The Perfect Storm - Fishing Vessel Andrea Gail Paper Model by Paper Diorama

Created by the talented design team from the Italian website Paper Diorama, here is a beautiful paper diorama in 1/400 scale representing the fishing boat Andrea Gail facing its likely fateful destiny. 

The entire model occupies only two printed sheets, one for the boat and another for the stand, and despite the tiny pieces, it's not difficult to assemble. Furthermore, if you wish, you can increase the scale when printing. 

The diorama hypothetically shows what may have happened, as there are no exact records of what really occurred with the boat and its crew. 

The fishing boat Andrea Gail was a commercial fishing vessel that gained notoriety due to the tragic fate it faced. In October 1991, during a storm in the Atlantic Ocean, the Andrea Gail and its crew disappeared without a trace. The boat was never found, and all six crew members lost their lives. 

This tragic story was subsequently portrayed in the book "The Perfect Storm," written by Sebastian Junger, and in the 2000 film of the same name directed by Wolfgang Petersen, which detail the events that led to the Andrea Gail's tragedy.

The book describes how the boat and its crew were hit by an intense storm, considered the "Perfect Storm" due to the combination of different meteorological factors that made it extremely violent.

The fate of the Andrea Gail became a symbol of the dangers faced by fishermen who venture into turbulent and stormy waters, especially in the North Atlantic region.

In the video just below, you can see a scene from the 2000 movie showing the spectacular wave that inspired the Paper Diorama team to create this papercraft.

Criado pela talentosa equipe de designers do site italiano Paper Diorama, eis aqui um belo diorama de papel na escala 1/400 representando o barco pesqueiro Andrea Gail enfrentando seu provável fatídico destino.

O modelo todo ocupa apenas duas folhas impressas, uma para o barco e outra para o stand e, apesar das peças diminutas, não é difícil de montar. Além do mais, se você quiser, pode aumentar a escala na hora de imprimir. 

O diorama mostra hipoteticamente o que pode ter acontecido, já que não há registros exatos do que realmente ocorreu com o barco e sua tripulação.

O pesqueiro Andrea Gail era um barco de pesca comercial que ganhou notoriedade devido ao trágico destino que enfrentou. Em outubro de 1991, durante uma tempestade no Oceano Atlântico, o Andrea Gail e sua tripulação desapareceram sem deixar vestígios. O barco nunca foi encontrado e todos os seis membros da tripulação perderam a vida.

Essa história trágica foi posteriormente retratada no livro "The Perfect Storm" (A Tempestade Perfeita), escrito por Sebastian Junger, e no filme de mesmo nome lançado em 2000, dirigido por Wolfgang Petersen, que detalham os eventos que levaram à tragédia do Andrea Gail.

O livro descreve como o barco e sua tripulação foram atingidos por uma tempestade intensa, considerada a "Tempestade Perfeita" devido à combinação de diferentes fatores meteorológicos que a tornaram extremamente violenta.

O destino do Andrea Gail se tornou um símbolo dos perigos enfrentados por pescadores que se aventuram em águas turbulentas e tempestuosas, especialmente na região do Atlântico Norte.

The Ephemeral Museum - Bridge and Deck Of The USS Gerald R. Ford In 1/72 Scale - by Luiz Leopoldo

Mr. Luiz Leopoldo is a modeling enthusiast here in Brazil who sent me some photos of a beautiful project he completed based on an original model by the Japanese designer and modeler Masahiro Kushima from the Paper Model Studio website. 

Mr. Leopoldo enlarged this aircraft carrier, focusing only on the bridge and the rear deck, at a 1/72 scale. 

I asked him to write a few lines for this post, and he kindly provided the following text: 

"As an aviation enthusiast for several decades, I saw the expanded construction of the CVN-78 as a challenge. I focus more on reading about the subject, consulting, and translating various aviation magazines. 

As for papercraft, I had seen it on the internet before, with some websites offering these models for download and assembly, but I had never had an interest in delving into the subject. 

