Celebrated on March 17, St. Patrick's Day honors the patron saint of Ireland. In the U.S., the holiday is widely celebrated, especially in cities with a strong Irish heritage, such as Boston, Chicago, and New York, with parades, parties, and the traditional custom of wearing green.
The three-leaf shamrock became associated with the holiday because, according to tradition, St. Patrick used it to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) to pagan Irish people during his mission of evangelization.
