I am currently working on a new papercraft inspired by an old blueprint of a small garage called J.A. Hawkin Car & Truck Repairs, dated 1909, and in this post I am showing both the original drawing and the model I am developing based on it.
The blueprint presents the front and west elevations of the building, complete with measurements in feet and inches, the tall false front typical of small American towns from the early twentieth century, a manual gas pump, and even a raised Shell Oil tank beside the structure.
It is the kind of simple wooden building with horizontal siding that emerged alongside the first automobiles and trucks as they began appearing beyond major urban centers.
According to the measurements shown in the drawing, the building would have been something between 24 and 30 feet wide and deep, with about 12 to 14 feet in height at the elevated front section.
Converted to 1/64 scale, which is perfect for diecast cars like Hot Wheels and Matchbox, the model ends up approximately 11 to 14 centimeters wide and about 6 centimeters tall. It is compact, but just the right size to become a focal point in a small urban diorama set between 1900 and 1930.
As I studied the blueprint more carefully, I started noticing some interesting details. Even though it is dated 1909 and includes technical measurements, the style of the drawing seems to go beyond a simple construction plan for a real building.
The lettering is perfectly centered and balanced, the brand names such as Shell Oil and Olympic Tyres appear almost like scenic elements placed to tell a story, and the wood shading is rendered with a care that feels more illustrative than purely technical. All of this makes me believe that this blueprint was probably not the exact record of a specific building, but rather a later drawing inspired by real garages from the period, possibly created especially for model railroading or historical illustration.
In my opinion, that only makes it more interesting. It feels designed to capture the essence of a 1909 repair shop, with harmonious proportions and iconic elements that translate beautifully into a scale model.
In the images of this post you can see the original blueprint that serves as the foundation, the 3D model I am building with the main volumes and roof already defined, and also some of the artwork I am creating to turn everything into a proper papercraft, complete with aged wood textures, detailed doors, and the classic painted signage on the façade.
The idea is to preserve the spirit of the original design while adding that Papermau touch, with subtle weathering, a bit of workshop grime, and the feeling of a building that has seen many engines roll through its doors.
There is still plenty of work ahead refining proportions, doors, windows, and the large front gate so everything works well in 1/64 scale, but the model is already starting to develop its own personality.
Soon I will bring more updates about this papercraft and show how it evolves. For now, here are the images of the blueprint, the model in progress, and the artwork that is giving life to this small 1909 garage.
Estou trabalhando em um novo papercraft inspirado em um blueprint antigo de uma pequena oficina chamada J.A. Hawkin Car & Truck Repairs, datada de 1909, e vou mostrar aqui tanto o desenho original quanto o modelo que estou desenvolvendo a partir dele.
O blueprint apresenta a elevação frontal e lateral do prédio, com anotações em pés e polegadas, a fachada com frontão alto típica das pequenas cidades americanas do início do século passado, a bomba de gasolina manual e até um tanque elevado de Shell Oil ao lado.
É o tipo de construção simples, toda em madeira com revestimento em tábuas horizontais, que surgiu junto com os primeiros automóveis e caminhões que começavam a circular fora dos grandes centros.
Pelas medidas indicadas no desenho, o prédio teria algo entre 24 e 30 pés de largura e profundidade, com cerca de 12 a 14 pés de altura na parte frontal mais elevada.
Convertendo para a escala 1/64, que é perfeita para carrinhos como Hot Wheels e Matchbox, o modelo fica com aproximadamente 11 a 14 centímetros de largura e cerca de 6 centímetros de altura. Um tamanho compacto, mas ideal para se destacar em um pequeno diorama urbano ambientado entre 1900 e 1930.
Enquanto analisava o blueprint com mais atenção, comecei a perceber alguns detalhes interessantes. Apesar de estar datado como 1909 e trazer todas as cotas técnicas, o estilo do desenho parece ir além de um simples projeto de construção real.
O letreiro está perfeitamente centralizado e equilibrado, as marcas como Shell Oil e Olympic Tyres aparecem posicionadas quase como elementos de cena, e o sombreamento da madeira tem um cuidado que parece pensado para encantar o observador. Isso me faz acreditar que esse blueprint provavelmente não é o registro exato de um prédio específico, mas sim um desenho criado posteriormente, inspirado em oficinas reais da época, talvez desenvolvido especialmente para modelismo ou ilustração histórica.
Sinceramente, isso só torna o projeto ainda mais interessante. Ele parece ter sido pensado para capturar a essência de uma oficina de 1909, com proporções harmoniosas e elementos icônicos que funcionam muito bem em maquetes.
Nas imagens deste post vocês podem ver o blueprint que está servindo de base, o modelo 3D que estou criando com volume, telhado e fachada já definidos, e também algumas das artes que estou desenvolvendo para transformar tudo em papercraft, com texturas de madeira envelhecida, portas detalhadas e o letreiro clássico na frente.
A ideia é manter o espírito da construção original, mas dar aquele toque Papermau, com leve desgaste, um pouco de sujeira de oficina e aquele ar de prédio que já viu muitos motores passarem pela porta.
Ainda há bastante trabalho pela frente ajustando proporções, portas, janelas e o portão frontal para que tudo funcione bem na escala 1/64, mas o modelo já começa a ganhar personalidade.
