The Steampunk Mansion Papercraft Project - Development Update And Free 3D SketchUp Model - by Papermau

Last week I shared a preview of this Steampunk Mansion and thought it would already be finished by this Friday. But, as often happens with personal projects, every time I work on it I find new little details that can be improved, so I decided to keep refining the model before releasing it.

Over the past few days I added balconies to three sides of the building, changed the position of some doors and windows, incorporated new pipes and gears into the walls and refined several textures to make the whole model look more balanced. As I keep examining the model in 3D, new ideas naturally come to mind, and it would be a shame not to include them.

The images in this post show the current stage of the project from several different angles. There are still a few details that I would like to improve and, because of that, if the model is not released later this week, it will simply be because I believe it can still be made a little better. I'd rather spend a few extra days polishing everything than publish it before it's truly ready.

In the meantime, I decided to share the three-dimensional version of the mansion with anyone who is curious to explore the project. The model is provided in the .SKP format, which can be opened for free with virtually any version of SketchUp, including the more recent Trimble releases. You can rotate the model, zoom in and out, inspect every detail and, since the file is not locked, you're also welcome to modify it or simply use it for study and inspiration. And, as always here on Papermau, the download is easy and safe, with no redirects, link shorteners or waiting pages—just click the link and download the file directly from Google Drive.

Interestingly enough, the 3D version of this mansion was built using the ancient SketchUp 6, released back in 2007. Despite its age, it remains an incredibly lightweight, fast and capable tool for the way I work. That's especially helpful because my own computer is a veteran as well: it still runs Windows 7 and has far less memory than what would be considered ideal nowadays. Compared to today's machines, it feels almost steam-powered... which, come to think of it, is quite appropriate for someone who spends so much time designing steampunk models. Along with the 3D model, I'll also include a link to a version of SketchUp 6 for anyone curious to try the same classic tool I still use today, as well as a link to Trimble's official website, where you can download the current free version of SketchUp.

Na semana passada apresentei aqui uma prévia desta Mansão Steampunk e imaginei que ela já estaria pronta para publicação nesta sexta-feira. Mas, como acontece com muitos projetos pessoais, enquanto vou trabalhando sempre encontro pequenos detalhes que podem ser melhorados, então resolvi continuar refinando o modelo antes de disponibilizá-lo.

Nos últimos dias foram acrescentadas varandas em três lados da construção, algumas portas e janelas mudaram de posição, novas tubulações e engrenagens foram incorporadas às fachadas e várias texturas receberam pequenos ajustes para deixar o conjunto mais harmonioso. À medida que observo o modelo montado em 3D, novas ideias acabam surgindo naturalmente e seria uma pena não aproveitá-las.

As imagens deste post mostram o estágio atual do projeto visto por diversos ângulos. Ainda existem alguns detalhes que pretendo revisar e, por isso, se o modelo não for publicado ainda esta semana, será apenas porque acredito que ele ainda pode ficar um pouco melhor. Prefiro gastar mais alguns dias aperfeiçoando tudo do que publicar algo antes da hora.

Enquanto isso, resolvi disponibilizar o arquivo tridimensional da mansão para quem tiver curiosidade de explorar o projeto. O modelo está no formato .SKP, que pode ser aberto gratuitamente em praticamente qualquer versão do SketchUp, inclusive nas versões mais recentes da Trimble. Curiosamente, o modelo 3D usado para revisar e aperfeiçoar esta mansão foi criado utilizando o antiquíssimo SketchUp 6, lançado em 2007. Apesar da idade, ele continua sendo uma ferramenta extremamente leve, rápida e suficiente para o meu modo de trabalhar. Isso é uma grande vantagem para mim, já que meu computador também é um veterano: roda Windows 7 e tem bem menos memória do que seria considerado ideal hoje em dia. Comparado às máquinas atuais, ele parece funcionar quase movido a vapor... o que, pensando bem, combina perfeitamente com alguém que passa boa parte do tempo desenhando modelos steampunk. Junto com o arquivo 3D, deixarei um link para uma versão do SketchUp 6, para quem tiver curiosidade de experimentar a mesma ferramenta que ainda utilizo, além de um link para o site oficial da Trimble, onde é possível baixar gratuitamente a versão atual do SketchUp.

