The Ephemeral Museum - The Ferro-Velho & Re-Perez Auto Service
Assembled by Mike van Eeden
Mike van Eeden is a friend modeler from Cape Town, South Africa and he contact me via email and kindly sent some photos of his nice work. I commented to him that I thought Cape Town was similar to Rio de Janeiro and he said yes in several ways: beautiful beaches, mountains, laid back life style and mix of cultures.
He said: - "I have always been fascinated with model railways and had a big layout which has become neglected over the years, I’m afraid. I discovered Papermau quite a few years ago and have been collecting your excellent models ever since but have not really had the chance to build any until recently. I am now planning on some small dioramas using your buildings and some of my HO scale trains and people. ...Ultimately I would like to design some buildings of my own which I will share with yourself to publish as free downloads. I would like to capture some of the older buildings in Cape Town or perhaps ones I remember from my childhood that aren’t there anymore. ...The city centre still has some classic art deco buildings hidden amongst the boring later architecture of the 70’s and 80’s."
- "Thanks, Mike, for all the great photos (I will be posting gradually here at the blog, ok?) and for the kind words. Greetings from Brazil to beautiful South Africa!" - Mauther
If you want to build your own Junk Yard Facade and Re-Perez Auto Service, the links to download both models are right below, at the end of this post.
Saudações do Brasil à bela África do Sul!" - Mauther

About the Ephemeral Museum:
I "am in the paper modeling" since 2005, although I've had contact with paper models from my childhood in the 1970s, via magazines that were sold sporadically in newsagents. I remember magazines with houses to build and dioramas/playsets of airports, western forts, nativity scenes and the like. With the advent of the internet what happened was simply a revival of the papercraft hobby for me and many other people of my generation. Today I am opening a new session here on the blog, the Ephemeral Museum , which is a place where I will show some of the models that I built all these years. I would also like this to be a space where all modelers friends could show their work, so if anyone wants to participate in this "museum", just send photos of your work and a few words, if you want, to the e-mail:
mautherous@gmail.com
All who submit their work will be published, without exceptions.

Shoebill Stork Paper Model - by Ikuo Anazawa - via Canon
You will need only six sheets of paper to build this very well done paper model of the Shoebill Stork, created by Japanese designer Ikuo Anazawa, comissioned by Canon website.
The Shoebill, also known as Whalehead or Shoe-Billed Stork, is a very large stork-like bird. It derives its name from its massive shoe-shaped bill.
Although it has a somewhat stork-like overall form and has previously been classified in the order Ciconiiformes, its true affiliations with other living birds is ambiguous. Some authorities now reclassify it with the Pelecaniformes.
The adult is mainly grey while the juveniles are browner. It lives in tropical east Africa in large swamps from Sudan to Zambia. - know more at Shoebill.Stork.at.Wikipedia

White Lion Paper Model - by Katsuyuki Shiga - via Canon
Created by Japanese designer Katsuyuki Shiga, comissioned by Canon website, this is the White Lion paper model. The white lion is a rare color mutation of the Timbavati area. White lions are the same as the tawny African Lion (Panthera leo krugeri) found in some wildlife reserves in South Africa and in zoos around the world. White lions are not a separate subspecies and are thought to be indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was in 1938. Regarded as divine by locals, white lions first came to public attention in the 1970s in Chris McBride's book The White Lions of Timbavati. Up until 2009, when the first pride of white lions was reintroduced to the wild, it was widely believed that the white lion could not survive in the wild. It is for this reason that a large part of the population of white lions now reside in zoos. - know more at White.Lion.at.Wikipedia

This Is Not Paper, But... - Ship In A Bottle - All You Need To Know To Build Yours - by Awesomecreations
I believe I've posted two tutorials here on the blog about ships in bottles, but this is the more detailed and the most closely than the ancient sailors did during their long and uncertain trips in the Golden Age of Sail, as a way to pass time and not thinking too much on risks that they ran.
This very well done tutorial, full of photos was created by a South African guy called Awesomecreations and was originally posted at Instructables website. Even if you never think of building a ship in a bottle, it's worth taking a look at the ingenious techniques used.
