Preserved thanks to the Internet Archive, the old personal website of Bernd Matthes holds a small but valuable treasure for fans of historical railways and papercraft: a paper model of the Untersteinach railway station, located along the former Ludwig South-North Railway, the famous Bavarian line that once connected the south and north of Germany, dating back to the 19th century.

Untersteinach station (more precisely Untersteinach b. Stadtsteinach, in Bavaria) was one of many stops along the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn, inaugurated in the first half of the 19th century. 

This railway line served as the backbone of Bavarian infrastructure for decades, linking Lindau on Lake Constance to Hof in northern Bavaria, passing through cities such as Augsburg, Nuremberg, and Bamberg. 

There’s little information available about Bernd Matthes, the author of the model, beyond his now-archived personal homepage. Still, it’s clear that he had a genuine interest in railway history and model making. 

His gesture of offering the model for free, at a time when few hobbyists had the tools or knowledge to digitize physical scale models, reveals the passion of someone dedicated to preserving, sharing, and perhaps even inspiring others. 

Today, this humble model endures as a small monument, not just to the Untersteinach station and the glorious steam era, but also to the early internet days, when personal web pages were crafted with love, patience, and an old scanner.

Preservado graças ao Internet Archive, o antigo site pessoal de Bernd Matthes guarda uma pequena, mas valiosa relíquia para os fãs de ferrovias históricas e papercraft: um modelo em papel da estação ferroviária de Untersteinach, situada na antiga linha Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn, a célebre ferrovia bávara do Sul para o Norte da Alemanha, que remonta ao século XIX.