Seven Easy-To-Build Little Robot Paper Toys - by Paper Foldables

Robots have always held a special place in the world of paper toys. From the friendly retro automatons inspired by 1950s science fiction to the giant machines of anime and video games, these paper creations have fascinated hobbyists for decades thanks to their simple geometric shapes, enjoyable assembly process, and the endless creative possibilities they offer.

Perhaps that is why robot paper toys have remained so popular over the years. This collection created by Bryan, from the excellent Paper Foldables website, is a perfect example of how a simple sheet of paper can be transformed into characters full of charm and personality.

This post brings together seven free paper toys, each presenting a different interpretation of the robot theme. Although they all belong to the same mechanical family, every model has its own distinctive style, as if each one came from a completely different universe.

Twiki features a friendly and approachable design reminiscent of the little robotic assistants seen in classic science fiction movies and cartoons. Berzerk 2600, on the other hand, pays tribute to the robots from the classic 1980 arcade game Berzerk, faithfully capturing the charm of the simple pixel-inspired graphics that became iconic during the early days of video gaming.

Gadget-O combines the appearance of a mechanical toy with that of a helpful household robot, while Legal Robot takes a humorous approach by imagining an electronic attorney, always ready to defend its client with the cold logic that only a machine could possess. Both designs are simple, clever, and full of character.

Frobot is another particularly charismatic character. Even its name suggests a fun and friendly personality, making it easy to imagine starring in an animated series or an indie video game. By contrast, Destructoid presents a much tougher appearance, looking like a battle machine straight out of a classic science fiction comic book.

Completing the collection is Claptrap, perhaps the best-known robot of the group. Bryan created this paper toy for 2K Games to help promote the release of Borderlands 2, and the model perfectly captures the character's exaggerated humor, endless optimism, and lovable clumsiness that made Claptrap one of the franchise's most recognizable mascots.

An interesting fact is that robot paper toys became especially popular during the early 2000s. Their simple construction allowed anyone to print and assemble them at home, quickly turning these little paper robots into collectible desk companions found in offices, bedrooms, classrooms, and studios around the world.

All the models featured here follow the unmistakable Paper Foldables style: few parts, beginner-friendly assembly, and clean, attractive designs that appeal to newcomers and experienced paper modelers alike. They are perfect projects for a relaxing afternoon of cutting, folding, and gluing. To build them, you will only need the printed templates, scissors, white glue, and paper ranging from 160 to 200 gsm. A ruler and a scoring tool may also be helpful for achieving cleaner folds and a more precise finish. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced paper modeler, these charming little robots are sure to earn a place on your desk, bookshelf, or display shelf.

Talvez por isso existam tantos robôs memoráveis no mundo do papercraft. Esta coleção criada por Bryan, do excelente site Paper Foldables, mostra muito bem como um simples modelo de papel pode ganhar personalidade própria e transmitir emoções apenas com formas, cores e um bom projeto.

Reunidos nesta postagem estão sete paper toys gratuitos que apresentam diferentes interpretações desse tema tão querido pelos modelistas. Embora todos sejam robôs, cada um possui identidade própria, como se viessem de universos completamente diferentes.

Twiki tem um visual simpático e amigável, lembrando aqueles pequenos assistentes eletrônicos vistos em desenhos e filmes de ficção científica. Já Berzerk 2600 presta homenagem aos robôs do clássico videogame Berzerk, lançado em 1980, recriando em papel o charme dos gráficos simples que marcaram uma geração inteira de jogadores.

Gadget-O mistura a aparência de um brinquedo mecânico com a de um robô doméstico, enquanto Legal Robot brinca com a ideia de um improvável advogado eletrônico, sempre pronto para defender seu cliente com a lógica implacável de uma máquina. São conceitos simples, mas executados com muito bom humor.

Frobot é outro personagem bastante carismático. Seu próprio nome já transmite simpatia e faz lembrar aqueles robôs amigáveis presentes em animações e jogos independentes. Em contraste, Destructoid apresenta um visual muito mais robusto, parecendo uma máquina de combate saída diretamente das páginas de uma revista de ficção científica.

