Old Japan In Paper - A Little Japanese Railway Town by Brother Japan Assembled by Yosshii

There is something especially interesting about railway-related papercraft buildings: even relatively simple models can take on a completely different appearance when they are brought together to create a small miniature town.

The models presented in this post are part of the second "Paper Railway Diorama" series offered by Brother Japan, a collection designed in 1/87 scale for HO Narrow layouts and supervised by Tsugawa Yoko, a traditional Japanese manufacturer specialized in miniature railway models.

The collection goes considerably further than just the buildings. Several printable sections can be joined together to form a larger base with an oval railway track, allowing the little town to be arranged around a working miniature railway.

This was not accidental: Brother designed the second series to match HO Narrow railway models running on 9 mm track. The official page even recommends Tsugawa Yoko's compact TU-TMC100 motor unit, which can be used with the small railway vehicles created for this series.

There are also printable backgrounds that completely change the atmosphere of the scene, including a bright blue daytime sky, a warm sunset and a starry night. Together with the base and buildings, they make it possible to create several different settings using essentially paper and a printer.

Among the smaller accessories is a charming little rural station platform, complete with a bench and station sign, a very simple model that fits perfectly with the nostalgic atmosphere of the collection.

The photos illustrating this post come from a series of four articles published by Japanese modeller Yosshii on his Yumeiro Transit Mall blog.

Yosshii is not the creator of these papercrafts. He assembled the Brother models and gave them his own personal touch, showing how these apparently simple paper buildings can gain much more character when displayed together and combined with railway modelling elements.

His builds are particularly interesting because they show the models away from the original promotional images. Old-fashioned shops, small houses and railway-side buildings come together to evoke the atmosphere of a little Japanese town from another time.

It is also a very good example of the potential of papercraft in railway modelling. The models can be built exactly as originally designed or used as a starting point for more elaborate scenes, with added terrain, vegetation, weathering and other small details.

And the best part is that these papercrafts are still available today on the official Brother Japan website.

Há algo especialmente interessante nos papercrafts de construções ligadas ao universo ferroviário: mesmo modelos relativamente simples podem ganhar uma aparência completamente diferente quando são reunidos para formar uma pequena cidade em miniatura.

Os modelos apresentados neste post fazem parte da segunda série "Paper Railway Diorama", oferecida pela Brother Japan, uma coleção criada na escala 1/87 para ferrovias HO Narrow e supervisionada pela Tsugawa Yoko, tradicional fabricante japonesa especializada em miniaturas ferroviárias.

A coleção vai bem além das construções. Várias partes imprimíveis podem ser unidas para formar uma base maior com um circuito oval de trilhos, permitindo que a pequena cidade seja organizada ao redor de uma ferrovia em miniatura funcional.

Isso não foi feito por acaso: a Brother projetou esta segunda série para combinar com modelos HO Narrow que utilizam trilhos de 9 mm. A página oficial chega a recomendar o pequeno mecanismo motorizado TU-TMC100 da Tsugawa Yoko, que também pode ser utilizado com os pequenos veículos ferroviários criados para esta série.

Há também fundos imprimíveis que mudam completamente a atmosfera da cena, incluindo um céu azul durante o dia, um entardecer de cores quentes e uma noite estrelada. Juntamente com a base e as construções, eles permitem criar diferentes ambientações utilizando basicamente papel e uma impressora.

Entre os pequenos acessórios há ainda uma simpática plataforma de uma estação rural, com banco e placa da estação, um modelo muito simples que combina perfeitamente com a atmosfera nostálgica da coleção.

European Bookshop Building Papercraft for Dioramas and Model Railways - by Edificios de Papel

Mónica and Aníbal, from the Spanish website Edificios de Papel, have released another beautiful architectural papercraft, this time representing a tall European-style building with a small shop on the ground floor.

It is the kind of model that can be used in many different ways. It can become part of a French village, an old European street, a model railway layout or even a background building for RPG and wargame tables. By printing and assembling several copies, you can easily create a complete row of houses and shops.

On the sign above the storefront it reads Librairie du Vieux Moulin – Livres Anciens et d’Occasion, which in English means The Old Mill Bookshop – Antique and Second-Hand Books, a small detail that helps give the building the atmosphere of an old French town.

