Orion (officially Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle or Orion MPCV) is a class of partially reusable crewed spacecraft to be used in NASA's Artemis program.
The spacecraft consists of a Crew Module (CM) space capsule designed by Lockheed Martin and the European Service Module (ESM) manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space. The Orion spacecraft will launch aboard the Space Launch System (SLS).
Together they will serve USA next generation exploration vehicles transporting humans to asteroids, the moon, Lagrange points –– and ultimately to Mars. NASA’s Orion spacecraft is built to take humans farther than they’ve ever gone before.
Orion will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel, and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. Orion will launch on NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System.
