The website of the Japan Water Resources Agency has a children’s section that offers several water-themed papercrafts, including dams, pumping equipment and small observation facilities.
These models are simple to build and at the same time educational, since they represent, in scale, real structures used to control water flow, ensure supply and maintain safety across the country’s water systems.
Among the available models is the old Yoshino River Mouth Dam, a real structure that spans about 190 meters in width and, in the papercraft version, is divided into six parts to make assembly easier and give a better sense of proportion.
There is also the fish passage observation room, which includes a QR code on the back of the papercraft. When scanned with a smartphone, it shows real video footage of fish passing through the channel, turning the model into a fun and interactive experience.
Another highlight is the Urayama Dam, presented with a simple mechanism that simulates water release. The model lets you move parts of the structure to reproduce how the dam works.
The Hitokura Dam has its own interactive element too, since it can be paired with a cross-release video that plays on a smartphone when the phone is positioned over the model, blending the physical and the digital.
In addition to the dams, there are some very interesting vehicles. One of them is a portable pump truck, represented in the model as a vehicle used to drain water during emergencies. It carries a generator, pump and hoses to act quickly in affected areas.
There is also a patrol boat, used to inspect large reservoirs and lakes, and it is one of the largest watercraft operated by the agency.
Another model depicts a mobile water purification unit, a machine capable of filtering even seawater through ultra-fine membranes and turning it into drinking water, a valuable technology for disaster situations.
The site is designed to be educational, offering clear explanations about why dams, pumps, tunnels and purification systems are necessary. Each papercraft comes as a PDF file with straightforward assembly instructions.

Esses modelos são simples de montar e ao mesmo tempo educativos, já que mostram, em escala, estruturas reais usadas para controlar o fluxo da água, garantir o abastecimento e manter a segurança hídrica.
Entre os modelos disponíveis está a antiga barragem da Foz do Rio Yoshino, uma estrutura real que tem cerca de 190 metros de largura e que, no papercraft, é dividida em seis partes para facilitar a montagem e dar uma boa noção de proporção.
Há também a sala de observação da passagem de peixes, que no modelo de papel inclui um código QR no verso. Ao apontar o celular, dá para assistir a um vídeo real da passagem de peixes, criando uma experiência interativa bem divertida.
Outro destaque é a barragem de Urayama, representada com um mecanismo que simula a liberação de água. O modelo permite mover partes da estrutura para reproduzir o funcionamento da barragem de forma simples.
Já a barragem de Hitokura pode ser combinada com um vídeo de liberação cruzada que aparece no smartphone quando o aparelho é colocado sobre o modelo, misturando o papel e o digital.
Além das barragens, há veículos muito interessantes: um caminhão-bomba portátil, que no modelo representa um veículo usado para drenar água em casos de emergência. Ele carrega um gerador, bomba e mangueiras para atuar rapidamente em áreas afetadas.
Há também um barco de patrulha, usado para inspecionar reservatórios largos e grandes lagos, sendo um dos maiores embarcados da agência.
Outro modelo é de uma unidade de purificação de água móvel: uma máquina que pode filtrar até mesmo água salgada por meio de membranas muito finas e transformá-la em água potável, uma tecnologia valiosa para situações de desastres.
O site é pensado para ser educativo, com explicações acessíveis sobre por que barragens, bombas, túneis e sistemas de purificação são necessários. Cada papercraft vem em PDF, acompanhado de instruções claras de montagem.
