BioShock is a first-person shooter video game developed by
2K Boston and designed by
Ken Levine. It was released for
Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 on August 21, 2007 in
North America, and three days later in
Europe and Australia. It became available on
Steam on August 21, 2007.
A PlayStation 3 version of the game, which was developed by
2K Marin, 2K Boston, 2K Australia and Digital Extremes, was released internationally on October 17, 2008 and in North America on October 21, 2008 with some additional features. The game was also released for the
Mac OS X operating system on
October 7, 2009 by Feral Interactive. A version of the game for mobile platforms was developed by
IG Fun. A sequel,
BioShock 2, was developed by
2K Marin and released on

O jogo ocorre em 1960, em uma fictícia metrópole subaquática chamada
Rapture, construída no fundo do
Oceano Atlântico, por um empresário chamado
Andrew Ryan.
Rapture foi projectada para ser inteiramente auto-suficiente, produzindo energia elétrica, produção de alimentos, purificação de água e sistema de defesa reforçado por aberturas vulcânicas submarinas. Durante o início de
1950, a população de
Rapture com milhares de pessoas foi composta por pessoas que
Ryan considerava os melhores exemplos da humanidade, uma economia grande e rica produzida por muitas pessoas, fornecendo diferentes produtos de qualidade para todas as classes sociais.
Uma descoberta científica acabou com o equilíbrio da sociedade, uma jovem cientista alemã chamada
Brigid Tenenbaum descobriu uma espécie de parasita aquático que poderia esconder puras células-tronco, chamado depois de
"ADAM". ADAMs podiam ser usados para melhorar um corpo, aumentando suas capacidades físicas e mentais, curando doenças e ferimentos.
ADAM foi desenvolvido em séries de modificações genéticas que poderiam dar aos humanos poderes especiais (que usa um soro chamado
EVE) e adicionava ao usuário poderes próprios.
Drª. Tenenbaum criou as
Little Sisters (Irmãs Pequenas) como maneira de recuperar o
ADAM dos mortos, convertendo o material de dentro destes corpos de volta para uma forma usável, como os loucos habitantes da cidade começaram a matar

Yi Suchong e o projetista
Gilbert Alexander, criaram uma espécie de protetor encouraçado chamado
Big Daddy . Entretanto, as descobertas tiveram um custo: a sociedade de
Rapture começou a abusar do
ADAM, o que fez com que muitas pessoas ficassem loucas. A sociedade inteira desmoronou na
