of artificial intelligence, but I believe it will become an increasingly common part of our daily lives. It is up to us to use it as a tool, preserving the original work and placing technology at the service of our own creative interests.

The real locomotive belongs to the famous Swiss Re 460 series, developed for the Lok 2000 railway project. The decoration of this particular model creates an unusual contrast by placing a scene inspired by the interior of an old steam locomotive on the body of a modern electric locomotive.

Märklin, which originally offered this papercraft on its old website, is a traditional German manufacturer of model trains and one of the best known brands in the model railway world. Its connection with the model also explains the familiar red logo printed on the front and sides of the locomotive.

Por sorte, eu havia guardado o arquivo em um velho CD regravável junto com muitos outros papercrafts daquela época. Recentemente encontrei esse CD novamente, recuperei o modelo, organizei a folha em um arquivo PDF e resolvi disponibilizá-lo aqui no blog, com download fácil e seguro diretamente pelo Google Drive.

A própria folha identifica o modelo como uma locomotiva elétrica SBB Class 460, também chamada Re 4/4 2000, produzida pela ABB e pela SLM para as Ferrovias Federais Suíças. O template também traz a identificação Re 460 017-7 e os créditos da Perceptions, com a data de março de 1995.

Este papercraft faz parte de uma enorme coleção de modelos antigos que venho reunindo e preservando há muitos anos. Muitos deles ainda não apareceram no Papermau porque não possuem fotografias do modelo montado, desenhos explicativos ou qualquer outra referência que mostre claramente qual será o resultado depois que as peças forem recortadas e coladas.

Sempre achei importante incluir ao menos uma imagem de referência em cada postagem, seja uma fotografia do modelo físico, uma ilustração, um desenho ou uma montagem virtual em 3D. Publicar apenas as folhas de peças, sem mostrar o que elas representam, sempre me incomodou. Além de parecer que estou apenas inflando o blog com novas postagens, isso poderia transformar o Papermau em um simples repositório aleatório de arquivos, e nunca foi essa a proposta do blog.

Quem acompanha o Papermau já viu muitas imagens de papercrafts meus e de modelistas de várias partes do mundo montados virtualmente em 3D. Durante muitos anos fiz esse tipo de trabalho no SketchUp, criando uma representação tridimensional a partir dos templates. O resultado pode ficar bastante convincente, mas o processo exige tempo e se torna praticamente impossível quando o papercraft possui muitas peças pequenas, curvas ou detalhes complicados.

Foi nesse ponto que as imagens geradas por inteligência artificial se tornaram uma ferramenta muito útil. Elas não são cópias absolutamente perfeitas de como o modelo físico ficará depois de montado, mas podem chegar bastante perto quando fornecemos boas referências, explicamos corretamente a posição das peças e corrigimos os erros que aparecem durante o processo.

Esta locomotiva só está sendo publicada hoje porque consegui gerar uma imagem minimamente coerente de como o papercraft poderá ficar depois de recortado e montado. Foram necessárias várias tentativas e correções, especialmente para manter corretamente a grande ilustração lateral que mostra um foguista alimentando uma fornalha com carvão.

Sei que muitos modelistas ainda torcem o nariz para a inteligência artificial, mas acredito que ela fará cada vez mais parte do nosso cotidiano. Cabe a nós utilizá-la como ferramenta, preservando o trabalho original e colocando a tecnologia a serviço de nossos interesses criativos.

A locomotiva real pertence à famosa série suíça Re 460, desenvolvida para o projeto ferroviário Lok 2000. A decoração deste modelo cria um contraste curioso ao colocar, sobre uma moderna locomotiva elétrica, uma cena inspirada no interior de uma antiga locomotiva a vapor.

A Märklin, responsável por oferecer este papercraft em seu antigo site, é uma tradicional fabricante alemã de trens em miniatura e uma das marcas mais conhecidas do ferromodelismo mundial. Sua presença no modelo também explica o conhecido logotipo vermelho aplicado na frente e nas laterais da locomotiva.

Macintosh SE/30 Retro Computer Miniature Papercraft by Beginner’s Mac

This papercraft represents the Macintosh SE/30, accompanied by its keyboard and the small mouse commonly used with Apple computers of that period. The entire model fits on a single sheet and, despite its relatively simple construction, it reproduces the compact and instantly recognizable shape of the original machine very well. The front features the screen, floppy disk drive and ventilation grilles, while the sides and rear complete the miniature with several printed details. Once assembled, the set is small and very charming, making it suitable both as a collectible and as a decorative piece for a desk or shelf.

