An Old Rusty Chevy ’52 Pickup - My First Hot Wheels Custom Project

This small rusty Chevy ’52 is my very first attempt at customizing a Hot Wheels diecast car. The original model used here was a 2006 Hot Wheels Hot Rod Shop ’52 Chevy, which originally had a clean glossy paint job and several decorative decals.

The first thing I did was disassemble the pickup, exactly as I had seen in some YouTube videos: using a thin metal drill bit and a lot of patience, I carefully “removed” the two rivets on the underside and separated the vehicle into three parts: the body, the red transparent windshield and windows piece and the base with the wheels.

Before even starting the painting process, I decided to lower the pickup, and that turned out to be much easier than I expected. I simply sanded the wheel supports a little and that alone was enough to give the truck a lower and more aggressive stance. I also thought about making rubber tires, but the tutorials I found looked a bit too complicated and required heat guns and other materials that I did not have at hand. So, at least for now, I decided to keep the original wheels.

The next step was removing the original decals using a cotton swab soaked in acetone. Then, using cotton also soaked in acetone, I managed to remove most of the original clear coat from the model, leaving the white paint looking duller, worn and slightly faded by time.

And then came the most fun part of the whole experience. I used red acrylic paint applied manually with a regular brush, giving the entire model two coats. After letting it dry properly for two days, I covered everything with a coat of matte black acrylic paint, also applied with a brush.

After another two days of drying time, I started the process that truly created the final effect. Once again using cotton swabs soaked in acetone, I carefully removed parts of the black and red paint. Little by little, with the mixture of those two colors reacting with the acetone, the rusty effect began to appear in a completely unpredictable and organic way.

The final result was exactly what I had imagined: an old pickup forgotten for twenty years inside a damp leaking barn. Almost like those abandoned vehicles sometimes found hidden behind old garages or forgotten rural farms.

Honestly, I enjoyed the experience so much that I am already thinking about future customs. I think I may have just discovered another hobby inside the hobby.

Este pequeno Chevy ’52 enferrujado é minha primeira tentativa de customização de um carrinho Hot Wheels. O modelo original usado aqui foi um Hot Wheels Hot Rod Shop ’52 Chevy, lançado em 2006, que originalmente tinha pintura limpa, brilhante e vários adesivos decorativos.

A primeira coisa que fiz foi desmontar a pickup, fazendo exatamente como vi em alguns vídeos no YouTube: com uma broca de ferro fina e muito cuidado, “desfiz” os dois rebites da parte inferior e desmontei o veículo em três partes: a carroceria, o acrílico vermelho do para-brisa e janelas e a base com as rodas.

Antes mesmo de começar a pintura, resolvi rebaixar a pickup, e isso acabou sendo bem mais fácil do que eu imaginava. Apenas desgastei um pouco os suportes das rodas e isso já foi suficiente para dar ao carrinho uma aparência mais baixa e agressiva. Pensei também em fazer pneus de borracha, mas os tutoriais que encontrei me pareceram um pouco complicados demais e exigiam pistola de calor e outros materiais que eu não tinha em mãos. Então, pelo menos por enquanto, decidi manter as rodas originais mesmo.

O próximo passo foi remover os adesivos originais utilizando um cotonete embebido em acetona. Depois, usando algodão também umedecido com acetona, consegui retirar boa parte do verniz original do carrinho, deixando a pintura branca com um aspecto mais opaco, gasto e levemente desbotado pelo tempo.

E então começou a parte mais divertida da experiência. Usei tinta acrílica vermelha aplicada manualmente com pincel comum, passando duas demãos em todo o modelo. Após deixar secar bem por dois dias, cobri tudo com uma camada de tinta acrílica preta fosca, também aplicada com pincel.

Mais dois dias de secagem depois, comecei o processo que realmente criou o efeito final. Novamente utilizando cotonetes embebidos em acetona, fui removendo cuidadosamente partes da tinta preta e da tinta vermelha. Aos poucos, com a mistura dessas duas cores com a acetona, o efeito ferruginoso começou a aparecer de forma totalmente imprevisível e orgânica.

O resultado foi exatamente o que eu queria: uma velha pickup esquecida durante vinte anos dentro de um celeiro úmido e cheio de goteiras. Quase como aqueles veículos abandonados que às vezes aparecem escondidos atrás de oficinas antigas ou fazendas esquecidas no interior.

