1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Snowcat Papercraft Revisited - A Tracked VW Bus In 1/35 Scale - by Paper Diorama

This curious 1/35 scale Volkswagen Type 2 Snowcat is a creation of the Italian website Paper Diorama and is one of those models that combines two things most people would never imagine together: the classic body of a Volkswagen Bus and a complete set of snow tracks.

The papercraft occupies three printed sheets. The first two are dedicated to the vehicle itself, including the bodywork, chassis, wheels and the large side tracks. The third sheet contains an optional display stand, very simple to assemble, featuring a snowy landscape backdrop and enough room to showcase the finished model. Those who wish to save paper can build only the vehicle, but the small stand certainly adds a nice touch to the presentation.

Despite its unusual appearance, the model does not seem overly complicated to build. The body retains the instantly recognizable shape of the classic Volkswagen Bus, while the lower section is formed by the tracked system. Judging by the photos of the completed model, the final result is quite striking, especially thanks to the contrast between the bright yellow body, the colorful graphics on the sides and the large dark tracks.

And if you think this strange Volkswagen came solely from the imagination of the designers at Paper Diorama, the story becomes even more interesting: the vehicle actually existed.

The machine was used by ÖAMTC, the Austrian automobile association, and combined the body of a 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Panel Van with the chassis of a 1960 Bombardier snowcat. In place of conventional wheels were wide snow tracks powered by a Ford Taunus V4 engine. The result was a kind of tracked Volkswagen Bus capable of traveling across snowy terrain.

But the most curious feature was hidden in the roof. The vehicle was part of an ÖAMTC campaign aimed at younger drivers and was transformed into a kind of mobile disco. It featured a DJ booth that could be raised through the roof, along with a complete sound system. In other words, someone apparently decided that a Volkswagen Bus riding on snow tracks was still not unusual enough and added a DJ booth to it.

This papercraft first appeared here on Papermau in July of 2014. More than twelve years have passed since that original post and, considering that roughly 15,000 posts have been published on the blog since then, I thought this small and unusual Volkswagen deserved another chance to return to the front page. Many current visitors have probably never seen it before, and even some longtime readers may have forgotten about it.

It is also exactly the kind of model I enjoy finding: not only a beautiful and unusual vehicle to build in paper, but a reproduction of a real machine with such an extraordinary story that it almost seems fictional.

Este curioso Volkswagen Type 2 Snowcat em escala 1/35 é uma criação do site italiano Paper Diorama e é daqueles modelos que misturam duas coisas que normalmente não imaginaríamos juntas: a clássica carroceria de uma Kombi Volkswagen e um conjunto completo de esteiras para neve.

O papercraft ocupa três folhas impressas. As duas primeiras são dedicadas ao veículo propriamente dito, incluindo a carroceria, o chassi, as rodas e as duas grandes esteiras laterais. A terceira folha traz um expositor opcional, muito simples de montar, com uma paisagem coberta de neve ao fundo e espaço suficiente para acomodar o modelo pronto. Assim, quem quiser economizar papel pode montar somente o veículo, mas o pequeno stand certamente ajuda bastante na apresentação do modelo.

Apesar do aspecto incomum, a montagem não parece excessivamente complicada. A carroceria mantém as formas bastante reconhecíveis da velha Kombi, enquanto a parte inferior é formada pelo conjunto de esteiras. Pelas fotos do modelo pronto dá para perceber que o resultado é muito interessante, especialmente pelo contraste entre o amarelo vivo da carroceria, as ilustrações nas laterais e as grandes esteiras escuras.

E se você está pensando que este estranho Volkswagen saiu apenas da imaginação dos criadores do Paper Diorama, a história fica ainda mais interessante: o veículo realmente existiu.

A máquina foi utilizada pelo ÖAMTC, o clube automobilístico austríaco, e combinava a carroceria de um Volkswagen Type 2 Panel Van de 1966 com o chassi de um snowcat Bombardier de 1960. No lugar das rodas convencionais estavam as largas esteiras, movimentadas por um antigo motor Ford Taunus V4. O resultado era uma espécie de Kombi sobre lagartas, capaz de circular sobre a neve.

Mas a parte mais curiosa ainda estava escondida no teto. O veículo fazia parte de uma iniciativa do ÖAMTC voltada ao público jovem e foi transformado também em uma espécie de discoteca móvel: possuía uma cabine de DJ que podia ser elevada através do teto, além de equipamento de som. Em outras palavras, alguém realmente decidiu que uma Kombi Volkswagen sobre esteiras de neve ainda não era suficientemente extravagante e resolveu colocar uma cabine de DJ nela.

