The Ephemeral Museum - The Steampunk Mansion Papercraft Assembled by Greg

One of the most interesting things about papercrafting is realizing that a model does not necessarily end when its creator finishes the templates. Once the file is published and begins traveling around the internet, each modeler can interpret it in their own way, adding techniques, details and solutions that were never part of the original project.

And I think the Steampunk Mansion featured in this post is a perfect example of that.

This incredible build was made by Greg, a modeler from Ireland who kindly contacted me and sent these photos of his version of the Steampunk Mansion, a model I recently published here at Papermau.

Greg did much more than simply print, cut and assemble the model. He printed most of the pages three times and used the extra copies to create recessed doors and windows, as well as several layers of relief on the walls and external details of the building.

The result can be clearly seen in the photos. Frames, windows, doors, panels and many small elements of the façade gained real depth and now cast tiny shadows over the walls. The technique added a very interesting three-dimensional appearance to the building and, from some angles, I almost have the impression that I am looking at a completely different version of the Steampunk Mansion.

When I created this model, I tried to include many small elements in the textures precisely to suggest volumes, mechanisms, signs, pipes and overlapping parts typical of the steampunk aesthetic. Seeing someone transform some of these printed details into actual physical relief is one of those surprises that makes sharing models freely on the internet so rewarding.

The file is the same, the pieces are the same, but in the hands of another modeler the final result can acquire a completely different personality.

Greg was quite modest when I asked if he would like to write a few words to accompany the photos. He simply said that he likes putting models together. Perhaps that is also a good definition of the spirit of this hobby: printing a few sheets of paper, sitting at a table with scissors, a hobby knife and glue and, over the course of a few hours, transforming something two-dimensional into a small object that simply did not exist before.

This is exactly the kind of work I like to preserve here at The Ephemeral Museum. Paper is a simple and inevitably ephemeral material, but every build is unique because it carries something of the choices, patience and creativity of the person who made it.

My sincere thanks to Greg for building the Steampunk Mansion, for allowing me to share these photos here at Papermau and, above all, for showing such an interesting way of taking this model several steps beyond the original project.

Uma das coisas mais interessantes no papelmodelismo é perceber que um modelo não necessariamente termina quando seu criador conclui os templates. Depois que o arquivo é publicado e começa a viajar pela internet, cada modelista pode interpretá-lo à sua maneira, acrescentando técnicas, detalhes e soluções que não estavam previstas no projeto original.

E acho que a Steampunk Mansion apresentada neste post é um ótimo exemplo disso.

Esta incrível montagem foi feita por Greg, um modelista da Irlanda que gentilmente entrou em contato comigo e enviou estas fotos de sua versão da Steampunk Mansion, um modelo que publiquei recentemente aqui no Papermau.

Greg não se limitou simplesmente a imprimir, recortar e montar o modelo. Ele imprimiu a maior parte das páginas três vezes e utilizou as cópias extras para criar portas e janelas recuadas e também várias camadas de relevo nas paredes e nos detalhes externos da construção.

O resultado pode ser visto claramente nas fotos. Molduras, janelas, portas, painéis e vários pequenos elementos da fachada ganharam profundidade real e passaram a projetar pequenas sombras sobre as paredes. A técnica acrescentou um aspecto tridimensional muito interessante à construção e, em alguns ângulos, a impressão que tenho é de estar olhando para uma versão completamente diferente da Steampunk Mansion.

Quando criei este modelo, procurei colocar muitos pequenos elementos na textura justamente para sugerir volumes, mecanismos, placas, tubulações e partes sobrepostas típicas daquela estética steampunk. Ver alguém transformar alguns desses detalhes impressos em relevos físicos é uma daquelas surpresas que tornam tão interessante compartilhar modelos gratuitamente pela internet.

O arquivo é o mesmo, as peças são as mesmas, mas nas mãos de outro modelista o resultado pode ganhar uma personalidade completamente diferente.

Greg foi bastante modesto quando perguntei se gostaria de escrever algumas palavras para acompanhar as fotos. Disse simplesmente que gosta de montar modelos. Talvez essa seja também uma boa definição para o espírito deste hobby: imprimir algumas folhas de papel, sentar diante de uma mesa com tesoura, estilete e cola e, durante algumas horas, transformar algo bidimensional em um pequeno objeto que antes simplesmente não existia.

