Nativity scenes are artistic representations of the birth of Jesus Christ, typically composed of figures such as Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, animals, shepherds, the Wise Men, and other elements. Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with popularizing the Nativity scene in 1223 in Greccio, Italy.
He organized a live reenactment of the birth of Jesus to emphasize the humility of the event and make it more accessible to the people. Following Saint Francis's event, Nativity representations began incorporating sculptures and models, initially displayed in churches and monasteries.
During the Renaissance, Nativity scenes started being crafted for domestic use, especially in Italy and Spain. The practice spread across Europe and Latin America with colonization.
Nativity scenes are usually set up at the beginning of Advent (four weeks before Christmas) or on December 8 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) and remain until Epiphany (January 6), celebrating the visit of the Wise Men to the Baby Jesus.
Each region and culture adds unique touches, ranging from materials to artistic styles, such as the Neapolitan Baroque, German paper Nativity scenes, and indigenous versions in Latin America.

“Nativity scenes represent the biblical story of Christmas in three dimensions. They are generally not historically accurate, and the scene itself is set in an environment familiar to the viewer.
The architecture of the stable, in particular, varies regionally. There are cribs, alpine huts, half-timbered houses, mud huts, caves, and massive stone buildings.
This craft sheet from Mondorf depicts the Nativity scene in buildings typical of the Rhineland. The model contains 171 pieces and is in 1/45 scale. It is quite common to set the Nativity story in a familiar environment. It is more about the story's message than historical accuracy.

Os presépios são representações artísticas do nascimento de Jesus Cristo, geralmente compostos por figuras de Maria, José, o Menino Jesus, animais, pastores, os Reis Magos e outros elementos. São Francisco de Assis é creditado por popularizar o presépio em 1223, em Greccio, Itália.
Ele organizou uma encenação ao vivo do nascimento de Jesus para enfatizar a humildade do evento e torná-lo mais acessível ao povo.