Sinceramente, gostei tanto da experiência que já estou pensando nos próximos customs. Acho que acabei descobrindo mais um hobby dentro do hobby.

Astro Racer 666 Supernatural Impala Jet Papercraft - by Jan Rükr

This curious and hilariously fun papercraft of the Impala Jet was created by the talented Czech designer Jan Rükr, from the Aliens Papercraft website, and is directly inspired by the legendary 1967 Chevrolet Impala driven by brothers Sam and Dean Winchester in the classic TV series Supernatural.

But here the famous “Baby” received a full retro sci-fi makeover: it became a kind of turbocharged space fighter, ready to win intergalactic races and, between one race and another, travel across galaxies hunting demons, ghosts and interdimensional creatures.

The model is part of the huge Astro Racers series created by Jan Rükr, a collection packed with futuristic spaceships and vehicles. According to the author himself, this model spent an unbelievable fourteen years waiting to finally be released. Fortunately, he decided to pull it out of the cosmic garage before Dean Winchester showed up complaining about it.

In the text presented by the author, he explains that the ship was completely rebuilt by Dean using original parts while keeping the old propulsion system based on the “Van Horn mixer with thrust vectoring.” All of this gives the model that delicious 1950s and 1960s science fiction atmosphere, as if someone had mixed American hot rods, classic rockets and old late-night space TV shows together.

The papercraft is available for free as a PDF file containing only two sheets and a total of 17 numbered parts, making it a relatively simple model and accessible even for beginners in the hobby. The author recommends printing it on paper between 120 and 160 g/m² and reinforcing some parts using thicker 200 g/m² paper.

And honestly? There is something wonderfully absurd about turning a supernatural muscle car into a futuristic racing spaceship. It is exactly this kind of limitless creativity that makes the papercraft universe so much fun.

Este curioso e divertidíssimo papercraft do Impala Jet foi criado pelo talentoso designer tcheco Jan Rükr, do site Aliens Papercraft, e é inspirado diretamente no lendário Chevrolet Impala 1967 dirigido pelos irmãos Sam e Dean Winchester na clássica série de TV.

Mas aqui o famoso “Baby” recebeu uma transformação digna de ficção científica retrô: virou uma espécie de caça espacial turboalimentado, pronto para ganhar corridas e entre uma corrida e outra cruzar galáxias caçando demônios, fantasmas, criaturas interdimensionais.

O modelo faz parte da enorme série “Astro Racers”, criada por Jan Rükr, uma coleção cheia de naves e veículos futuristas. Segundo o próprio autor, este modelo ficou inacreditáveis quatorze anos esperando para finalmente ser publicado. Felizmente ele resolveu tirá-lo da garagem cósmica antes que Dean Winchester aparecesse reclamando. 

No texto apresentado pelo autor, ele explica que a nave foi totalmente reconstruída por Dean utilizando peças originais e mantendo o antigo sistema de propulsão baseado no “misturador Van Horn com direcionador de empuxo”. Tudo isso dá ao modelo aquele delicioso clima de ficção científica dos anos 1950 e 1960, como se alguém tivesse misturado hot rods americanos, foguetes clássicos e episódios antigos de seriados espaciais exibidos tarde da noite na televisão. 

O papercraft é disponibilizado gratuitamente em arquivo PDF contendo apenas duas folhas e um total de 17 peças numeradas, o que o torna um modelo relativamente simples e acessível até mesmo para iniciantes no hobby. O autor recomenda imprimir em papel entre 120 e 160 g/m² e reforçar algumas partes utilizando papel mais grosso de 200 g/m². 

E sinceramente? Existe algo maravilhosamente absurdo na ideia de transformar um muscle car sobrenatural em uma nave espacial de corrida. É exatamente aquele tipo de criatividade sem limites que faz o universo do papercraft ser tão divertido.