About six months ago, I downloaded the papercraft file for the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), which I found very interesting. From there, I started imagining how to assemble it, but in a 1:72 scale, as I had seen others do with the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, which is on display at the Musée de l’Air in Le Bourget, Paris, France, and others that appeared in FineScale magazine. So, I took the initiative to build the bridge of the USS Gerald R. Ford. 

Using the scaling factor of 4.8611, obtained by dividing 350 by 72, I began printing the sheets of the bridge of interest, improving the print quality by using 300 DPI. I printed everything on A4 paper, and I printed a portion of an image on adhesive paper to later attach it to cardboard. 

If you have access to a plotter and adhesive paper, it would make the process much easier. The rest involves creativity, patience, calm, and hard work to achieve the final result. It's a challenge I enjoyed, and there are already others in progress."

This 1/350 scale model, which is both free and enormous, measuring approximately 1 meter in length once assembled, was previously featured on the blog in 2021. For those who may have missed it, the link to download the model is provided at the end of this post.

O Sr. Luiz Leopoldo é um amigo modelista aqui do Brasil que enviou-me algumas fotos de um belo trabalho que ele fez sobre um modelo original do designer e modelista japonês Masahiro Kushima, do site Paper Model Studio. 

O Sr. Luiz fez uma ampliação desse porta-aviões, mas somente da ponte e do convés traseiro, na escala 1/72. 

Pedi a ele que escrevesse alguma slinhas para este post e ele gentilmente enviou-me o texto abaixo: 

"Sendo entusiasta de aviação, já a algumas décadas, vi como um desafio a construção ampliada do CVN-78. Me dedico mais a ler sobre o assunto, consultando e traduzindo várias revistas de aviação. 

Quanto ao assunto papercraft, já tinha visto antes na internet, alguns site que dispõe esses modelos para abaixar e montar, mas nunca tive interesse em mergulhar no assunto. 

Uns seis meses atrás, eu abaixei o arquivo papercraft do USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), na qual eu achei muito interessante, e dai fiquei imaginando como seria montar ele, mas na escala 1:72, na qual já tinha visto outras pessoas fazerem isso com o porta-aviões USS Enterprise, na qual tem um no Musée de l’Air, em Le Bourget, em Paris, na França, e outros, que apareceu na revista FineScale. Então tomei a iniciativa de montar a ponte do USS Gerald R. Ford. 

Usando o valor de 4,8611, para ampliação, dividindo 350 por 72. Comecei a imprimir as folhas de interesse da ponte, mas melhorando a qualidade da impressão, usando 300ppp, tudo impresso em impressora A4, imprimindo em folha adesiva parte de uma imagem, para depois colar em cartolina. 

Se tiver como imprimir em plotter com folha adesiva, facilitaria muito mais. O resto é criatividade, paciência, calma e trabalho, para obter esse resultado final. Um desafio que gostei, e já tem outros a caminho..."

About the Ephemeral Museum:

I "am in the paper modeling" since 2005, although I've had contact with paper models from my childhood in the 1970s, via magazines that were sold sporadically in newsagents. 

I remember magazines with houses to build and dioramas/playsets of airports, western forts, nativity scenes and the like. 

With the advent of the internet what happened was simply a revival of the papercraft hobby for me and many other people of my generation. 

Today I am opening a new session here on the blog, the Ephemeral Museum , which is a place where I will show some of the models that I built all these years.

I would also like this to be a space where all modelers friends could show their work, so if anyone wants to participate in this "museum", just send photos of your work and a few words, if you want, to the e-mail:

Eu "estou no papelmodelismo" desde 2005, embora eu já tivesse contato com modelos de papel desde minha infância, nos anos 1970, via revistas que eram vendidas esporadicamente em bancas de jornal. 

Lembro que haviam revistas com casas para montar e dioramas/playsets de aeroportos, fortes-apache, presépios e coisas do tipo. 

