A Little Quarantine Diary - Day 6 Um Pequeno Diário da Quarentena - Dia 6

Good night to all friends of the blog,

I decided to illustrate this little diary with random old images, just to color this space a little, after all I am a very visual person and this whole blog revolves around images, shapes and colors.

I went to sleep with the day already clear and woke up very late today. All of us here are a little bored and anxious, always waiting for new news about the virus, about treatments, numbers of contaminated and fatal victims. Here in São Paulo, a hospital is testing a treatment with a drug created in the 1940s and originally made to fight malaria. Today is Monday and we intend not to leave home until Thursday, unless it is really necessary. The peak of the cases of COVID 19 here in Brazil will occur more or less in the middle of April, so those infected at this time will have been contaminated exactly in the days of this week now. So the concern to stay safe this week. An attempt to slow the rising curve of the virus.

I have a lot of time now, but creativity is kind of stuck. I tried to draw and even played a little on Sketchup. The shapes come out easy, but lack the courage to do anything more complex, with adding textures and unfolding the models. I will have to discipline myself. A saying that goes well with the moment: "Empty head is the devil's workshop".

Boa noite aos amigos do blog,

Eu decidi ilustrar este pequeno diário com imagens antigas aleatórias, apenas para colorir um pouco este espaço, afinal eu sou uma pessoa muito visual e todo este blog gira em torno de imagens, formas e cores.

Fui dormir com o dia já claro e acordei bem tarde hoje. Todos nós aqui estamos um pouco entediados e ansiosos, esperando sempre novas notícias sobre o vírus, sobre tratamentos e números de contaminados e vítimas fatais. Aqui em São Paulo, um hospital está testando um tratamento com um remédio criado na década de 1940 e feito originalmente para combater a malária. Hoje é segunda-feira e pretendemos não sair até quinta-feira, a não ser que seja realmente necessário. O ápice dos casos de COVID 19 aqui no Brasil se darão mais ou menos no meio de Abril, então os infectados nesta época terão se contaminado exatamente nos dias desta semana agora. Por isso a preocupação em nos mantermos seguros esta semana. Uma tentativa de diminuir a curva ascendente do vírus.

Tenho muito tempo agora, mas a criatividade está meio travada. Tentei desenhar e até brinquei um pouco no Sketchup. As formas saem fácil, mas falta ânimo para fazer qualquer coisa mais complexa, com adicionar texturas e desdobrar dos modelos. Vou ter que me disciplinar. Um ditado que combina bem com o momento: "Cabeça vazia é oficina do diabo".

Mais um dia. Fiquem bem e se cuidem. Nos vemos amanhã.

A Little Quarantine Diary - Day 5 Um Pequeno Diário da Quarentena - Dia 5

Here we are, on the fifth day of quarantine, or social isolation, whatever. The most important people in this world are here with me, so it is not so difficult for me to stay at home. For now we have food, water, electricity and internet, so for now this quarantine is quite bearable. I hope that you, friends of the blog, are also with your loved ones and that you will find ways to live in harmony during this time of trial.

Here we try to maintain normalcy and avoid arguments for trivial reasons. Today, Sunday, we had a small barbecue to relieve tension and lift the spirits. I once read in a book (Nothing New on the Front, by Erick Maria Remarque) that if there was more food and more hours of sleep in the war, it would not be so unbearable. Well, for now we have food and we also have as many hours of sleep as we want, so looking at it this way, it doesn't look so bad. One of the tricks to keep your spirits up is to try to see the best side of things.

Well, today we are going to watch some movies, talk, tell old family stories, laugh and be serious. Maybe we'll fight a little say a few things that need to be said, but in the end, we'll all be fine.

Aqui estamos nós, no quinto dia da quarentena, ou isolamento social, tanto faz. As pessoas mais importantes nesse mundo estão aqui comigo, então para mim não é tão difícil ficar em casa. Por enquanto temos comida, água, lenergia elétrica e internet, então por enquanto está bem suportável essa quarentena. Espero que vocês, amigos do blog, também estejam com os seus entes queridos e que vocês encontrem maneiras de conviverem em harmonia durante esse período de provação.