Fechando a coleção está Claptrap, talvez o mais famoso de todos. O irreverente robô da série Borderlands 2 foi transformado em paper toy pelo próprio Bryan a pedido da 2K Games para ajudar na divulgação do lançamento do jogo. O modelo captura perfeitamente o humor exagerado e a personalidade desastrada que fizeram do personagem um dos mascotes mais queridos da franquia.

Uma curiosidade interessante é que os paper toys de robôs se tornaram extremamente populares no início dos anos 2000. Seu formato simples permitia que qualquer pessoa imprimisse os modelos em casa, transformando rapidamente esses pequenos personagens em peças de coleção espalhadas por mesas de escritório, estantes e computadores ao redor do mundo.

Todos os modelos desta seleção seguem o estilo característico do Paper Foldables: poucas peças, montagem simples e um acabamento limpo que agrada tanto iniciantes quanto modelistas mais experientes. Pikachu Libre From Pokémon - Paper Model With PDF And Pepakura PDO File - by Darkcrash

Inspired by Pikachu Libre, one of the most charismatic and unique versions of the Pokémon universe, this beautiful papercraft was created by the talented designer Darkcrash and is available for free at the Papercraft LED website.

With its design inspired by traditional Mexican lucha libre, complete with mask, cape and champion pose, Pikachu Libre has won the hearts of many fans since its debut in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, later appearing in Pokkén Tournament and becoming one of the most popular variations of the franchise's iconic mascot.

This model is highly detailed and, once assembled, faithfully recreates every feature of the character. The complete papercraft is spread across nine printable sheets and is available as a PDF download. It also includes the original PDO file.

This file can be opened using the free version of Pepakura Viewer, allowing you to view the model in full 3D, freely rotate every part, understand how each piece fits together and greatly simplify the assembly process, especially in the more complex sections.

When opening the PDO file for the first time with the free version of Pepakura Viewer, a password request window may appear. Simply ignore it and click the Open with Pepakura Viewer option located just below the password field. The model will open normally and can be viewed without any limitations during the building process.

If you do not already have the free version of Pepakura Viewer installed on your computer, don't worry. At the end of this post you will find a link to the program's official download page. It is a lightweight and free application for viewing PDO files and an extremely useful tool for anyone building papercraft models distributed in this format.

Vintage Texaco Gas Pumps Papercraft Set - A Papermau Classic Returns - Download Now!

This is one of those models that are part of the history of the Papermau blog. Originally published in October 2012, it eventually became unavailable when the download link stopped working. I took the opportunity to reorganize the project, revise the template sheet and make the model available again as a much cleaner and better organized PDF file. The papercraft itself remains exactly the same, but it is now much more enjoyable to print and assemble.

The model represents a small set inspired by vintage Texaco gas stations, featuring two fuel pumps mounted on a base and a central post holding advertising signs on both sides. It is a simple accessory, but one that works very well with dioramas, garages, workshops, gas stations and vintage urban scenes.

The final scale is approximately between 1/24 and 1/30, depending on the paper format used for printing. To achieve a good balance between strength and ease of assembly, I recommend using paper weighing between 120 and 160 gsm. You can also have fun experimenting with the scale by reducing it. For example, you can set your printer to print two pages per sheet, allowing you to build two complete sets on a single sheet at approximately half the original scale.

A small detail that makes a big difference in the final result is the fuel pump hoses. On the assembled model shown in the photos, I used two short pieces of gray telephone wire approximately 3 mm in diameter. This gives the pumps a much more realistic appearance and allows the hoses to hang naturally beside them.

I should also point out that I was never concerned with making this set historically accurate. Most likely, the fuel pumps and the hanging Texaco sign belong to different periods in the company's history, but historical accuracy was never my goal. Back in 2012, I simply thought the two elements looked good together, and I still feel exactly the same way today.

I hope this small re-release allows new visitors to discover one of the earliest original Papermau models, while giving longtime readers the chance to revisit a little piece of the blog's early days, now presented in a cleaner, better organized and much easier to assemble version.

Aproveitei a oportunidade para reorganizar o projeto, revisar a folha de montagem e disponibilizar o modelo em um arquivo PDF muito mais limpo e organizado. O papercraft continua sendo exatamente o mesmo, mas agora está muito mais agradável de imprimir e montar.