As usual with the models offered by Edificios de Papel, the download includes several sizes. The building is available in Z scale at 1/220, N scale at 1/160, H0 scale at 1/87, as well as 1/100 and 1/72 scales. This makes it much easier to adapt the model to different collections and projects.

The parts are arranged on printable sheets and the construction follows the simple style normally found in architectural papercrafts. I believe paper between 160 and 200 g/m² will provide a good balance between firmness and ease of folding.

It is great to see Edificios de Papel active again and offering new free models. Mónica and Aníbal have already shared many useful buildings over the years, and this new project is another welcome addition for anyone who enjoys miniature architecture and paper dioramas.

É o tipo de modelo que pode ser usado de muitas maneiras diferentes. Ele pode fazer parte de uma vila francesa, de uma antiga rua europeia, de uma maquete ferroviária ou até mesmo servir como construção de fundo para mesas de RPG e wargame. Imprimindo e montando várias cópias, também é possível criar facilmente uma fileira completa de casas e pequenos estabelecimentos.

No letreiro da fachada está escrito Librairie du Vieux Moulin – Livres Anciens et d’Occasion, que em português significa Livraria do Velho Moinho – Livros Antigos e de Segunda Mão, um pequeno detalhe que ajuda a dar ao edifício a atmosfera de uma antiga cidade francesa.

Como costuma acontecer com os modelos oferecidos pelo Edificios de Papel, o download inclui vários tamanhos. O edifício está disponível na escala Z em 1/220, na escala N em 1/160, na escala H0 em 1/87 e também nas escalas 1/100 e 1/72. Isso facilita bastante a adaptação do modelo a diferentes coleções e projetos.

As peças estão organizadas em folhas prontas para impressão e a montagem segue o estilo simples normalmente encontrado em papercrafts arquitetônicos. Creio que papel com gramatura entre 160 e 200 g/m² oferecerá um bom equilíbrio entre firmeza e facilidade para fazer as dobras.

É muito bom ver o Edificios de Papel novamente ativo e oferecendo novos modelos gratuitos. Mónica e Aníbal já compartilharam muitas construções interessantes ao longo dos anos, e este novo projeto é mais uma ótima adição para quem gosta de arquitetura em miniatura e dioramas de papel.

Four Versions Of A Traditional Stone House Paper Model In Five Different Scales - by Edificios de Papel

Created by the talented Spanish designers Aníbal and Mónica, from the classic Edificios de Papel website, these four houses are different graphic interpretations of the same building. The basic structure remains virtually unchanged, but variations in textures, colors and degrees of weathering give each version its own identity.

The model represents a two-story European rural house with simple, solid and highly versatile architecture. The facade features a large wooden gate beneath a stone arch, a smaller side door and two windows on the upper floor, while the gabled roof completes its traditional appearance.

Each of the four versions is available in five different scales: 1/72, HO in 1/87, 1/100, also known as 15 mm scale, N in 1/160 and Z in 1/220. This variety makes it possible to adapt the models to model railways, historical dioramas, tabletop games, wargames and many other types of miniature scenes.

One interesting way to look at these four versions is to imagine that they all represent the same house at different moments throughout its long existence. Although this is only an interpretation, placing them side by side creates something like a small story told through stones, colors, renovations and the marks left by time.

The house entirely covered with natural stone could perhaps represent the building during its early years or after a careful restoration. The second version retains the stone walls but features green doors and windows, as if new residents had renovated the old house and added a little more color and personality to the facade.

In the third version, the aged green tones, stains and signs of moisture suggest the same house many decades later, transformed by exposure to the weather and the passage of time. The fourth version, featuring stone and aged stucco, has an even older appearance, with worn plaster and traces of successive renovations.

Naturally, the four versions can also represent different houses belonging to the same village. When used together, the variations in colors and textures help avoid the repetitive appearance that usually occurs when several copies of the same model are placed side by side.

For a firmer and more durable construction, the designers recommend paper weighing between 160 and 220 g/m². Another option is to print the parts on ordinary paper and glue them onto cardstock or thin cardboard before cutting them out.

Over the years, Edificios de Papel has become a much-loved reference among fans of architectural papercraft and model railways. These four variations show how new colors, textures and signs of weathering can completely transform the atmosphere of a building without changing its original architecture.