ZOOMIE XD1 - Retro-Futuristic One-Sheet Space Vehicle Papercraft by Space Gooose

Created by the talented artist and designer known as space gooose, this little paper space vehicle called "ZOOMIE XD1" is one of those simple but extremely charismatic papercrafts that immediately catch the eye. Presented in six different colors plus an additional black-and-white version for you to color however you like, the model features a very striking retro-futuristic look, reminiscent at the same time of small flying cars, compact patrol ships and those stylized futuristic vehicles commonly seen in science fiction movies and animated productions from the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The entire model fits on a single printed sheet and seems to have been intentionally designed to be quick and fun to assemble. Even so, it still includes several nice little details, such as side wings, visible rear thrusters, an illustrated cockpit and subtle weathering effects that give the vehicle that classic “used future” appearance so common in traditional sci-fi universes.

One particularly charming detail is the tiny cat pilot (or perhaps some kind of alien creature?) visible through the cockpit window, giving the model a fun and friendly personality. The hand-drawn textures and sketch-like lines further reinforce the experimental and artistic nature of the project, making the model look like something taken directly from an indie animated movie or a concept art sketchbook.

According to the author himself, this papercraft started as a small creative experiment and, honestly, the final result turned out really good. Models like this show that a papercraft does not necessarily need to be large or extremely complex to be interesting and enjoyable. Sometimes a clever design, appealing colors and a strong visual identity are already more than enough.

If you enjoy small sci-fi vehicles, retro-futuristic aesthetics, independent concept art or simply easy-to-build papercrafts full of personality, the ZOOMIE XD1 is definitely worth downloading.

Criado pelo talentoso artista e designer conhecido como space gooose, este pequeno veículo espacial de papel chamado "ZOOMIE XD1" é daqueles papercrafts simples, mas extremamente carismáticos, que chamam a atenção imediatamente. Apresentado em seis cores diferentes e mais uma versão em preto e branco para você colorir do jeito que quiser, o modelo possui um visual retrofuturista muito marcante, lembrando ao mesmo tempo pequenos carros voadores, naves compactas de patrulha e aqueles veículos estilizados típicos dos filmes e animações de ficção científica do final dos anos 1970 e começo dos anos 1980.

Todo o modelo ocupa apenas uma folha impressa e parece ter sido pensado justamente para ser rápido e divertido de montar. Mesmo assim, ele traz vários pequenos detalhes interessantes, como asas laterais, propulsores traseiros aparentes, cockpit ilustrado e leves efeitos de desgaste que dão ao veículo aquele aspecto de “futuro usado”, muito no estilo dos universos clássicos da ficção científica.

Um detalhe particularmente simpático é o pequeno gato piloto (ou será uma criatura alienígena?) visível através da janela do cockpit, dando ao modelo uma personalidade divertida e amigável. As texturas desenhadas à mão e os traços com aparência de sketch reforçam ainda mais o caráter experimental e artístico do projeto, fazendo o modelo parecer algo saído diretamente de um filme indie de animação ou de um caderno de concept art.

Segundo o próprio autor, este papercraft surgiu como uma pequena experiência criativa e, sinceramente, o resultado ficou muito bom. Modelos assim mostram que um papercraft não precisa necessariamente ser grande ou extremamente complexo para ser interessante e divertido. Às vezes, um design inteligente, boas cores e uma identidade visual forte já são mais do que suficientes.

Se você gosta de pequenos veículos sci-fi, estética retrofuturista, concept art independente ou simplesmente modelos fáceis de montar cheios de personalidade, o ZOOMIE XD1 certamente vale o download.

Restaurants Around The World - 03 - Japanese Restaurant Papercraft by Papermau - Download Now!

This is the third model in the "Restaurants Around The World" series created by Papermau. After the English Pub and the American Diner, now it is time for this small Japanese restaurant filled with lanterns, colorful posters, arcade machines and that slightly nostalgic atmosphere of Japan’s illuminated streets.

The idea behind this series is to create small restaurants, bars, pubs, cafés and snack shops inspired by the most traditional and iconic foods from different countries around the world, always in a compact format, occupying just one printed sheet and featuring an easy assembly suitable even for beginners in the hobby. Each model tries to represent not only the typical cuisine of a country, but also a little of its visual and cultural atmosphere through façades, shop windows, signs, posters, colors and other small details characteristic of each place.

Depending on the country represented, some models in this collection will be pubs, diners, taverns, cafés, street bars or small local restaurants, always trying to capture that characteristic look that immediately makes us recognize each culture. All models in the series will follow this compact urban mini diorama style that I enjoy creating here at Papermau, with vibrant colors, lots of illustrated details and a fun appearance once assembled.

