Japanese designer and modeler Propeller Factory is already an old acquaintance here at Papermau. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of featuring several of his creations, especially his charming little aircraft paper models, usually designed in that very particular SD, or "chibi", style that has become something of his trademark.
His models have a personality of their own. Instead of simply trying to reproduce an aircraft as realistically as possible, Propeller Factory manages to capture its essential features and exaggerate its proportions just enough to create something compact, playful and immediately recognizable.
This time, however, he decided to leave the skies for a while and venture onto the water.
This beautiful Harbor Tugboat is particularly interesting because, according to Propeller Factory himself, this is his first attempt at designing and building a boat paper model.
A harbor tugboat is a relatively small but extremely powerful working vessel used to assist much larger ships when maneuvering in ports, docks and other confined areas where large vessels have little room to move.
According to the author, venturing into the construction of a boat was a considerable challenge, precisely because it was so different from the aircraft he usually designs. He also explains that he did not have a three-view drawing of the tugboat, so he developed the model using photographs and side views as references.
Propeller Factory says that he particularly likes the old-fashioned shape and retro feeling of this little tugboat. He also mentions that there are some distortions and small gaps here and there. Curiously, these little imperfections fit the subject very well, helping to give the model the appearance of an old, hard-working tugboat marked by years of service.
The finished model is approximately 155 mm long and requires four sheets of A4 paper, including the display base. In his own build, Propeller Factory also used some additional materials besides paper, such as adhesive tape, cotton swabs and glue for expanded polystyrene.
And perhaps the best way to approach this model is exactly as Propeller Factory himself suggests: enjoy the building process without worrying too much about perfection.
I particularly enjoy seeing a designer venture beyond the kind of subject for which he is best known. After so many little airplanes, this small tugboat shows Propeller Factory's versatility while still retaining the distinctive personality found in his other creations.
And, as I am a great fan of architectural paper models, I keep imagining what an architectural model interpreted through Propeller Factory's very particular style would look like. Seeing the personality he manages to give to his airplanes and now to this beautiful tugboat, I am sure it would be something truly unique, with vivid colors and full of life.

O designer e modelista japonês Propeller Factory já é um velho conhecido aqui no Papermau. Ao longo dos anos tive o prazer de publicar vários de seus trabalhos, principalmente seus simpáticos modelos de aviões, quase sempre criados naquele estilo SD, ou "chibi", muito particular que acabou se tornando uma espécie de marca registrada do autor.
Seus modelos têm personalidade própria. Em vez de simplesmente tentar reproduzir uma aeronave da maneira mais realista possível, Propeller Factory consegue captar suas características essenciais e exagerar as proporções na medida certa, criando modelos compactos, divertidos e imediatamente reconhecíveis.
Desta vez, porém, ele resolveu deixar os céus por um momento e se aventurar pelas águas.
Este belo Harbor Tugboat, ou Rebocador Portuário, é especialmente interessante porque, segundo o próprio Propeller Factory, esta é sua primeira tentativa de projetar e construir um modelo de papel de um barco.
Um rebocador portuário é uma embarcação relativamente pequena, mas extremamente potente, utilizada para auxiliar navios muito maiores em manobras dentro de portos, docas e outros espaços onde grandes embarcações têm pouca margem para se movimentar.
Segundo o próprio autor, aventurar-se na construção de um barco foi um grande desafio, justamente por ser algo bastante diferente dos aviões que costuma projetar. Ele também conta que não dispunha de um desenho de três vistas do rebocador e, por isso, desenvolveu o modelo tomando como referência fotografias e vistas laterais.
Propeller Factory diz gostar especialmente das formas antiquadas e do aspecto retrô do pequeno rebocador. Ele também comenta que existem algumas distorções e pequenas frestas aqui e ali. Curiosamente, essas pequenas imperfeições combinam muito bem com a proposta e ajudam a dar ao modelo a aparência de um velho rebocador de trabalho, marcado por muitos anos de serviço.
O modelo pronto mede aproximadamente 155 mm de comprimento e ocupa quatro folhas de papel A4, incluindo a base de exposição. Em sua própria montagem, Propeller Factory também utilizou alguns materiais além do papel, como fita adesiva, cotonetes e cola para poliestireno expandido.
E talvez a melhor maneira de encarar este modelo seja exatamente aquela sugerida pelo próprio Propeller Factory: aproveitar o processo de construção sem se preocupar demais com a perfeição.
Eu particularmente gosto de ver quando um designer se aventura fora do tipo de modelo pelo qual ficou conhecido. Depois de tantos aviõezinhos, este pequeno rebocador mostra a versatilidade do Propeller Factory e, ao mesmo tempo, consegue manter aquela personalidade tão característica de seus outros trabalhos.
E, como sou um grande fã de modelos de papel de arquitetura, fico imaginando como seria um modelo arquitetônico interpretado através do estilo tão particular do Propeller Factory. Vendo a personalidade que ele consegue imprimir em seus aviões e agora neste belo rebocador, tenho certeza de que seria algo realmente único, com cores vivas e cheio de vida.