É justamente esse tipo de trabalho que gosto de guardar aqui no The Ephemeral Museum. O papel é um material simples e inevitavelmente efêmero, mas cada montagem é única, porque carrega um pouco das escolhas, da paciência e da criatividade de quem a construiu.

The Ephemeral Museum - Hot Wheels Garages and Scenery Assembled and Adapted by Raymond J. Usher

One of the most rewarding parts of maintaining Papermau is receiving messages from people in many different parts of the world showing how they use and adapt the models published on the blog. This time, The Ephemeral Museum welcomes Raymond J. Usher, a Hot Wheels collector and the person behind the Instagram profile @hotwheels_outside.

Raymond found Papermau through a Google search while looking for scenery for his collection. Shortly afterward, he kindly sent me several photographs by email showing buildings he had assembled to create garages, workshops and small streets for his cars.

All the photographs in this post were taken by Raymond, and all the models shown in them were assembled and adapted by him. After receiving the pictures, I asked for his permission to publish them in The Ephemeral Museum and invited him to write a few words about his collection and how he discovered papercraft. Raymond kindly agreed and prepared the account below especially for this post.

One particularly interesting feature of his builds is the method he uses. Raymond glues the printed sheets onto cardboard taken from boxes, removes the traditional glue tabs and joins the structures with hot glue. This makes the buildings stronger and more resistant, which is especially useful for scenery that will be moved, stored and used repeatedly for play and photography.

I always encourage this kind of adaptation. Paper models do not have to be assembled in exactly the same way by everyone. Papercraft is an especially good hobby for creative people who enjoy experimenting and finding their own solutions. Parts can be reinforced, doors and windows can be modified, buildings can be combined, bases can be added and different assembly methods can be used. Most of the time, these changes are simple and require practically no additional expense, since they can be made with materials already available at home.

Raymond achieved excellent results. The weathered textures, old automotive advertisements and miniature cars create scenes full of personality. The buildings work perfectly as neighborhood garages and workshops, while the visible cardboard along some of the edges adds to the handmade character of the models.

Below, in Raymond’s own words, is the story of how it all began:

“I started the Instagram channel during the children’s school holiday as a way to get them playing outside instead of being stuck on their tablets all the time.

We started by simply taking the Hot Wheels cars and track outside because it was sunny. At that point, most of our collection consisted of hand-me-down cars and the occasional one bought over the years. But I soon realized that there was a whole world of cars to collect.

I ended up picking up random cars that caught my eye while grocery shopping and then discovered the Fast and Furious cars, which I have been collecting lately. We use a mixture of Hot Wheels track and plastic guttering for the racetrack. The guttering is wide enough for racing several cars at the same time, and it is also cheap.

Then I started looking for ways to make the track look a little better while staying on a budget, and that was when I came across papercraft. At the moment, I am building up my collection of paper buildings to use as scenery.”

What began as a way to encourage the children to play outdoors eventually brought together collecting, creativity, model building and photography. The use of plastic guttering as racetracks and cardboard from boxes to reinforce the models shows how simple ideas and inexpensive materials can produce original and enjoyable results.

Raymond encontrou o Papermau por meio de uma pesquisa no Google enquanto procurava cenários para sua coleção. Pouco depois, enviou-me por e-mail fotografias de construções que montou para criar oficinas, garagens e pequenas ruas para seus carrinhos.

Todas as fotografias desta postagem são de Raymond, e todos os modelos mostrados foram montados e adaptados por ele. Quando recebi as imagens, pedi sua autorização para publicá-las no The Ephemeral Museum e perguntei se gostaria de escrever algumas palavras sobre a coleção e sobre a maneira como descobriu o papercraft. Raymond gentilmente concordou e preparou o relato que aparece mais abaixo especialmente para este post.

Uma característica interessante de suas montagens é o método utilizado. Raymond cola as folhas impressas sobre papelão reaproveitado de caixas, elimina as abas tradicionais dos modelos e monta as estruturas com cola quente. Assim, as construções ficam mais firmes e resistentes, algo bastante útil para cenários que serão movimentados, guardados e usados em diferentes brincadeiras e fotografias.

