This is the Zombie in a Barrel papercraft, created in 2011 and originally published on the blog in 2012. For many years, the model was lost, as I had misplaced the original templates.
Fortunately, thanks to the generosity of my friend Revell-Fan, a member of the Zealot Hobby Forum, the papercraft could come back to life! He kept a copy of the files and kindly shared them with me, allowing me to republish the model here on the blog.
Zombie in a Barrel is a small horror model, freely inspired by classics such as The Return of the Living Dead II, Re-Animator, Shaun of the Dead, and Zombieland. I would also include The Walking Dead comics on that list, but not the TV series – I found it rather dull.
For me, the barrel is an iconic symbol of zombie movies, which motivated me to create this model. I always wanted to have one of these on my shelf, and the modeling challenge, done entirely in MS Paint, was an extra reward.
Besides getting the templates back, I also found the original Zombie papercraft I'd made in 2012. It was in a dusty box, protected from sunlight and moisture, and, as you can see from the GIF image that opens this post, it's in perfect condition, despite being 13 years old.
So I drilled a hole in the bottom of the barrel and inserted a small LED light bulb, one of those that change colors. The effect is what you see in the first image of this post. The color changes are slower, but I had to reduce the number of frames and the quality of the GIF file so it wouldn't be too heavy when loading.
To calculate the barrel’s diameter and design the “lids,” I measured the circumference and divided it by π (3.1416...), a trick I also use to determine the wheel diameters on my paper car models, such as the Rum-Runner - Oldtimer Pickup Truck.
The zombie’s “face” was adapted from a Tales from the Crypt cover, though I don’t quite remember which one.
The images below, taken from The Return of the Living Dead (1985), were the main inspiration for this papercraft, helping define both the look and the mood of the project. One of them shows the zombie “Tarman” before being reanimated by the toxic gas 2-4-5 Trioxin, and the other displays the army serial number that I reproduced on my own barrel.

Além de ter conseguido os templates novamente, eu ainda achei o papercraft original do Zumbi que eu havia montado em 2012. Ele estava em uma caixa empoeirada, protegido da luz solar e da humidade e, como você podem ver pela imagem .GIF que abre este post, está em perfeitas condições, apesar de seus 13 anos de idade.
Então eu fiz um furo na parte de baixo do barril e coloquei uma pequena lâmpada de LED dessas que mudam de cor. O efeito é esse que vocês podem ver na primeira imagem do post. A mudança de cores é mais lenta, mas eu tive que diminuir o número de frames e a qualidade do .GIF para não fica rmuito pesado na hora de carregar o post.
O Zombie in a Barrel é um pequeno modelo de terror, inspirado livremente em clássicos como A Volta dos Mortos-Vivos II, Re-Animator, Shaun of the Dead e Zombieland. Eu incluiria também os quadrinhos de The Walking Dead nessa lista, mas deixo a série de TV de fora – achei-a bem monótona.
Para mim, o barril é um ícone dos filmes de zumbis, o que me motivou a criar este modelo. Sempre quis ter um desses na estante, e o desafio de modelagem, todo feito no MS Paint, foi um bônus.
Para calcular o diâmetro do barril e criar as "tampas", medi a circunferência e dividi pelo π (3,1416...), um truque que também uso para calcular o diâmetro de pneus em carros de papel, como o Rum-Runner - Oldtimer Pickup Truck.
O "rosto" do zumbi é uma adaptação de alguma capa de Tales from the Crypt, embora eu não me lembre exatamente qual.
As imagens acima, tiradas de The Return of the Living Dead (1985), foram a inspiração principal para este papercraft, guiando o visual e o espírito do projeto. Uma delas mostra o zumbi "Tarman", antes de ser reanimado pelo gás tóxico 2-4-5 Trioxine, e a outra exibe o número de série do exército, que eu repliquei no meu barril.