I had kept this model for many years as a PDF file stored on an old flash drive, together with dozens of other papercrafts that I found and preserved over time. However, the file did not contain clear information about its origin. For a long time, all I knew was that it was an old Japanese papercraft inspired by the Macintosh SE/30.

The main clue appeared in a small, low-quality photograph showing the model sheet still attached to the pages of a Japanese magazine. The image appears in Google search results, but the address indicated by the search engine is now dead and no longer leads to the original page. At the top of the photograph, it was possible to make out the title Mac Paper Craft Collection and, just below it, the identification Macintosh SE/30 – 1989. That image became the starting point for a small investigation into the model’s true origin.

After searching through old references, comparing titles and consulting preserved Japanese webpages, I was able to discover that the papercraft had originally been published in the magazine Beginner’s Mac. As its name suggests, the magazine was mainly aimed at people who were beginning to use Macintosh computers. The SE/30 was apparently presented as the first model in a series dedicated to different Apple computers and devices.

Beginner’s Mac ceased publication in 1997 and was eventually incorporated into the Japanese edition of MacUser. Some time later, the papercrafts from the collection were made available online through a Japanese ZDNet page called MAC Paper Craft Collection.

Unfortunately, that address disappeared many years ago. Records of the page can still be found through the Wayback Machine, but the archived copy is incomplete and the download links no longer work. This is a common problem with old websites: sometimes the main page is preserved, while its images, PDF files and secondary pages are not archived.

The real computer that inspired this model, the Macintosh SE/30, was released by Apple in 1989. It belonged to the well-known family of compact Macintosh computers, which combined the computer and monitor inside a single vertical case. Although visually similar to earlier models, it featured more advanced internal components and offered considerably better performance for its time. For this reason, the SE/30 is often remembered as one of the most powerful compact Macintosh computers and remains highly desirable among collectors.

It had a monochrome screen, used floppy disks and featured a separately connected keyboard and mouse. Today, its beige case, small square screen and simple lines have become symbols of personal computing from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Since I still had an intact copy of the PDF stored on that old flash drive, I decided to host it on my Google Drive and share it once again here on the blog. In this way, this small papercraft can remain available to collectors, modelers and admirers of vintage Macintosh computers, even after the disappearance of its original webpage.

O modelo ocupa apenas uma folha e, apesar de sua construção relativamente simples, reproduz muito bem o formato compacto e imediatamente reconhecível da máquina original. A parte frontal traz a tela, a unidade de disquete e as grades de ventilação, enquanto as laterais e a parte traseira completam a miniatura com vários detalhes impressos. Depois de montado, o conjunto fica pequeno e muito simpático, funcionando tanto como peça de coleção quanto como decoração para uma mesa ou estante.

Eu tinha esse modelo guardado havia muitos anos em formato PDF, salvo em um velho pendrive junto com dezenas de outros papercrafts que fui encontrando e preservando ao longo do tempo. No entanto, o arquivo não trazia informações claras sobre sua origem. Durante bastante tempo, tudo o que eu sabia era que se tratava de um antigo papercraft japonês inspirado no Macintosh SE/30.

A principal pista apareceu em uma pequena fotografia de baixa qualidade, mostrando a folha do modelo ainda presa a uma revista japonesa. A imagem aparece nos resultados da busca do Google, mas o endereço indicado pelo mecanismo de pesquisa já está morto e não leva mais à página original. No alto da fotografia era possível distinguir o título Mac Paper Craft Collection e, logo abaixo, a identificação Macintosh SE/30 – 1989. A partir dessa imagem começou uma pequena investigação para descobrir de onde o modelo realmente havia vindo.

Depois de procurar referências antigas, comparar títulos e consultar páginas japonesas preservadas, consegui descobrir que o papercraft havia sido publicado originalmente na revista Beginner’s Mac. Como o próprio nome sugere, ela era voltada principalmente para usuários iniciantes de computadores Macintosh. O SE/30 aparentemente foi apresentado como o primeiro modelo de uma série dedicada a diferentes computadores e equipamentos da Apple.

A revista Beginner’s Mac deixou de ser publicada em 1997 e acabou sendo incorporada à edição japonesa da MacUser. Algum tempo depois, os papercrafts da coleção foram disponibilizados na internet por meio de uma página da ZDNet japonesa chamada MAC Paper Craft Collection.

Infelizmente, esse endereço desapareceu há muitos anos. Ainda é possível encontrar registros da página no Wayback Machine, mas a cópia arquivada está incompleta e os links de download não funcionam. Esse é um problema comum em sites antigos: às vezes a página principal é preservada, mas as imagens, arquivos PDF e páginas secundárias acabam não sendo salvos.

