My friend Kerguelen, from Netherlands, sent me his
geometrical paper model of a
Compound Cube, that beyond its
mathematical properties and its
usefulness in the classroom, it is also a
beautiful decorative object. As
I am not very good with directions, I will transcribe
in the next lines the words that Mr. Kerguelen sent me and
I believe that will be very useful for all who are interested in building this beautiful model. This
paper model was created by
Bamboo Math.
- "As you can see from the pieces it is very
straightforward. You
print the model sheet 4 times, each time
in a different color, for
each of the four cubes. Each sheet has
only 8 pieces, corresponding to the
8 corners of that particular cube. (
As is well known, cubes have 8 corners.) Two of those pieces have an
identical piramidal shape. The
6 others are identical, but differ from the first two. If you look at the pictures, it is quite evident
how to glue the pieces together, while maintaining the
correct color scheme. In my own model
I printed the pieces at such a size that each cube has a side of about 15,5 cm, giving the whole 'sphere' a diameter of about 22,5 cm. That's
a bit smaller than a soccer ball. The
last parts, when the model is 'closing',
are a bit hard, as you can imagine. Therefore
I advise to make the model not too small. I hang it from the ceiling from a very thin nylon wire that is attached inside the model.
It looks quite attractive when it slowly turns and the intertwined cubes show themselves."

Meu amigo Kerguelen, da Holanda, enviou-me seu
modelo de papel geométrico de um cubo Composto, que além de suas
propriedades matemáticas e sua
utilidade em sala de aula, é também um
belo objeto decorativo. Como eu
não sou muito bom com instruções, vou transcrever nas próximas linhas
as palavras que o Sr. Kerguelen me enviou, e acredito que
serão muito úteis para todos os que s e interessarem em montar este belo modelo. Este
modelo foi criado por
Bamboo Math.
- "Como você pode pelas peças, é tudo muito simples. Você deve
imprimir o template 4 vezes, cada vez
em uma cor diferente, para
cada um dos quatro cubos. Cada folha tem
apenas 8 peças, correspondendo aos
8 cantos de um cubo. (
Como todos sabemos, os cubos têm 8 cantos.) Duas dessas peças têm uma
forma piramidal idêntica. Os outros 6
são idênticos, mas diferem dos dois primeiros. Se você olhar para as imagens, é
bastante evidente como colar os pedaços juntos, mantendo o
esquema de cores correto. Em meu próprio modelo,
eu mprimi as peças em um tamanho tal que cada cubo tem um lado de cerca de 15,5 cms, dando a "esfera" um diâmetro total de cerca de 22,5 cms. Isso é um
pouco menor do que uma bola de futebol. As
últimas partes, quando o modelo é "fechado", são um
pouco difíceis, como você pode imaginar, por isso eu aconselho a
não tentar montar o modelo em um tamanho muito pequeno. Eu pendurei-o ao teto de um fio de nylon bem fino que foi fixado no interior do modelo.
Ele chama muita atenção quando gira lentamente e os cubos dão a ilusão de se entrelaçarem."
