German Human Torpedo Neger Paper Model - by Renova Model - Mini-Submarino Torpedeiro

The Real Thing
Neger was a German torpedo-carrying craft generally described as a human torpedo which could not submerge, but was difficult to see during night operations. The vessel was used by the Kriegsmarine between 1943 and 1945. The name was taken from the constructor of the manned torpedo, Richard Mohr (Mohr is German for Moor (= North African native), and Neger the German word for "negro"). Richard Mohr designed a craft based on the G7e torpedo. The Neger sported a spartan cockpit covered by a perspex dome where the warhead would have been. It had sufficient positive buoyancy to run awash while supporting a second G7e, with warhead, slung below. The vessel had a range of 48 nautical miles at 4 knots and displaced 2.7 tons. The pilot navigated via a wrist compass and air was provided through a Dräger self-contained breathing device. The pilot aimed his weapon by lining up an aiming spike on the nose with a graduated scale on the dome. Subsequently, a second aiming spike was added closer to the dome. It, however, made little difference as water washing over the dome made visibility extremely poor. A simple lever in the cockpit irreversibly started the torpedo and released it. Though not designed as a suicide weapon, the Neger would frequently become one when the torpedo started running but failed to release, and carried the craft and its pilot toward the target.
About 200 vessels of this type were manufactured in 1944. The first Neger vessels entered service in March 1944. However, the Neger turned out to be very hazardous for its crew, and up to 80% of the crews were killed. In return one cruiser, one destroyer, and three Catherine Class BAMS minesweepers were sunk in 1944 with the weapon. The first Negers entered service on March 1944 and the first mission took place on the night of April 20 and 21 1944. Thirty Negers were launched against Allied ships berthed in Anzio. Only 17 of them managed to deploy, with the other 13 capsizing upon reaching the water. Three failed to return and up until then, the Allies had no knowledge of this new unusual weapon. None had made any successful attacks. - Wikipedia

A Really Bad Place To Be...

WW2`s Japanese Submarine Aircraft Carrier I-400-Class Paper Model
In 1/200 Scale - by Paper Model Studio

This detailed paper model version in 1/200 scale of the WW2`s Japanese Submarine Aircraft Carrier I-400-Class is offered by Paper Model Studio, Japanese website. The I-400-class submarines from Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) were the largest submarines of World War II and remained the largest ever built until the construction of nuclear ballistic missile submarines in the 1960s. They were submarine aircraft carriers able to carry three Aichi M6A Seiran aircraft underwater to their destinations. They were designed to surface, launch their planes, then quickly dive again before they were discovered. They also carried torpedoes for close-range combat. They are considered the strategic predecessors to today’s ballistic submarines, especially to the Regulus missile program begun about a decade after World War II. The I-400 class was designed with the range to travel anywhere in the world and return. A fleet of 18 boats was planned in 1942, and work started on the first in January 1943 at the Kure, Hiroshima arsenal. Within a year the plan was scaled back to five, of which only three (I-400 at Kure, and I-401 and I-402 at Sasebo) were completed. - know more at I.400.Class.Submarine.at.Wikipedia

Classe.I.400.na.Wikipedia

Berlin Wall Section - by Rocketman Tan - O Muro De Berlim

A very beautiful and different model of a section of the Berlin Wall, as we see in museums and parks around the world, as a reminder of the recent past; proof of which is capable human stupidity. One idea is to edit the template and put a graffiti of your choice. This cool model was created by North American designer and modeler by Bryan Tan, aka Rocketman Tan.

The Real Thing, In The Firsts Years

The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany. In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period. - read more at Wikipedia

Berlin Wall Sections In Seoul Plaza, South Korea

- Wikipedia

Le Bateau Sous-Marin - A French Vintage Paper Model
by Imagerie d'Epinal - Assembled by Thumb Dog

It is amazing how complex models like this, made at a time when there were no graphics or computer programs, can be so perfect fittings, probably made at the expense of many mathematical calculations. I do not know the exact date, but I believe that this vintage paper model of a submarine of the early days of underwater exploration, printed by the French publisher Imagerie d'Epinal, was originally published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The model, masterfully assembled that you see on the photos of this post, is work of the North American modeler Thumb Dog, who posted them on Paper Modelers forum. - Preserved and shared by Gallica website, now you can download and build your own Vintage Submarine.

The Real Thing
The Los Angeles-class, sometimes called the LA-class or the 688-class, is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) that forms the backbone of the United States submarine fleet. With 42 submarines on active duty and 20 retired, the Los Angeles class is the most numerous nuclear powered submarine class in the world. The class was preceded by the Sturgeon class and followed by the Seawolf and Virginia classes. Except for USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN-709), submarines of this class are named after U.S. cities, breaking a long-standing Navy tradition of naming attack submarines with names of sea creatures. - Wikipedia

- Wikipedia
