Artistic Interpretation

The wonder of King Maussolus tomb was not so much in it’s size but in it’s hundreds of beautiful sculptures. Conceived of and possibly even started during his lifetime by his wife/sister Artemesia it was completed in BC 350, three years after his death. In some ways it was a very different wonder than so many of the religious structures on the list. This was a tomb dedicated to one man and the decorative sculptures by Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas, and Timotheus, were of people and animals rather than Greek gods. The Mausoleum stood for some 1600 years with only light damage from earthquakes. In the early 15th century the Knights of St. John of Malta invaded the area and constructed a large castle. To fortify their castle they used much of the stone from the Mausoleum. Because they liked the friezes the knights placed them in prominent spots inside the walls of the castle. The castle itself still stands with much of the stonework remaining but the friezes were taken to the British Museum in London along with most of the surviving statues. Many archeological excavations have been undertaken at the site of the Mausoleum and together with the descriptions of the ancient historians give us a fairly clear picture of the tomb’s appearance. Another Artistic Interpretation

A maravilha do Túmulo do Rei Mausolo não estava tanto em seu tamanho, mas nas suas centenas de belas esculturas. Tendo sido idealizado e começado a ser construído ainda durante o reinado do Rei Mausolo, sua construção só terminou três anos após sua morte, no ano 350 antes de Cristo, a mando de sua esposa e irmã Artemesia. De certa forma, era uma maravilha, muito diferente das muitas das estruturas religiosas na lista das sete maravilhas antigas. Este foi um túmulo dedicado a um homem e as esculturas decorativas pelos artesãos Bryaxis, Leocarés, Escopas, e Timóteo, eram de pessoas e animais, ao invés de deuses gregos. O mausoléu resistiu por cerca de 1600 anos, sofrendo danos ocasionais por terremotos. No início do século 15 os Cavaleiros de São João de Malta invadiram a área e construiram um grande castelo. Para fortalecer seu castelo eles usaram muitas pedras do Mausoléu. Porque gostarem dos frisos do mausoléu, os cavaleiros colocaram-nos em pontos de destaque dentro das muralhas do castelo. O castelo ainda existe, mas a maioria dos frisos foram levados para o Museu Britânico, em Londres, juntamente com a maioria das estátuas que restaram. Muitas escavações arqueológicas foram realizadas no local do mausoléu e, juntamente com as descrições dos historiadores antigos dão-nos uma imagem bastante clara da aparência do túmulo. Muitas recriações do modelo escala foram realizados e são exibidos em museus do mundo todo hoje em dia.