Criadas pelos talentosos designers espanhóis Aníbal e Mónica, do clássico site Edificios de Papel, estas quatro casas são diferentes interpretações gráficas de uma mesma construção. A estrutura básica permanece praticamente inalterada, mas as mudanças nas texturas, nas cores e no grau de envelhecimento dão a cada versão uma identidade própria.

O modelo representa uma casa rural europeia de dois pavimentos, com uma arquitetura simples, sólida e muito versátil. A fachada possui um grande portal de madeira sob um arco de pedra, uma porta lateral menor e duas janelas no andar superior, enquanto o telhado de duas águas completa sua aparência tradicional.

Uma maneira interessante de observar estas quatro versões é imaginar que todas representam a mesma casa em diferentes momentos de sua longa existência. Embora essa seja apenas uma interpretação, colocá-las lado a lado cria quase uma pequena história contada por meio das pedras, das cores, das reformas e das marcas deixadas pelo tempo.

A casa inteiramente revestida por pedras naturais talvez represente a construção em seus primeiros anos ou depois de uma cuidadosa restauração. A segunda versão mantém as paredes de pedra, mas recebe portas e janelas verdes, como se novos moradores tivessem reformado a antiga residência e acrescentado um pouco mais de cor e personalidade à fachada.

Na terceira versão, os tons de verde envelhecido, as manchas e as marcas de umidade sugerem a mesma casa muitas décadas depois, modificada pela exposição ao clima e pela passagem do tempo. A quarta versão, com pedra e estuco envelhecido, apresenta uma aparência ainda mais antiga, com reboco desgastado e sinais de sucessivas reformas.

Naturalmente, as quatro versões também podem representar casas diferentes pertencentes a uma mesma vila. Quando utilizadas juntas, as variações de cores e texturas evitam a aparência repetitiva que normalmente surge quando várias cópias de um mesmo modelo são colocadas lado a lado.

Para uma construção mais firme e resistente, os autores recomendam papel com gramatura entre 160 e 220 g/m². Outra possibilidade é imprimir as peças em papel comum e colá-las sobre cartolina ou papelão fino antes do recorte.

Ao longo dos anos, o Edificios de Papel tornou-se uma referência muito querida entre os fãs de papercraft arquitetônico e modelismo ferroviário. Estas quatro variações mostram como novas cores, texturas e sinais de envelhecimento podem transformar completamente a atmosfera de um edifício sem modificar sua arquitetura original.

The Ohio House Motel Paper Model In HO Scale - by Wurlington Brothers Press

This charming papercraft reproduces the reception building and coffee shop of the Ohio House Motel, one of Chicago's most traditional motels. Created by Matt Bergstrom for the Build Your Own Chicago series, by Wurlington Brothers Press, the model was designed in HO scale (1/87) and takes up only two printed sheets, offering a relatively simple assembly but with many characteristic details of early 1960s American architecture.

Since its textures were created from photographs of the real building, even with just a few pieces the final result preserves the distinctive look of the original construction with great fidelity. This makes the model an excellent addition to model railroads, urban dioramas or paper architecture collections.

The building depicted really exists and is part of Chicago's history. Opened in 1960, the Ohio House Motel is considered one of the few preserved examples of Googie architecture in the city.

Googie architecture became popular in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s, marked by futuristic lines, Space Age inspiration and an optimistic design that reflected the technological enthusiasm of the period. Located just a few minutes from downtown Chicago and Michigan Avenue, the motel welcomed guests for decades, passing through different phases of the city, from periods of urban decline to its later revitalization.

Among its most striking features are the irregular stone-covered façade, the famous retro sign and the traditional coffee shop next to the reception area, all reproduced with great fidelity in this small paper model.

Apesar do nome, vale uma curiosidade: nos Estados Unidos, um motel não tem o mesmo significado que no Brasil, pois lá o termo normalmente se refere a um tipo de hotel voltado principalmente para viajantes em trânsito, geralmente localizado às margens de rodovias ou em áreas de fácil acesso para automóveis, oferecendo hospedagem prática, diárias de curta duração e estacionamento próximo ou junto aos quartos.

Entre suas características mais marcantes estão a fachada revestida de pedras irregulares, o famoso letreiro retrô e o tradicional coffee shop instalado junto à recepção, elementos reproduzidos com bastante fidelidade neste pequeno modelo de papel.
