This beautiful and rare playset, or diorama, which depicts the "The Visit of Sultan Barberose to Jade Flower, the Beautiful Princess", was created almost a hundred years ago, in 1925, by the French artist Jack Roberts, probably for the publisher A. Tolmer.
Composed of four sheets, the set features:
sheet 01: The sultan, two servants and his royal elephant.
sheet 02: The entourage of the sultan's servants with presents to the princess.
sheet 03: The princess and her magnificent clothes.
sheet 04: The princess's throne and her ladies-in-waiting.
Jack Roberts (1894-1963) was a French designer, painter and engraver. Student of Fine Arts in Paris between 1913 and 1914, he continued his training in London.
After the First World War he designed posters and textiles and decorated children's playrooms on the ocean liners "Jean-Laborde" and "Félix-Roussel". He illustrated catalogs for L'Illustration, Galeries Lafayette and Le Printemps, and also illustrated many children's albums.
His design is simple and marked by the aesthetics of "Art Deco" and his albums are representative of the abundant activity of the famous publisher A. Tolmer during the decades from 1920 to 1930.
Although there are some works by Jack Roberts on display at The Metropolitan Museum in New York, the museum's official website says that "little is known about Roberts except that he appears to have produced a variety of advertising materials for the Galeries Lafayette department store in Paris. The name may be a pseudonym for another designer."
The dates of birth and death on the website are also different: 1876–1955. It seems that the museum staff or his interns are not very committed to their work...

Jack Roberts (1894-1963) foi um designer, pintor e gravador francês. Estudante de Belas Artes em Paris entre 1913 e 1914, continuou a sua formação em Londres.
