Korean Turtle Ship - by How Paper Cafe - Barco de Guerra Antigo
The Real Thing - Replica |
The first references to older, first generation turtle ships, known as Gwiseon , come from 1413 and 1415 records in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which mention a mock battle between a gwiseon and a Japanese warship. However, these early turtle ships soon fell out of use as Korea’s naval preparedness decreased during a long period of relative peace.
Turtle ships participated in numerous victories against Japanese naval forces that supported Toyotomi Hideyoshi's attempts to conquer Korea from 1592-1598, inflicting heavy losses. However, their historical role may have been exaggerated since "the entire Korean fleet probably did not have more than half a dozen turtle boats in action at any one time". Korean admiral Yi Sun-sin is credited with designing the ship. His turtle ships were equipped with at least five different types of cannon. Their most distinguishable feature was a dragon-shaped head at the bow (front) that could launch cannon fire or flames from the mouth. Each was also equipped with a fully covered deck that was shielded to deflect cannon fire, and with iron spikes to discourage enemy men from attempting to board the ship. - Wikipedia
Artistic Interpretation Of A Turtle Boat Attacking A Japanese Ship |

WW2 Italian Submarine Enrico Toti - by Delfini d'Acciaio
Enrico Toti was a Balilla-class Italian submarine laid down on 26 January 1925 at the Odero-Terni-Orlando Naval Yard, located in Muggiano, La Spezia. She was one of four in her class, launched on 14 April 1928 and commissioned on 19 September. Her name pays homage to Major Enrico Toti, a WWI combatant posthumously awarded the Italian Gold Medal. The submarine is notable as being the only Italian submarine to have sunk a Royal Navy submarine during the WWII. - Wikipedia
Lightship Ambrose in 1:250 scale - by Digital Navy - Barco Farol
Lightship Ambrose was built in 1908 to guide ships through the newly opened deepwater Ambrose Channel, New York harbor’s main entrance from the open sea. In 1936, she was transferred to the Scotland station off Sandy Hook and retired in 1968. In 1968, she was acquired by the South Street Seaport Museum where she is moored along pier 16 to this day. - Digital Navy
- Digital Navy

Disney`s Mississippi Steamboat - by Page 42 - Barco À Vapor
This very cool model came with Disney`s toon magazines in 1976. Every week you received one part, that was inside the magazine.
The term steamboat is usually used to refer to smaller steam-powered boats working on lakes and rivers, particularly riverboats; steamship generally refers to larger steam-powered ships, usually ocean-going, capable of carrying a (ship's) boat. The term steam wheeler is archaic and rarely used. In England, "steam packet", after its sailing predecessor, was the usual term; even "steam barge" could be used, especially in newspaper reports. Steam engines were developed and adapted in the late 18th century for use on ships, but did not become widely used until the early 19th century.
An American Steamboat |
A Brazilian Gaiola |

Boat Cerberus Paper Model - by Paper Shipwright - Barco Cerberus
The Real Thing |
The Cerberus was ordered in 1868 by the Colony of Victoria in pre-Federation Australia to provide protection for Port Phillip. Cerberus was the first major warship to rely on steam propulsion alone. She was a breastwork monitor, her turrets being raised on an armoured breastwork to improve her sea-keeping.
Cerberus arrived in Port Phillip in 1871 and never left. Sold for scrap in 1925, she was sunk as a breakwater in the bay in 1926. Various efforts have been made to raise and preserve her, but time is now running out fast. More information on the current state of the ship can be found at : http://www.cerberus.com.au.

Riverboat Krakus - by Carapace - Barco à Vapor Krakus
Color printers are revolutionizing card modeling. Printing out your own sheets has so many advantages (not the least of which is being able to start over when you screw up).
There is one such advantage that is now gaining wider interest: It is the fact that being in charge of the printing allows you to modify the model before you print it. Maybe you just change the color-scheme, change the scale, or correct a fit problem. Or maybe you completely redesign the model!.
That is what my last project was: A complete redesign of a 30-year-old Maly Modelarz model of a Polish paddlewheel riverboat, the Krakus. - text by Carapace
You can download the redesigned model of Krakus in the link at the end of this post.

RMS Titanic - by Currel Graphics
Currel Graphics have several models of Titanic for free download.
Note the size of the model in comparison the pen:
Model and photos by Jerry Vondeling from the Netherlands
Model & photo by Michael Bugmann of Switzerland.
RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, and sank on 15 April 1912, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.
The largest passenger steamship in the world, the Olympic-Class RMS Titanic was owned by the White Star Line and constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. After setting sail for New York City on 10 April 1912 with 2,223 people on board, she hit the iceberg four days into the crossing, at 11:40 pm on 14 April 1912, and sank at 2:20 am the following morning. The high casualty rate resulting from the sinking was due in part to the fact that, although complying with the regulations of the time, the ship carried lifeboats for only 1,178 people. A disproportionate number of men died due to the "women and children first" protocol that was enforced by the ship's crew.
Titanic was designed by experienced engineers, using some of the most advanced technologies and extensive safety features of the time. Adding to the ironic nature of the tragedy is the fact that the liner sank on her maiden voyage. The high loss of life, the media frenzy over Titanic's famous victims, the legends about the sinking, the resulting changes in maritime law, and the discovery of the wreck have all contributed to the enduring interest in Titanic. - Wikipedia
- Wikipedia