Este papercraft apareceu aqui no Papermau pela primeira vez em julho de 2014. Já se passaram mais de doze anos desde aquela postagem e, considerando que cerca de 15.000 posts foram publicados no blog desde então, achei que este pequeno e estranho Volkswagen merecia voltar à primeira página. Muitos dos leitores atuais provavelmente nunca chegaram a vê-lo e talvez até alguns dos visitantes daquela época já tenham se esquecido dele.

A Seaside Paper Tunnel Book - A Layered Papercraft Diorama by Cabinet of Curiosity Studio

This curious papercraft created by Cabinet of Curiosity Studio is called a Paper Tunnel Book and represents a seaside landscape from South Tyneside, in the northeast of England. Instead of forming a closed structure like most paper models, here several cut-out scenes are positioned one behind the other, separated by two accordion-folded side pieces. When viewed from the front, the different layers create a surprising sense of depth and transform a few simple sheets of paper into a small three-dimensional scene.

The model is composed of five different scenes, which must be cut out and then glued to the folded side sections. One interesting detail is that the builder can decide the distance between the layers and even slightly change their order, altering the perception of depth in the scene. Cabinet of Curiosity Studio recommends using paper or cardstock between 180 and 200 g/m², and the project can be printed in either A4 or A3 format. The instructions available on the website show the entire assembly process step by step.

The tunnel book can also receive an additional background and a front piece with a viewing opening. With this piece in place, the model works like a true paper peepshow: looking through the small opening, the five layers line up and the landscape seems to extend deep into the box. It is a very simple technique, but the visual effect is quite interesting, almost like looking into a tiny theater or miniature diorama. Of course, there is nothing to stop the builder from adding personal details, creating a different frame or even adding new layers to customize the scene.

This model is part of the Wonderbox project, an artistic initiative created to explore stories and landscapes from the South Tyneside region through tunnel books and small paper peep shows. The project received public support for cultural activities, including funding from the British national lottery, as well as support from the local city council. Kentōshi-sen Papercraft - A Tiny Detailed Japanese Historical Ship on One Sheet - by Shukuka1014

This small but surprisingly detailed papercraft reproduces a Kentōshi-sen, a type of ship used by Japan in the old diplomatic missions sent to China during the Tang dynasty (618–907). The model was created by Japanese designer Ara, also known as Shukuka1014.

What immediately catches the eye is how much detail Ara managed to fit into such a small project. The main model fits on just one sheet of A4 paper, but even so it includes the hull, deck, small cabins, masts, rudder, anchor and many tiny structural details.

It is one of those papercrafts that proves how much can be done with a single sheet of paper. The model is small, but it is far from simple. Ara even designed an internal structure to help support the hull and keep everything in the right shape during assembly.

The Kentōshi ships were used during a very distant period of Japanese history, mainly around the Asuka period (592–710), the Nara period (710–794) and the beginning of the Heian period (794–1185), when Japan sent official missions to China to learn more about government, religion, culture, writing, art and technology.

Because these ships existed more than a thousand years ago, there are no completely accurate records showing exactly how every part of them looked. To create his model, Ara used as his main reference the full-size reconstruction of a Kentōshi-sen displayed at Suzaku Gate Square, in the Heijō Palace Historical Park, in Japan.

Another very nice part of this project is that Ara did not simply provide the printable sheet and leave the builder alone. On the same page he created a very detailed photographic step-by-step guide showing almost the entire assembly process, from the internal structure and the hull to the deck, cabins, masts, rudder and the smallest finishing pieces.

So, although the amount of tiny parts may look a little intimidating at first, anyone who wants to build this model should have very few doubts about where everything goes. The photos clearly show the order of construction and make the whole process much easier to understand.

Ara also provides the masts and sails separately, so they can be printed on thinner paper if desired. He also mentions an interesting historical detail: the sails used on ships of this period were not made of canvas like the sails we usually imagine on old Western ships, but from woven plant materials, including bamboo.

The final result is a tiny historical ship full of personality and detail, and a great example of how much can be created from just one sheet of paper, a good design and a little patience.

O que chama a atenção logo de início é a quantidade de detalhes que Ara conseguiu colocar em um projeto tão pequeno. O modelo principal cabe em apenas uma folha de papel A4, mas mesmo assim inclui casco, convés, pequenas construções, mastros, leme, âncora e muitos pequenos detalhes estruturais.

É um daqueles papercrafts que mostram o quanto pode ser feito com uma única folha de papel. O modelo é pequeno, mas está longe de ser simples. Ara criou até uma estrutura interna para ajudar a sustentar o casco e manter tudo na forma correta durante a montagem.

Os navios Kentōshi foram usados durante um período muito antigo da história japonesa, principalmente entre o período Asuka (592–710), o período Nara (710–794) e o início do período Heian (794–1185), quando o Japão enviava missões oficiais à China para aprender mais sobre governo, religião, cultura, escrita, arte e tecnologia.