Eu sempre incentivo esse tipo de adaptação. Os modelos de papel não precisam ser montados exatamente da mesma maneira por todas as pessoas. O papercraft é um hobby especialmente interessante para quem gosta de criar, experimentar e encontrar soluções próprias. É possível reforçar peças, modificar portas e janelas, combinar construções, acrescentar bases ou alterar o método de montagem. Na maioria das vezes, essas mudanças podem ser feitas de forma simples e praticamente sem custos adicionais, utilizando materiais que já temos em casa.

O resultado de Raymond ficou excelente. As texturas envelhecidas, os antigos anúncios automotivos e os carrinhos formam cenas cheias de personalidade. As construções funcionam muito bem como oficinas e garagens de bairro, e o papelão aparente em algumas bordas reforça o caráter artesanal das maquetes.

A seguir, nas palavras do próprio Raymond, está a história de como tudo começou:

“Comecei o perfil no Instagram durante as férias escolares das crianças, como uma maneira de fazê-las brincar ao ar livre, em vez de ficarem o tempo todo presas aos tablets.

No início, simplesmente levávamos os carrinhos e as pistas Hot Wheels para fora porque o tempo estava ensolarado. Naquela época, a maior parte de nossa coleção era formada por carrinhos usados que havíamos recebido de outras pessoas e por alguns poucos comprados ao longo dos anos. Logo percebi, porém, que existia todo um mundo de carros para colecionar.

Comecei a comprar modelos que chamavam minha atenção enquanto fazia compras e depois descobri os carros da série Velozes e Furiosos, que tenho colecionado mais recentemente. Utilizamos uma combinação de pistas Hot Wheels e calhas plásticas para criar os circuitos. As calhas são largas o suficiente para permitir que vários carros corram ao mesmo tempo e, além disso, são baratas.

Depois comecei a procurar maneiras de deixar as pistas mais interessantes sem gastar muito e foi assim que descobri o papercraft. Agora estou aumentando minha coleção de construções de papel para utilizar nos cenários.”

O que começou como uma maneira de incentivar as crianças a brincar fora de casa acabou reunindo colecionismo, criatividade, construção de maquetes e fotografia. O uso de calhas plásticas como pistas e de papelão de caixas para reforçar os modelos mostra como ideias simples e materiais acessíveis podem produzir resultados divertidos e originais.

The Ephemeral Museum - A Custom House Paper Model Assembled by Davi Roque

One of the greatest joys of creating paper models is seeing them come to life in the hands of other modelers. Each build becomes unique, whether through the choice of paper, the care taken during assembly or simply through the way the finished model is photographed.

Today I have the pleasure of sharing this beautiful build of my Custom House paper model, originally published here on Papermau in October of 2023. Inspired by small commercial buildings that can still be found in many towns and neighborhoods, this is a simple model to assemble, but full of little details that give it a lot of personality.

The model featured in this post was assembled by friend here form Brazil, Davi Roque, who kindly shared these photos on his Instagram profile. The build is very clean and precise, with an excellent finish, showing how even a relatively simple model can become a very charming display piece when built with patience and dedication.

One of the things I like most about the papercraft world is exactly this. A file is downloaded somewhere in the world, printed on a home printer, carefully cut out, folded and glued together and, little by little, gains an identity of its own. Even though the template is exactly the same, each modeler leaves a little of his own personality in the finished piece.

This is exactly the spirit of The Ephemeral Museum. To preserve these small paper creations before time inevitably plays its part. After all, paper is a delicate and ephemeral material, but photographs preserve not only the model itself, but also the talent, care and dedication of the person who built it.

Uma das maiores alegrias de criar modelos de papel é vê-los ganhar vida nas mãos de outros modelistas. Cada montagem acaba se tornando única, seja pela escolha do papel, pelo cuidado durante a montagem ou simplesmente pela maneira como o modelo é fotografado depois de pronto.

