How about creating your own collection of paper insects, just like those old specimen display boxes found in natural history museums? This beautiful project, created by American designer Miss Mandee, from the website Designs by Miss Mandee, lets you assemble a collection of butterflies, beetles, dragonflies, praying mantises, centipedes, and even a large spider, all made entirely of paper.
The insects are assembled in layers, creating an interesting three-dimensional effect, and can be arranged inside a display box or frame to make a very original decorative piece. The result resembles those old entomological collections, with the advantage that no real insects are needed.
The designer uses a Cricut electronic cutting machine to prepare the pieces, but that doesn't mean you need one yourself. The shapes are relatively simple, and with an ordinary pair of scissors, a little patience, and some care, it is perfectly possible to cut out and assemble everything by hand.
Another interesting detail is that the templates come without predefined colors. This means you can print them directly onto colored or textured paper, creating different color combinations and effects. Another possibility is to print everything on plain white paper and let the kids color the insects however they like, turning the project into a fun craft activity as well.
The download is completely free, with no registration or sign-up required, and is available directly through Google Drive. The files include a six-page PDF with printable templates, ideal for cutting out the pieces by hand, as well as SVG files intended for electronic cutting machines such as the Cricut.
The download link is located just below the section titled "SUPPLIES" on the designer's page.
Although it fits perfectly with Halloween decorations, this collection of paper insects can also be displayed throughout the year. It is also a great idea for school activities and nature-related projects.