O modelo representa um pequeno conjunto inspirado em antigos postos de gasolina da Texaco, composto por duas bombas de combustível montadas sobre uma base e um poste central sustentando placas publicitárias em ambos os lados. É um acessório simples, mas que combina muito bem com dioramas, garagens, oficinas, postos de gasolina e cenários urbanos de época.

A escala final fica aproximadamente entre 1/24 e 1/30, dependendo do formato do papel utilizado na impressão. Para obter um bom equilíbrio entre resistência e facilidade de montagem, recomendo utilizar papel com gramatura entre 120 e 160 g/m². Você também pode brincar com a escala reduzindo-a. Basta configurar sua impressora para imprimir duas páginas por folha, obtendo assim dois conjuntos completos em uma única folha, cada um com aproximadamente metade da escala original.

Um pequeno detalhe que ajuda bastante no resultado final são as mangueiras das bombas. No modelo montado mostrado nas fotografias, utilizei dois pequenos pedaços de fio de telefonia cinza com aproximadamente 3 mm de diâmetro, o que deu um aspecto muito mais realista e permitiu posicionar as mangueiras de forma natural ao lado das bombas.

Deixo claro também que eu nunca tive a preocupação de buscar uma reprodução historicamente exata neste conjunto. Muito provavelmente o modelo das bombas de combustível e a placa suspensa pertencem a épocas diferentes da história da Texaco, mas isso nunca foi uma prioridade para mim. Em 2012 eu simplesmente achei que os dois elementos ficavam bonitos juntos e continuo pensando exatamente a mesma coisa hoje.

Espero que este pequeno relançamento permita que novos visitantes conheçam um dos primeiros modelos originais do Papermau e que aqueles que acompanham o blog há muitos anos possam reviver um pedacinho daquela fase inicial, agora em uma versão mais organizada e muito mais fácil de montar.

Steampunk Mansion Papercraft - By Papermau - Coming Next Week!

Today I would like to share a small preview of one of the original models I have been working on over the past few weeks. This Steampunk Mansion is almost finished and, if everything goes according to plan, it should be published here on Papermau sometime next week.

The project combines elements of Victorian architecture with mechanical details such as exposed pipes, gears and weathered metal panels, creating the industrial fantasy atmosphere that is so characteristic of the steampunk universe. The idea was to give the impression of an old building that, over many years, has been expanded, modified and repaired countless times by a group of rather eccentric inventors.

This project actually started out in a very simple way. My original intention was to create just another one-sheet little house, but as I kept adding one detail after another, it almost seemed to grow on its own, gaining towers, chimneys, pipes and all kinds of mechanical details until it became the model you see in these preview images. I think this kind of spontaneous evolution is one of the most enjoyable parts of the creative process because, quite often, the model itself ends up telling me what it still needs.

The templates are now practically finished. Only a few final adjustments and one last review remain before publication. As with all original Papermau models, this one will also be available as a free download.

Hoje gostaria de compartilhar uma pequena prévia de um dos modelos originais em que venho trabalhando nas últimas semanas. Esta Mansão Steampunk está praticamente pronta e, se tudo correr como planejado, deverá ser publicada aqui no Papermau em algum momento da próxima semana.

O projeto combina elementos da arquitetura vitoriana com detalhes mecânicos, como tubulações aparentes, engrenagens e chapas metálicas envelhecidas, criando aquela atmosfera de fantasia industrial típica do universo steampunk. A ideia foi transmitir a impressão de uma construção antiga que, ao longo de muitos anos, recebeu ampliações, adaptações e incontáveis reparos feitos por inventores um tanto excêntricos.

Este projeto começou de forma bastante simples. A intenção era criar apenas mais uma daquelas casinhas de uma folha só, mas, à medida que eu ia acrescentando um detalhe aqui e outro ali, ela foi crescendo quase por conta própria, ganhando torres, chaminés, tubulações e diversos elementos mecânicos, até chegar ao resultado que vocês veem nestas imagens. Acho que esse tipo de evolução espontânea é uma das partes mais divertidas do processo de criação, pois, muitas vezes, é o próprio modelo que acaba dizendo o que ainda falta nele.

Os templates já estão praticamente concluídos. Restam apenas alguns pequenos ajustes e uma última revisão antes da publicação. Como acontece com todos os modelos originais Papermau, este também será disponibilizado gratuitamente para download.