Na mesma página ele preparou um passo a passo fotográfico muito detalhado mostrando praticamente toda a montagem, desde a estrutura interna e o casco até o convés, as pequenas construções, os mastros, o leme e as menores peças de acabamento.

Por isso, apesar da quantidade de peças pequenas poder assustar um pouco à primeira vista, quem quiser montar o modelo dificilmente ficará com dúvidas sobre onde cada coisa deve ser colocada. As fotos mostram claramente a ordem da construção e tornam todo o processo muito mais fácil de entender.

Ara também disponibiliza separadamente os mastros e as velas, para que possam ser impressos em papel mais fino, caso o modelista prefira. Ele também menciona um detalhe histórico interessante: as velas usadas nos navios desse período não eram feitas de lona como as que normalmente imaginamos nos antigos navios ocidentais, mas de materiais vegetais entrelaçados, incluindo bambu.

O resultado final é um pequeno navio histórico cheio de personalidade e detalhes, e um ótimo exemplo do quanto pode ser criado com apenas uma folha de papel, um bom projeto e um pouco de paciência.

SD Guntank Papercraft - A Tiny One Sheet Gundam Model by Shukuka1014

This nice SD Guntank papercraft was created by Japanese designer and modeler Shukuka1014 and was originally published on his blog in May 2017.

Those who have been following Papermau for some time may already recognize the author's name, since several of his creations have appeared here on the blog over the years. Shukuka1014 has a very eclectic collection of papercrafts, ranging from Japanese historical buildings, temples and shrines to ships, characters and models inspired by popular culture.

This time we have something quite different: a small and very nice version of the Guntank, one of the classic machines from the Mobile Suit Gundam universe. The model follows the SD, or Super Deformed, style, with deliberately exaggerated proportions that give the Guntank a compact, almost toy-like appearance, while preserving its most recognizable features, such as the tracked base, the large cockpit and the two long cannons mounted above the body.

Despite its simplified appearance, this is a cleverly designed little papercraft. The model is assembled from several small sections, and Shukuka1014 provides a useful sequence of photos showing the construction of the cockpit, body, arms, rear exhausts, cannons and tracks until the Guntank is complete.

This Guntank is actually the third and final model of a small SD Gundam V Operation Set created by Shukuka1014. The other two models are the Gundam and Guncannon, also available as free papercrafts on the author's blog. According to Shukuka1014, the models are around 7 cm tall and each one was designed to fit on a single sheet of A4 paper.

Shukuka1014 possui uma coleção bastante eclética de papercrafts, que vai de construções históricas japonesas, templos e santuários a navios, personagens e modelos inspirados na cultura popular.

Desta vez temos algo bem diferente: uma pequena e muito simpática versão do Guntank, uma das máquinas clássicas do universo Mobile Suit Gundam. O modelo segue o estilo SD, ou Super Deformed, com proporções deliberadamente exageradas que dão ao Guntank uma aparência compacta, quase de brinquedo, sem deixar de preservar suas características mais reconhecíveis, como a base com esteiras, o grande cockpit e os dois longos canhões montados sobre o corpo.

Apesar da aparência simplificada, este é um pequeno papercraft muito bem elaborado. O modelo é montado a partir de várias pequenas seções e Shukuka1014 disponibiliza uma útil sequência de fotos mostrando a construção do cockpit, corpo, braços, escapamentos traseiros, canhões e esteiras até chegar ao Guntank completo.

A Fantasy Treehouse Papercraft For Dioramas, RPGs And Wargames by R-N-W & RPG Toons

Here is a very nice Treehouse Papercraft created by Rose, from R-N-W & RPG Toons, a charming little paper model that should be especially interesting for RPG players, wargamers and anyone who enjoys building miniature fantasy or woodland dioramas.

The model represents a rustic wooden treehouse built around a large tree, with small platforms, wooden walls, roofs and a suspended bridge connecting different parts of the structure. The hand-drawn textures and slightly whimsical design give the whole model a pleasant handmade appearance, something that works particularly well with this kind of fantasy scenery.

Although it is presented as a treehouse, the model can easily become part of many different settings. It could be used as a small outpost hidden in a forest, a home for elves or other woodland inhabitants, a lookout post, a refuge for adventurers or simply an unusual building in a fantasy village. With a little imagination, several copies could even be combined to create a small settlement among the trees.

For RPG and tabletop gaming, this kind of model is also useful because it adds some vertical variety to the scenery. Instead of having all the buildings and characters at ground level, the platforms and bridge create different heights and give the scene a more interesting appearance. Of course, it can also simply be built as a small standalone display model.

An interesting detail about this papercraft is how the original idea came about. The creators asked their followers for suggestions, and the winning concept involved houses connected among the treetops. That idea eventually inspired this printable treehouse, which was then made available as a free download.

