The Ancient Oyu Lantern - A Japanese Decorative Paper Model
by Ryo

Occupying four sheets of paper, this beautiful decorative paper model of the Oyu Lantern was created by Japanese designer Ryo, from Neko Higeya website.

Oryu Toro is an old wooden lantern that stands along the river in Yanagimachi, and is aptly called a boat landing lantern.

In the old feudal era, the Izushi River was three times as wide as it is today, and the flow of water was abundant.

It is said that 30 boats could go side by side to transport goods, including the annual rice tax. Until the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, these lanterns served as warnings for boats sailing upriver at night.

In 1976, the Oryu Toro Internal was designated as the historic site of the ancient city of Izushi.