The idea for this model was to create something simple to build, but enjoyable to look at once finished. Even though it occupies only one printed sheet, I tried to include many small details to make the restaurant feel more alive and interesting for dioramas, model railroads, RPG tables or simply as a shelf decoration.

For this model, I created the lanterns in two different ways. One version is simpler and completely two-dimensional, for those who prefer a faster and more practical assembly, while the second version is a six-sided 3D design that requires a little more patience, but creates a much more beautiful final result. The lanterns used in the virtually assembled model shown in the images of this post are exactly the 3D version.

Depois do English Pub e do American Diner, agora chegou a vez deste pequeno restaurante japonês cheio de lanternas, pôsteres coloridos, máquinas de arcade e aquele clima meio nostálgico das ruas iluminadas do Japão.

A ideia desta série é criar pequenos restaurantes, bares, pubs, cafés e lanchonetes inspirados nas comidas mais tradicionais e icônicas de diferentes países ao redor do mundo, sempre em formato compacto, ocupando apenas uma folha impressa e com montagem simples, acessível até mesmo para iniciantes no hobby. Cada modelo procura representar não apenas a culinária típica de um país, mas também um pouco da atmosfera visual e cultural desses lugares, através das fachadas, vitrines, cartazes, cores e pequenos detalhes característicos de cada cultura.

Dependendo do país retratado, alguns modelos desta coleção serão pubs, diners, tavernas, cafés, botecos ou pequenos restaurantes de rua, sempre tentando capturar aquele visual típico que nos faz reconhecer imediatamente cada lugar. Todos os modelos seguirão esse estilo compacto de mini diorama urbano que eu gosto de criar aqui no Papermau, com muitas cores, pequenos detalhes ilustrados e uma aparência divertida depois de montados.

A ideia deste modelo foi criar algo simples de montar, mas divertido de observar depois de pronto. Apesar de ocupar apenas uma folha impressa, tentei colocar vários pequenos detalhes para deixar o restaurante mais vivo e interessante em dioramas, ferromodelismo, mesas de RPG ou simplesmente como decoração de estante.

Neste modelo eu fiz as lanternas de duas maneiras diferentes. Uma versão mais simples, totalmente em 2D, para quem prefere uma montagem mais rápida e prática, e outra versão em 3D, com seis lados, que dá um pouco mais de trabalho, mas deixa o resultado muito mais bonito. As lanternas do modelo virtualmente montado que aparecem nas imagens deste post são justamente a versão 3D.

Over 60 Free Architectural Papercrafts In 1/100 Scale - by Felis Lynx Now On Telegram

Back in 2021, when I first featured the amazing architectural papercraft collection created by the Russian team from Felis Lynx, the project already impressed me with its originality, realism and generosity. At that time there were only 18 models available, all based on real architectural projects and offered completely free for download.

Years passed and the collection continued to grow steadily. In 2025, I revisited the project here on the blog when the number of models had already reached an incredible 63 buildings, ranging from charming countryside houses to modern residences and elegant urban constructions, all designed in a beautiful 1/100 scale style with very clean and professional graphics.

Now the good people from Felis Lynx have kindly contacted me once again to share another great piece of news with the papercraft community: all models are also available through their official Telegram channel, making access even easier for hobbyists around the world.

According to the creators themselves, all house project models can now be downloaded completely free and without the need for registration, something increasingly rare nowadays and certainly worthy of recognition and praise.

For those who still do not know this fantastic collection, it is truly worth a visit. The models are perfect for architectural studies, dioramas, model railroads, RPG and wargames, or simply for anyone who appreciates beautifully designed paper architecture. The clean textures, realistic proportions and wide variety of styles make this one of the most interesting architectural papercraft collections currently available online.

According to recommendations provided by the creators on the official website, the models are supplied in PDF format and designed for A4 paper size. The recommended paper weight is 200 gsm for the best results and structural stability. For proper scale and fitting, the files should be printed without resizing.

I would also like to thank the Felis Lynx team for their kindness, generosity and continued support of the papercraft community throughout all these years. Projects like this help keep the hobby alive, accessible and inspiring for paper modelers all around the world.