O computador que inspirou este modelo, o Macintosh SE/30, foi lançado pela Apple em 1989. Ele pertencia à conhecida família dos Macintosh compactos, que reunia o computador e o monitor em um único gabinete vertical. Visualmente, era parecido com modelos anteriores, mas trazia componentes internos mais avançados e um desempenho bastante superior para a época. Por isso, o SE/30 é frequentemente lembrado como um dos Macintosh compactos mais poderosos e desejados por colecionadores.

Sua tela era monocromática, o sistema utilizava disquetes e o teclado e o mouse eram conectados separadamente. Hoje, seu gabinete bege, a pequena tela quadrada e suas linhas simples se tornaram símbolos da informática do final dos anos 1980 e do início dos anos 1990.

Como eu ainda tinha uma cópia intacta do PDF guardada naquele velho pendrive, decidi hospedá-la em meu Google Drive e compartilhá-la novamente aqui no blog. Assim, este pequeno papercraft poderá continuar disponível para colecionadores, modelistas e admiradores dos antigos computadores Macintosh, mesmo depois do desaparecimento da página original.

Space Dock Complex - A Modular Sci-Fi Building Papercraft by Papermau - Work in Progress

This is the Space Dock Complex, my newest original Papermau project and also one of the most modular models I have created so far.

The model represents a futuristic building with four docking bays or garages designed for small spacecraft, flying vehicles or any other type of machine you may want to place inside.

The Space Dock can be assembled as a single ground-level building or transformed into a multi-story complex simply by stacking identical modules. Each floor can also be used separately, allowing you to create small garages, hangars, workshops or outposts for science-fiction dioramas.

Another possibility is to build the model with or without the interiors of the docking bays. In the complete version, each garage will include internal walls, crew access doors and enough space to accommodate small spacecraft or futuristic vehicles.

At the rear of the building are the individual access doors, external walkways and an elevator tower connecting the different floors. At the front, the large platforms can be used as landing, parking and vehicle movement areas.

The images show a beta version created in SketchUp. I am still working on a few details, especially the supports for the front platforms, the organization of the parts and the final adjustments required before the test build.

If everything goes as planned, the Space Dock Complex will be published here at Papermau next week.

O modelo representa um edifício futurista com quatro docas ou garagens destinadas a pequenas naves espaciais, veículos voadores ou qualquer outro tipo de máquina que você queira colocar em seu interior.

O Space Dock poderá ser montado como uma construção térrea independente ou transformado em um edifício de vários andares, simplesmente empilhando módulos iguais. Cada andar também poderá ser usado separadamente, permitindo criar pequenas garagens, hangares, oficinas ou postos avançados para dioramas de ficção científica.

Outra possibilidade será montar o modelo com ou sem o interior das docas. Na versão completa, cada garagem terá paredes internas, portas de acesso para a tripulação e espaço para acomodar pequenas naves ou veículos futuristas.

Na parte traseira do edifício estão as portas individuais de acesso, as passarelas externas e uma torre de elevador que conecta os diferentes andares. Na parte frontal, grandes plataformas servem como áreas de pouso, estacionamento e movimentação dos veículos.

As imagens mostram uma versão beta criada no SketchUp. Ainda estou trabalhando em alguns detalhes, principalmente nos suportes das plataformas frontais, na organização das peças e nos últimos ajustes necessários antes da montagem de teste.

The Ephemeral Museum - Hot Wheels Garages and Scenery Assembled and Adapted by Raymond J. Usher

One of the most rewarding parts of maintaining Papermau is receiving messages from people in many different parts of the world showing how they use and adapt the models published on the blog. This time, The Ephemeral Museum welcomes Raymond J. Usher, a Hot Wheels collector and the person behind the Instagram profile @hotwheels_outside.

Raymond found Papermau through a Google search while looking for scenery for his collection. Shortly afterward, he kindly sent me several photographs by email showing buildings he had assembled to create garages, workshops and small streets for his cars.

All the photographs in this post were taken by Raymond, and all the models shown in them were assembled and adapted by him. After receiving the pictures, I asked for his permission to publish them in The Ephemeral Museum and invited him to write a few words about his collection and how he discovered papercraft. Raymond kindly agreed and prepared the account below especially for this post.

One particularly interesting feature of his builds is the method he uses. Raymond glues the printed sheets onto cardboard taken from boxes, removes the traditional glue tabs and joins the structures with hot glue. This makes the buildings stronger and more resistant, which is especially useful for scenery that will be moved, stored and used repeatedly for play and photography.