Com o advento da internet o que houve foi simplesmente um renascimento do hobby do papelmodelismo para mim e muitas outras pessoas de minha geração. 

Hoje eu estou inaugurando uma nova sessão aqui no blog, o Ephemeral Museum, que é um lugar aonde irei mostrar alguns dos modelos que eu construí em todos estes anos.

Easy-To-Build Pirate Ship Papercraft For Kids - by So Bastelst Du

"This easy-to-assemble papercraft of a pirate ship called Krumme Kaatje is offered by the German website So Bastelst Du. 

The Krumme Kaatje occupies three printed sheets, and when assembled, it measures 22 cm in height, 10 cm in width, and 22 cm in length.

O Krumme Kaatje ocupa três folhas impressas e quando montado mede 22 cms de altura, 10 cms de largura e 22 cms de comprimento.

Amazonian River Boat Paper Model - by Papermau - Download Now!

I drew this boat in 2018, and lacking a better name, I decided to call it the Amazonian River Boat. I drew it and ended up forgetting the sketches in some folder on my computer. 

While digging through my hard drive, I stumbled upon the Sketchup and Pepakura templates. So, I decided to finish it. 

With a week and a half delay, here is the paper model of the Amazonian River Boat, ready for download. 

The final template consists of 53 pieces divided into six sheets. I've labeled the pieces with letters, so assembly is straightforward: each piece fits with another piece named with the same letter. 

To make assembly easier, I've created a sheet with illustrated instructions, so I believe anyone who is genuinely interested in assembling it won't encounter many difficulties. 

As I mentioned in the previous post, I used 180g recycled paper that has a color resembling burnt cement, giving the model a nice appearance. 

This weight of paper provides the boat with a strong structure, but I think 150g or even 120g should suffice. 

Later this week, I will try to post some photos I took while assembling the model. Have fun!

Eu desenhei este barco em 2018 e que, na falta de um nome melhor, resolvi chamá-lo de barco do Rio Amazonas. Eu o desenhei e acabei esquecendo os rascunhos em alguma pasta aqui no meu computador. 

Vasculhando o HD, acabei encontrando os templates em Sketchup e Pepakura. Resolvi então terminá-lo. 

Com uma semana e meia de atraso eis aqui o modelo de papel do Amazonian River Boat, pronto para download. 

O template final é composto de 53 peças divididas em seis folhas. Marquei as peças com letras, então a montagem é simples: cada peça se encaixa com outra peça nomeada com a mesma letra. 

Para facilitar a montagem eu fiz uma folha com instruções ilustradas, então creio que quem realmente se interessar em montar, não encontrará muitas dificuldades. 

Como eu havia dito na postagem anterior, eu usei papel reciclado de gramatura 180 que tem uma cor que se assemelha a cimento queimado e deu uma aparência bem legal ao modelo. 

Essa gramatura faz com que o barco tenha uma estrutura bem forte, mas creio que 150 ou mesmo 120 gramas já sejam o bastante. 

Ainda essa semana tentarei postar algumas fotos que tirei enquanto montava o modelo. Boa montagem!

Amazonian River Boat Paper Model - The Test Build - by Papermau

Here are the first photos of the test build, or beta, of the Amazonian River Boat. I'll try to publish it by Sunday, but the truth is that I'm still struggling with some parts to make the model less complicated at the time of assembly. 

Anyway, it was good to know that the model is "buildable" and that all the parts fit in their proper places. 

I used 180-weight recycled paper which has a color that resembles burnt cement and gave the model a really nice look.

This grammage makes the boat have a very strong structure, but I believe that 150 or even 120 grams are enough. More soon.

Aqui estão as primeiras fotos da montagem de teste, ou beta, do Amazonian River Boat. Eu vou tentar publicá-lo até domingo, mas a verdade é que eu ainda estou brigando com algumas peças para fazer o modelo menos complicado na hora da montagem. 

De qualquer forma, foi bom saber que o modelo é "montável" e que todas as peças se encaixam em seus devidos lugares.