The papercraft is provided as a PDF file, and the creator indicates that it should be printed at 100% scale. The download is available directly from the original rpgtoons Patreon post.

As with many paper models of this type, there is also plenty of room for personal touches. A builder could add vegetation around the base, small branches, moss, miniature figures, barrels, crates, signs or other accessories. A simple cardboard or foam board base with some grass and stones would already turn it into a complete little diorama.

This is one of those models that does not need to be overly complicated to be interesting. The unusual subject, the hand-drawn textures and the possibility of using it in many different scenes give this Treehouse Papercraft a lot of character.

A very nice little project for a quiet afternoon of paper modeling, and a useful addition to fantasy, RPG and wargame scenery.

Cyber City Modular Sci-Fi Papercraft For Dioramas And Wargames by Black Magic Craft

Cyber City is a very interesting set of printable scenery created by Black Magic Craft for building modular cyberpunk and science-fiction environments, especially designed for tabletop wargames, RPGs, skirmish games and miniature photography.

Rather than being a conventional papercraft made of complete pieces with folding and gluing tabs, Cyber City uses a different and very practical construction system. Most of the printable parts consist of flat walls, roofs, floors and decorative panels intended to be glued onto a stronger material, such as cardboard, cardstock, recycled packaging board or even thin sheets of wood.

This construction method makes a lot of sense considering the main purpose of the set. Wargame scenery is constantly handled, moved around the table, rearranged to create different layouts and stored away after each game, so the structures need to be considerably stronger than an ordinary display papercraft.

The printable sheets include a large variety of industrial and futuristic surfaces and details, such as weathered concrete and metal walls, rusty grilles, ventilation systems, electrical boxes, pipes, doors, graffiti, warning stripes and rooftop equipment, all combining to create a convincing worn industrial and cyberpunk atmosphere.

The modular nature of Cyber City is one of its strongest features. Buildings can be created at different heights, stacked, connected by walkways and arranged in many different ways. With the same collection of pieces you can build a compact industrial complex, several separate city blocks or a much larger urban battlefield, depending on the available space and the number of modules you decide to make.

The photos on this post show one of the possible configurations using Cyber City together with miniatures and give a very good idea of how versatile this type of scenery can be for tabletop games.

Black Magic Craft also published a video showing the construction of the scenery, which is especially useful for understanding how the printable textures and panels are transformed into strong three-dimensional terrain pieces. Cyber City is completely free to download from the Black Magic Craft website. There is, however, one small detail worth mentioning so that nobody is surprised by the download process. Although the model is listed at US$0.00, you need to provide a valid email address and create a free account on the website before downloading the files.

No banking or credit card information is required. I went through the entire process myself and downloaded the files before preparing this post. There were no charges, hidden subscriptions or tricks involved.

If you enjoy building scenery for science-fiction miniatures, cyberpunk dioramas or tabletop games, Cyber City is a particularly useful project because, instead of providing only one finished building, it gives you a collection of modular elements that can be combined and rearranged to create a different city every time.

Cyber City é um conjunto muito interessante de cenários imprimíveis criado pelo Black Magic Craft para a construção de ambientes modulares de ficção científica e estilo cyberpunk, pensado especialmente para wargames de mesa, RPGs, jogos de escaramuça e fotografia de miniaturas.

Em vez de ser um papercraft convencional formado por peças completas com abas para dobrar e colar, Cyber City utiliza um sistema de construção diferente e bastante prático. A maior parte das peças imprimíveis é composta por paredes, telhados, pisos e painéis decorativos planos, pensados para serem colados sobre um material mais resistente, como papelão, papel cartão, papelão reaproveitado de caixas de embalagens ou até mesmo chapas finas de madeira.

Esse método de construção faz bastante sentido quando levamos em conta a principal finalidade do conjunto. Cenários para wargames são constantemente manuseados, movimentados sobre a mesa, reorganizados para criar novas configurações e guardados depois de cada partida, por isso precisam ser consideravelmente mais resistentes do que um papercraft comum feito apenas para exposição.

As folhas imprimíveis incluem uma grande variedade de superfícies e detalhes industriais e futuristas, como paredes de concreto e metal envelhecido, grades enferrujadas, sistemas de ventilação, caixas elétricas, tubulações, portas, grafites, faixas de advertência e equipamentos de cobertura, tudo combinando para criar uma atmosfera industrial desgastada com uma forte aparência cyberpunk.

A natureza modular do Cyber City é um de seus pontos mais interessantes. Os edifícios podem ser construídos em diferentes alturas, empilhados, ligados por passarelas e organizados de muitas maneiras diferentes. Com o mesmo conjunto de peças é possível montar um pequeno complexo industrial, vários quarteirões separados ou um cenário urbano muito maior, dependendo do espaço disponível e da quantidade de módulos que você decidir construir.
