My friend John Paepcke built the Greek-Roman Ruins and
kindly sent me some photos of his nice work.
He also wrote a nice letter telling some of
his experiences with paper modeling, which
I took the liberty to transcribe below:
- "Hello Mauther, I live in Maryland, USA. My Father taught me
how the build paper models during WWII. These were
large glider models (you would have to fill the nose with candle wax) with a
wing span of 18 to 24 inches. They had
hollow fuselage and wings, like the
modern paper scale models. After WWII, I dropped out of paper modeling and went into
wood and plastic until 1986. I built a
detailed Ford Trimotor as a gift for a cousin in Germany. Then
went back to wood and plastic. About
2010, I again
tried paper and really got hooked! I have been
building paper models ever since. This
last couple of years, I have been working on dioramas for my Granddaughters. The first on is complete and is
built exclusively of very old (circa 1900) paper models. The one I am working on now will have
a Queen Anne cottage, a wooden pier, a large 1920s yacht, your two ruins models, an extinct Futabasaurus, a green sea turtle, and a Tucker sedan. I have
all the major pieces finished except the Tomb, which I have started.
The pier is the only thing that I built from scratch. I could not find a kit that I liked, so I downloaded plans for a real one from the Corps of Engineers web site and scaled it down. I
have been working on this one for about a year and a half. Anyway, I have attached photos of some of the pieces that are finished. I will also include the Tomb, however, I have only finished one wall, so far."

gentilmente enviou-me algumas fotos de seu belo trabalho. Ele também escreveu uma simpática carta contando um pouco de
suas experiências com o papel modelismo, que tomei a liberdade de transcrever abaixo:
- "Olá, Mauther, eu moro em Maryland, EUA.
Meu pai me ensinou a
montar modelos de papel durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Estes eram
modelos de avióes muito grandes (você tinha que
encerar o papel com cera de vela para que ele não desmanchasse com o próprio peso) com uma
extensão de asas de 18 a 24 polegadas. Eles tinham
fuselagem e asas ocas, como os
modernos modelos em escala de papel. Depois da
Segunda Guerra Mundial, deixei de mexer com papel e
entrei no modelismo em madeira e plástico até 1986. Nessa época c
onstruí um Ford Trimotor detalhado como um presente para um
primo na Alemanha. Lá por
2010, eu
voltei ao papel e desta vez fui fisgado mesmo! Venho construindo modelos de papel desde então. Neste último par de anos, eu
tenho trabalhado em dioramas para minhas netas. O primeiro é feito
exclusivamente de modelos de papel muito antigos (impressos por volta de 1900). O que eu estou trabalhando agora terá
uma chalé em estilo vitoriano, um cais de madeira, um iate grande dos anos 20, seus dois modelos das ruínas, um Futabasaurus extinto, uma tartaruga marinha, e um sedan Tucker. Tenho todas as peças principais acabadas, exceto o Túmulo, que eu já comecei a montar.
O pier é a única coisa que eu construí a partir do zero. Eu não consegui encontrar um kit que gostasse, então eu
baixei os templates do site dos Corpos de Engenheiros Reais e reduzí a escala. Eu
tenho trabalhado neste presente para minhas netas por cerca de um ano e meio. De qualquer forma,
anexei fotos de algumas das peças que estão acabadas. Também vou incluir o túmulo, no entanto, só tenho terminado uma parede, até agora."
