Le Bateau Sous-Marin - A French Vintage Paper Model
by Imagerie d'Epinal - Assembled by Thumb Dog

It is amazing how complex models like this, made at a time when there were no graphics or computer programs, can be so perfect fittings, probably made at the expense of many mathematical calculations. I do not know the exact date, but I believe that this vintage paper model of a submarine of the early days of underwater exploration, printed by the French publisher Imagerie d'Epinal, was originally published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The model, masterfully assembled that you see on the photos of this post, is work of the North American modeler Thumb Dog, who posted them on Paper Modelers forum. - Preserved and shared by Gallica website, now you can download and build your own Vintage Submarine.

She was named the "Ko-Hyoteki" (It is the meaning "A-Target" in English.)as "a target for antisubmarine attack training" for counterespionage. The five "Ko-Hyoteki"were thrown into Pearl Harbour attack on December 1941. In the end, none of the "Ko-Hyoteki" Unit returned home. With the exception of Ensign Sakamaki, all 9 crew members perished. Ensign Sakamaki became a first POW of the Pacific War. Kaiten - Kamikaze Human Torpedo Paper Model - by Renova Models

Photobucket
Model Assembled and Photo by  Udon Factory

Photobucket
The Real Thing - Captured - 1945
The Kaiten (the literal translation from Japanese to English can be "Return to the sky", commonly rendered as: "The turn toward heaven", "The Heaven Shaker" or "Change the World") were manned torpedos and suicide craft, used by the Imperial Japanese Navy in the final stages of World War II. I took the liberty to transcribe below, the text of Udon, Japanese designer, who is also the photo I used to illustrate this post:

"KAITEN" that is the name of this Kamikaze weapon mean "The fate reversal" .
In a sense,it's a sorrowful name. By the way, what do you think about "Kamikaze Soldiers"? Do you think that they were "the fanatic soldiers"? Actually, most Kamikaze Soldiers were not the fanatic soldiers. Certainly, they were writing, "I'm proud to die for the emperor" in the last letter to the family in many cases. But in those days, all letters were inspected. Therefore, it was not possible to write in "I don't want to die", "Kamikaze is unwilling", etc the letter. If such a letter was found to the sensor, the person (The family too) who had written a letter was considered to be a traitor. So The Kamikaze Soldiers wrote there real intention in there final letter carefully. In most cases, they left the real intention to the sentence in which it worried about their own family.
- Udon

Photobucket
The Kaiten I's were deployed from Japanese B-1 Class Submarine I-36

- Udon

Model Assembled and Photo by  Thai Paper Works

The Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka (Cherry Blossom), was a purpose-built, rocket powered human-guided anti-shipping kamikaze attack plane employed by Japan towards the end of World War II. United States sailors gave the aircraft the nickname Baka (Japanese for "fool" or "idiot"). The MXY-7 Navy Suicide Attacker Ohka was a manned flying bomb that was usually carried underneath a Mitsubishi G4M2e "Betty" Model 24J bomber to within range of its target; on release, the pilot would first glide towards the target and when close enough he would fire the Ohka's three solid-fuel rockets, one at a time or in unison, and fly the missile towards the ship that he intended to destroy. - Wikipedia

The Real Thing
The Los Angeles-class, sometimes called the LA-class or the 688-class, is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) that forms the backbone of the United States submarine fleet. With 42 submarines on active duty and 20 retired, the Los Angeles class is the most numerous nuclear powered submarine class in the world. The class was preceded by the Sturgeon class and followed by the Seawolf and Virginia classes. Except for USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN-709), submarines of this class are named after U.S. cities, breaking a long-standing Navy tradition of naming attack submarines with names of sea creatures. - Wikipedia

- Wikipedia

Launched in July 1863, the HL Hunley was the CSA's response to the Union Blockade that had choked off most of the Confederacy's supply lines. Torpedo boats and rams had made up much of the Confederate Navy, and were more or less, ineffective. Previous semi-successful attempts at building submarine boats had been tried, but only one had managed to sink a Union Warship. This boat was the Hunley. On February 17, 1864, the Hunley crept out of Charleston Harbor under cover of darkness and water. The crank powered sub, crewed by eight men, managed to embed the spar torpedo in the blockade ship USS Housatonic. The sub's propeller was reversed, and she tried to make her way back to port. The torpedo exploded (some historians say it did so prematurely), and the Hunley sank, taking down all eight of her crew. The Housatonic also went down, taking with her five men. To this day, no one knows the exact reason for Hunley's foundering. - Bryan Tan

Enrico Toti was a Balilla-class Italian submarine laid down on 26 January 1925 at the Odero-Terni-Orlando Naval Yard, located in Muggiano, La Spezia. She was one of four in her class, launched on 14 April 1928 and commissioned on 19 September. Her name pays homage to Major Enrico Toti, a WWI combatant posthumously awarded the Italian Gold Medal. The submarine is notable as being the only Italian submarine to have sunk a Royal Navy submarine during the WWII. - Wikipedia
