This papercraft, which reproduces the Ponte Vecchio, is part of a series of architectural models that featured buildings from around the world.
The series was called Nationernes Gade ("Street of Nations" in Danish) and was originally published, probably in the late 19th century, in a magazine called Illustreret Familie-Journal.
The subtitle of the series was: "Houses from around the world in small cardboard models."
This papercraft has been preserved and is kindly shared by Esben Rasmussen, a papercraft enthusiast who has made significant contributions to the preservation and digitization of historical cut-out models, including those from Illustreret Familie-Journal.
Ponte Vecchio is one of the most famous bridges in the world, located in Florence, Italy, spanning the Arno River.
Originally built in wood during Roman times, it was rebuilt in stone in the 14th century after being destroyed by a flood.
It is well known for its goldsmith and jeweler shops, which occupy the sides of the bridge, a tradition that dates back to the time of the Medici.
Another curious detail is that Ponte Vecchio was the only bridge in Florence spared by the Nazis during World War II.
Above the bridge's shops, there is a secret passage called the Corridoio Vasariano, built in 1565 by Giorgio Vasari at the request of the Medici family.
It connects the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti, allowing rulers to cross the city without mingling with the public.
In the papercraft presented here, you can clearly see the corridor's windows at the top of the wall with the three doors. More precisely, these are pieces "M" and "L" of the papercraft.
Initially, the shops on Ponte Vecchio were occupied by butchers and leather tanners, but the unpleasant smell bothered the Medici.
In 1593, Grand Duke Ferdinando I ordered that only goldsmiths and jewelers could operate on the bridge, helping to establish its luxurious image.
For years, couples in love attached padlocks to the bridge’s railings and threw the keys into the Arno as a symbol of eternal love.
However, the Florence city government banned this practice, as the padlocks began to damage the structure and obstruct pedestrian flow.
