This curious 1/35 scale Volkswagen Type 2 Snowcat is a creation of the Italian website Paper Diorama and is one of those models that combines two things most people would never imagine together: the classic body of a Volkswagen Bus and a complete set of snow tracks.
The papercraft occupies three printed sheets. The first two are dedicated to the vehicle itself, including the bodywork, chassis, wheels and the large side tracks. The third sheet contains an optional display stand, very simple to assemble, featuring a snowy landscape backdrop and enough room to showcase the finished model. Those who wish to save paper can build only the vehicle, but the small stand certainly adds a nice touch to the presentation.
Despite its unusual appearance, the model does not seem overly complicated to build. The body retains the instantly recognizable shape of the classic Volkswagen Bus, while the lower section is formed by the tracked system. Judging by the photos of the completed model, the final result is quite striking, especially thanks to the contrast between the bright yellow body, the colorful graphics on the sides and the large dark tracks.
And if you think this strange Volkswagen came solely from the imagination of the designers at Paper Diorama, the story becomes even more interesting: the vehicle actually existed.
The machine was used by ÖAMTC, the Austrian automobile association, and combined the body of a 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Panel Van with the chassis of a 1960 Bombardier snowcat. In place of conventional wheels were wide snow tracks powered by a Ford Taunus V4 engine. The result was a kind of tracked Volkswagen Bus capable of traveling across snowy terrain.
But the most curious feature was hidden in the roof. The vehicle was part of an ÖAMTC campaign aimed at younger drivers and was transformed into a kind of mobile disco. It featured a DJ booth that could be raised through the roof, along with a complete sound system. In other words, someone apparently decided that a Volkswagen Bus riding on snow tracks was still not unusual enough and added a DJ booth to it.
This papercraft first appeared here on Papermau in July of 2014. More than twelve years have passed since that original post and, considering that roughly 15,000 posts have been published on the blog since then, I thought this small and unusual Volkswagen deserved another chance to return to the front page. Many current visitors have probably never seen it before, and even some longtime readers may have forgotten about it.
It is also exactly the kind of model I enjoy finding: not only a beautiful and unusual vehicle to build in paper, but a reproduction of a real machine with such an extraordinary story that it almost seems fictional.
Este curioso Volkswagen Type 2 Snowcat em escala 1/35 é uma criação do site italiano Paper Diorama e é daqueles modelos que misturam duas coisas que normalmente não imaginaríamos juntas: a clássica carroceria de uma Kombi Volkswagen e um conjunto completo de esteiras para neve.
O papercraft ocupa três folhas impressas. As duas primeiras são dedicadas ao veículo propriamente dito, incluindo a carroceria, o chassi, as rodas e as duas grandes esteiras laterais. A terceira folha traz um expositor opcional, muito simples de montar, com uma paisagem coberta de neve ao fundo e espaço suficiente para acomodar o modelo pronto. Assim, quem quiser economizar papel pode montar somente o veículo, mas o pequeno stand certamente ajuda bastante na apresentação do modelo.
Apesar do aspecto incomum, a montagem não parece excessivamente complicada. A carroceria mantém as formas bastante reconhecíveis da velha Kombi, enquanto a parte inferior é formada pelo conjunto de esteiras. Pelas fotos do modelo pronto dá para perceber que o resultado é muito interessante, especialmente pelo contraste entre o amarelo vivo da carroceria, as ilustrações nas laterais e as grandes esteiras escuras.
E se você está pensando que este estranho Volkswagen saiu apenas da imaginação dos criadores do Paper Diorama, a história fica ainda mais interessante: o veículo realmente existiu.
A máquina foi utilizada pelo ÖAMTC, o clube automobilístico austríaco, e combinava a carroceria de um Volkswagen Type 2 Panel Van de 1966 com o chassi de um snowcat Bombardier de 1960. No lugar das rodas convencionais estavam as largas esteiras, movimentadas por um antigo motor Ford Taunus V4. O resultado era uma espécie de Kombi sobre lagartas, capaz de circular sobre a neve.
Mas a parte mais curiosa ainda estava escondida no teto. O veículo fazia parte de uma iniciativa do ÖAMTC voltada ao público jovem e foi transformado também em uma espécie de discoteca móvel: possuía uma cabine de DJ que podia ser elevada através do teto, além de equipamento de som. Em outras palavras, alguém realmente decidiu que uma Kombi Volkswagen sobre esteiras de neve ainda não era suficientemente extravagante e resolveu colocar uma cabine de DJ nela.
Este papercraft apareceu aqui no Papermau pela primeira vez em julho de 2014. Já se passaram mais de doze anos desde aquela postagem e, considerando que cerca de 15.000 posts foram publicados no blog desde então, achei que este pequeno e estranho Volkswagen merecia voltar à primeira página. Muitos dos leitores atuais provavelmente nunca chegaram a vê-lo e talvez até alguns dos visitantes daquela época já tenham se esquecido dele.
Além disso, é exatamente o tipo de modelo que gosto de encontrar: não apenas um veículo bonito ou diferente para montar em papel, mas a reprodução de uma máquina real com uma história tão incomum que parece ter sido inventada.