Aqui tentamos manter a normalidade e evitamos discussões por motivos banais. Hoje, domingo, fizemos um pequeno churrasco para aliviar a tensão e elevar o ânimo. Uma vez li em um livro (Nada de Novo no Front, de Erick Maria Remarque) que se na guerra houvesse mais comida e mais horas de sono, ela não seria tão insuportável. Bem, por enquanto temos comida e também dispomos de quantas horas de sono quisermos, então, olhando por esse lado, não parece tão ruim. Um dos truques para manter o ânimo é tentar ver o melhor lado das coisas.

Bem, hoje vamos assistir alguns filmes, conversar, contar velhas histórias de família, riremos e falaremos sério. Talvez briguemos um pouco e falaremos algumas coisas que estão engasgadas, mas no final, ficaremos todos bem.

Fiquem bem, se cuidem, não baixem a guarda! Amanhã nos vemos novamente.

A Little Quarantine Diary - Days 1, 2, 3, 4Um Pequeno Diário da Quarentena - Dias 1, 2, 3, 4

Hello to all friends of the blog,

Today I decided to start a quarantine diary, a short daily report of how things are here in Brazil, more precisely in the far east of the city of São Paulo, where I live. I have to explain to the rest of Brazil and to friends from the rest of the world that here where I live it is an area further from the capital and perhaps for that reason, a less privileged and assisted by the State. There are many favelas, popular housing estates, dorm town and the population here is predominantly B, C and D. We are on the fourth day of the quarantine and with the exception of supermarkets, pharmacies and gas stations, commerce in general has stopped working since yesterday. Today is a Saturday and traffic is much less than normal, but people seem to be driving faster and are more stressed behind the wheel. In the afternoon I went with my daughter Maiu to a popular supermarket close to home. It is a medium-sized market, designed to serve the residents of the neighborhood. For now everything looks normal, the shelves are still full and the movement of people is slightly below normal for a Saturday.

The streets have few people and even the informal commerce (street vendors) is closed. At home we don't have anyone infected. We try to get out as little as possible, just for essential things: buying food, water and medicines. At home we try to keep ourselves busy and avoid arguments over silly things. It is very easy to lose your temper when we are confined. We have books, dogs to care for and play with (and how these unconditional friends help), we have the internet with all the information of the world and the blessed streaming services (Netflix, Amazon and HBO) and video games (I like PS4 and my daughters prefer Nintendo).

I hope that all of you who access the blog, here in Brazil and around the world, are doing well and keep it up. Please take care. Do not expose yourself unnecessarily and do not spread the virus. See you tomorrow.

Olá para todos os amigos do blog,

Hoje resolvi começar um diário da quarentena, um curto relato diário sobre como estão as coisas aqui no Brasil, mais precisamente no extremo leste da cidade de São Paulo, onde resido. Tenho que explicar para o resto do Brasil e aos amigos do resto do mundo que aqui onde vivo é uma área mais afastada da capital e talvez por isso, um local menos privilegiado e assistido pelo Estado. Há muitas favelas, conjuntos habitacionais populares, bairros dormitórios e a população aqui é predominantemente B, C e D. Estamos no quarto dia da quarentena e com excessão de supermercados, farmácias e postos de combustíveis, o comércio em geral deixou de funcionar desde ontém. Hoje é um sábado e o trânsito está bem menor que o normal, mas as pessoas parecem dirigir mais depressa e estão mais estressadas ao volante. À tarde fui com minha filha Maiú a um supermercado popular aqui perto de casa. É um mercado de tamanho médio, feito para atender aos moradores do bairro. Por enquanto tudo parece normal, as prateleiras continuam cheias e o movimento de pessoas está um pouco abaixo do normal para um sábado.

As ruas têm poucas pessoas e mesmo o comércio informal (camelôs) está fechado. Em casa não temos ninguém infectado. Tentamos sair o mínimo possível, apenas para coisas essenciais: compra de alimentos, água e medicamentos. Tentamos nos manter ocupados e evitar discussões por coisas tolas. É muito fácil perder a calma quando estamos confinados. Temos livros, os cães para cuidar e brincar (e como ajudam estes amigos incondicionais), temos a internet com toda a informação do mundo e os benditos serviços de streaming (Netflix, Amazon and HBO) a também os videogames (eu gosto do PS4 e minhas filhas preferem Nintendo).

Espero que vocês todos que acessam o blog, aqui do Brasil e do mundo todo, estejam bem e continuem assim. Por favor, cuidem-se. Não se exponham desnecessariamente e não propaguem o vírus. Até amanhã.