I always encourage this kind of adaptation. Paper models do not have to be assembled in exactly the same way by everyone. Papercraft is an especially good hobby for creative people who enjoy experimenting and finding their own solutions. Parts can be reinforced, doors and windows can be modified, buildings can be combined, bases can be added and different assembly methods can be used. Most of the time, these changes are simple and require practically no additional expense, since they can be made with materials already available at home.

Raymond achieved excellent results. The weathered textures, old automotive advertisements and miniature cars create scenes full of personality. The buildings work perfectly as neighborhood garages and workshops, while the visible cardboard along some of the edges adds to the handmade character of the models.

Below, in Raymond’s own words, is the story of how it all began:

“I started the Instagram channel during the children’s school holiday as a way to get them playing outside instead of being stuck on their tablets all the time.

We started by simply taking the Hot Wheels cars and track outside because it was sunny. At that point, most of our collection consisted of hand-me-down cars and the occasional one bought over the years. But I soon realized that there was a whole world of cars to collect.

I ended up picking up random cars that caught my eye while grocery shopping and then discovered the Fast and Furious cars, which I have been collecting lately. We use a mixture of Hot Wheels track and plastic guttering for the racetrack. The guttering is wide enough for racing several cars at the same time, and it is also cheap.

Then I started looking for ways to make the track look a little better while staying on a budget, and that was when I came across papercraft. At the moment, I am building up my collection of paper buildings to use as scenery.”

What began as a way to encourage the children to play outdoors eventually brought together collecting, creativity, model building and photography. The use of plastic guttering as racetracks and cardboard from boxes to reinforce the models shows how simple ideas and inexpensive materials can produce original and enjoyable results.

Uma característica interessante de suas montagens é o método utilizado. Raymond cola as folhas impressas sobre papelão reaproveitado de caixas, elimina as abas tradicionais dos modelos e monta as estruturas com cola quente. Assim, as construções ficam mais firmes e resistentes, algo bastante útil para cenários que serão movimentados, guardados e usados em diferentes brincadeiras e fotografias.

Eu sempre incentivo esse tipo de adaptação. Os modelos de papel não precisam ser montados exatamente da mesma maneira por todas as pessoas. O papercraft é um hobby especialmente interessante para quem gosta de criar, experimentar e encontrar soluções próprias. É possível reforçar peças, modificar portas e janelas, combinar construções, acrescentar bases ou alterar o método de montagem. Na maioria das vezes, essas mudanças podem ser feitas de forma simples e praticamente sem custos adicionais, utilizando materiais que já temos em casa.

O resultado de Raymond ficou excelente. As texturas envelhecidas, os antigos anúncios automotivos e os carrinhos formam cenas cheias de personalidade. As construções funcionam muito bem como oficinas e garagens de bairro, e o papelão aparente em algumas bordas reforça o caráter artesanal das maquetes.

A seguir, nas palavras do próprio Raymond, está a história de como tudo começou:

“Comecei o perfil no Instagram durante as férias escolares das crianças, como uma maneira de fazê-las brincar ao ar livre, em vez de ficarem o tempo todo presas aos tablets.

No início, simplesmente levávamos os carrinhos e as pistas Hot Wheels para fora porque o tempo estava ensolarado. Naquela época, a maior parte de nossa coleção era formada por carrinhos usados que havíamos recebido de outras pessoas e por alguns poucos comprados ao longo dos anos. Logo percebi, porém, que existia todo um mundo de carros para colecionar.

Comecei a comprar modelos que chamavam minha atenção enquanto fazia compras e depois descobri os carros da série Velozes e Furiosos, que tenho colecionado mais recentemente. Utilizamos uma combinação de pistas Hot Wheels e calhas plásticas para criar os circuitos. As calhas são largas o suficiente para permitir que vários carros corram ao mesmo tempo e, além disso, são baratas.

Depois comecei a procurar maneiras de deixar as pistas mais interessantes sem gastar muito e foi assim que descobri o papercraft. Agora estou aumentando minha coleção de construções de papel para utilizar nos cenários.”

O que começou como uma maneira de incentivar as crianças a brincar fora de casa acabou reunindo colecionismo, criatividade, construção de maquetes e fotografia. O uso de calhas plásticas como pistas e de papelão de caixas para reforçar os modelos mostra como ideias simples e materiais acessíveis podem produzir resultados divertidos e originais.

About the Ephemeral Museum:

I have been involved in paper modeling since 2005, although I had my first contact with paper models back in my childhood in the 1970s, through magazines that were sold sporadically at newsstands. I remember publications with houses to build and dioramas or playsets of airports, western forts, nativity scenes and similar themes.

With the advent of the internet, what happened was simply a revival of the papercraft hobby for me and for many other people of my generation. Today I am opening a new section here on the blog, The Ephemeral Museum, which is a place where I will show some of the models I have built over all these years.

