Created by Japanese designer T. Ichiyama exclusively for Canon website, this is the paper model of the Great Buddha of Nara, the largest Buddha statue in Japan and also the largest bronze Buddha on the planet.
The gigantic statue is located in the center of the main pavilion of Todaiji Temple in Nara, western Japan, where it is housed by the largest wooden building in the world.
The city of Nara was the seat of the first imperial capital of Japan, before Kyoto, between the years 710 and 784. During this period, monumental works, such as the Todaiji Temple, appeared.
The Great Buddha, with a colossal height of almost 15 meters, took about three years to build and was completed in the year 749.
The pavilion that covers it was inaugurated with a great ceremony in 752, but was almost destroyed after suffering some fires due to constant wars in the Nara period. The current building is dated 1709, so the version we can see today is just over three centuries old.
