Caveirão is the popular name of the armored car used by Spec Ops of the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro in raids in the favelas of this state. Officially , the name of this car is Armored Personnel Carrier . Unlike what most people think , he is not a tank , it is a support vehicle . It is used to support police operations and and rescue injured police officers and people in the localities uncontested by organized crime. Despite being criticized by human rights organizations , the Caveirão is defended by the police as a security measure.
The vehicles are characterized by their black paint , the logo of the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Military Police ( BOPE ) , which features a skull with a dagger and pistols stuck golden cross ( hence the nickname ) , and the use of speakers that warn the arrival of the vehicle. Its use generates extreme controversy among sectors of society. On one side , it defends the continuity of operations , and even its expansion , due to the role they would have to bring security to law enforcement .
On the other hand , called for the immediate abolition of operations, because, according to scholars , mass raids would violate the human rights. Police vehicles used for special interventions in the ghettos , were initially used in South Africa , between 1948 and 1994 by the apartheid regime.
This type of vehicle is customarily used in countries like the U.S. to face heavily armed bandits , with which a common shield or even the lack of this could come to cause serious injury to police . Following the same rule , is used in the city slums of Rio de Janeiro because of the weapons used by drug traffickers : rifles , grenades and anti-aircraft guns .

Caveirão é o nome popular do carro blindado usado pelo batalhão de operações policiais especiais da Polícia Militar do Estado do Rio de Janeiro em incursões nas favelas na capital fluminense. Oficialmente, o nome desse carro blindado é, veículo blindado de transporte de pessoal. Diferente do que a maioria das pessoas pensam, ele não é um carro de combate, ele é um carro de apoio.
É utilizado para apoiar os policiais em operações ou resgatar policiais e pessoas feridas nas localidades conflagradas pelo crime organizado. Apesar de ser criticado por entidades de Direitos Humanos, o Caveirão é defendido pelas polícias como medida de segurança aos policiais. Os veículos se caracterizam por sua pintura preta, pelo logotipo do Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais da Polícia Militar (BOPE), que apresenta uma caveira com uma adaga encravada e garruchas douradas cruzadas (daí o apelido), e pelo uso de alto-falantes que avisam a chegada do blindado. Seu uso é razão de extrema controvérsia entre setores da sociedade.
De um lado, defende-se a continuidade das operações, e mesmo sua ampliação, em razão do papel que teriam para trazer segurança aos agentes da lei. De outro lado, defende-se a abolição imediata das operações. pois, segundo estudiosos, as incursões seriam violadoras massivas dos direitos humanos. Veículos policiais especiais usados para intervenções nos guetos, foram inicialmente utilizados na África do Sul, entre 1948 e 1994, pelo regime segregacionista do apartheid.