Eu estou no papelmodelismo desde 2005, embora já tivesse tido contato com modelos de papel na minha infância, nos anos 1970, por meio de revistas que eram vendidas esporadicamente em bancas de jornal. Lembro de publicações com casas para montar e dioramas ou playsets de aeroportos, fortes de velho oeste, presépios e temas semelhantes.

Com o advento da internet, o que houve foi simplesmente um renascimento do hobby do papelmodelismo para mim e para muitas outras pessoas da minha geração. Hoje eu estou abrindo uma nova seção aqui no blog, o The Ephemeral Museum, que é um espaço onde irei mostrar alguns dos modelos que construí ao longo de todos esses anos.

Também gostaria que este fosse um espaço onde outros modelistas pudessem mostrar seus trabalhos, sendo assim, se alguém quiser participar deste museu, basta enviar fotos do seu trabalho e algumas palavras, se quiser, para o e-mail abaixo:

Little Suburban House - One-Sheet Papercraft - by Papermau Download Now!

This is the Little Suburban House, the new original Papermau papercraft that fits on just one sheet of paper. The model represents a simple home with light-colored walls, a red roof, a side garage, a small walled yard and a base featuring grassy areas and paved walkways.

Although it occupies only one sheet, I tried to include enough details to turn the house into a small complete scene. It can be displayed on its own, combined with other architectural models or used as part of dioramas, model railways, tabletop games and urban or suburban scenes.

A special detail of this model is the small utility installation located next to the garage, consisting of an electric meter box, a water meter and an electricity service pole. This is a very common arrangement in Brazilian houses. The electric meter box is normally placed above the water meter, a configuration that is practically standard throughout the country.

The main variation from one region to another is usually the pole itself. In some places it is made of metal, while in others it is made of reinforced concrete. I do not remember having included this complete combination of electric meter box, water meter and pole in any of my previous papercrafts. It is a small detail, but it gives the model a typically Brazilian appearance and makes the scene a little more interesting and recognizable.

Assembly is very simple. All the parts are numbered, and the system works in the most straightforward way possible: areas marked with matching numbers must be connected. The area marked with number 1 should be glued to the other area marked with number 1, the part marked with number 2 connects to the area marked with number 2, and so on.

Since the entire model fits on a single sheet, it does not require much paper or ink and can be assembled in a relatively short time. For a sturdier result, I recommend printing it on paper weighing between 160 and 200 g/m². The final scale will depend on the printing settings, so the model can also be reduced or enlarged to suit different projects.

Essa é a Pequena Casa Suburbana, o novo papercraft original Papermau em apenas uma folha de papel. O modelo representa uma residência simples, com paredes claras, telhado vermelho, garagem lateral, um pequeno quintal murado e uma base com áreas de grama e caminhos pavimentados.

Apesar de ocupar somente uma folha, procurei incluir detalhes suficientes para transformar a casa em um pequeno cenário completo. Ela pode ser usada sozinha, combinada com outros modelos arquitetônicos ou como parte de dioramas, ferromodelismo, jogos de mesa e cenas urbanas ou suburbanas.

Um detalhe especial deste modelo é o conjunto instalado próximo à garagem, formado por uma caixa de medidor de energia elétrica, um hidrômetro de água e um poste de entrada de energia. Esse é um padrão muito comum nas casas brasileiras. Normalmente, a caixa do medidor de eletricidade fica na parte superior e o hidrômetro na parte inferior, uma disposição que é praticamente padrão em todo o país.

A principal variação encontrada de uma região para outra costuma estar no poste. Em alguns lugares ele é feito de ferro, enquanto em outros é construído em concreto armado. Não me lembro de ter incluído anteriormente em um dos meus papercrafts esse conjunto completo com caixa de energia, hidrômetro e poste. É um detalhe pequeno, mas que ajuda a dar ao modelo uma aparência tipicamente brasileira e torna a cena um pouco mais interessante e reconhecível.

A montagem é bastante simples. Todas as peças possuem números, e o sistema funciona da maneira mais direta possível: partes marcadas com números iguais devem ser conectadas. Assim, a área com o número 1 deve ser colada na outra área também marcada com o número 1, a peça com o número 2 se conecta à área com o número 2, e assim por diante.

Como todo o modelo cabe em apenas uma folha, ele não exige muito papel ou tinta e pode ser montado em pouco tempo. Para obter uma estrutura mais firme, recomendo a impressão em papel com gramatura entre 160 e 200 g/m². A escala final dependerá das configurações de impressão, permitindo que o modelo seja reduzido ou ampliado para diferentes projetos.