Hoje tenho o prazer de compartilhar esta belíssima montagem do meu modelo A Custom House, publicado originalmente aqui no Papermau em outubro de 2023. Inspirado nas pequenas construções comerciais que ainda podem ser encontradas em muitas cidades e bairros, este é um modelo simples de montar, mas repleto de pequenos detalhes que lhe dão bastante personalidade.

O modelo apresentado nesta postagem foi montado por meu amigo aqui do Brasil mesmo, o Davi Roque, que gentilmente compartilhou estas fotos em seu perfil no Instagram. A montagem ficou muito limpa e precisa, com excelente acabamento, mostrando como mesmo um modelo relativamente simples pode se transformar em uma peça bastante charmosa quando construído com paciência e dedicação.

Uma das coisas de que mais gosto no universo do papercraft é justamente isso. Um arquivo é baixado em algum lugar do mundo, impresso em uma impressora doméstica, cuidadosamente recortado, dobrado e colado e, aos poucos, ganha uma identidade própria. Embora o template seja exatamente o mesmo, cada modelista acaba deixando um pouco de sua personalidade na peça finalizada.

Esse é exatamente o espírito do The Ephemeral Museum. Registrar essas pequenas criações de papel antes que o tempo cumpra seu papel inevitável. Afinal, o papel é um material delicado e efêmero, mas as fotografias preservam não apenas o modelo em si, como também o talento, o cuidado e a dedicação de quem o montou.

The Ephemeral Museum - Marinho Garage Stand Diorama Papercraft In 1/64 Scale - by Michael Steinebach

Photographer and visual artist Michael Steinebach, known as Photoreporter on X/Twitter, created another impressive series of images using an original Papermau papercraft in 1/64 scale. This time, the chosen setting was the Marinho Garage Stand, a small miniature garage published here on the blog in February of 2025 and specially created to serve as a diorama for Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Tomica and other die-cast vehicles in the same scale.

Combining traditional photography, digital editing and artificial intelligence tools, Michael transformed the small garage into an extremely realistic and cinematic urban setting. The atmosphere of the images recalls those old repair shops hidden between commercial buildings and suburban streets, discreet places full of personality that seem forgotten somewhere in time. The 1965 Mustang Fastback used throughout the entire photo series fits perfectly into this environment, reinforcing the nostalgic and almost melancholic mood of the photographs. In many moments, it is hard to believe we are looking at a miniature in reduced scale.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this kind of work is seeing how a simple paper model can gain an entirely new dimension in the hands of someone creative. The Marinho Garage Stand was originally designed as a small and easy-to-build diorama, but in the images created by Michael it almost stops looking like a papercraft and starts to exist as a real place, full of texture, light, depth and history.

The vehicle featured in the photographs this time is a beautiful 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback from Hot Wheels, part of the HW Workshop series. With its classic paint scheme and aggressive lines, the car blends perfectly with the environment created by Michael, reinforcing that vintage American aesthetic that feels straight out of an old movie or a forgotten photograph taken inside a neighborhood garage decades ago.

Michael lives in Japan and works precisely within this fascinating intersection between photography, miniatures and digital art. As he himself explains, his passion for die-cast vehicles goes far beyond collecting. For Michael, miniature cars from Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Tomica, Johnny Lightning and other brands become central characters in carefully crafted visual narratives created through photography.

Blending traditional photography with modern artificial intelligence tools, Michael creates hyper-realistic scenes that place these miniatures into deeply immersive cinematic environments. Whether it is a classic American muscle car, a Japanese sports car or an old weathered vehicle, his images create a very interesting bridge between miniatures, imagination and reality.

Michael’s work is yet another great example of how the papercraft universe can go far beyond simple assembly. Sometimes, a small paper model becomes part of something larger, such as an artistic photograph, a visual narrative or a scene so convincing that, for a few seconds, it makes us forget that everything shown there literally fits in the palm of a hand.

O fotógrafo e artista visual Michael Steinebach, conhecido como Photoreporter no X/Twitter, criou mais uma impressionante série de imagens utilizando um papercraft original Papermau em escala 1/64. Desta vez, o cenário escolhido foi a Marinho Garage Stand, uma pequena garagem em miniatura publicada aqui no blog em fevereiro de 2025 e criada especialmente para servir como diorama para carrinhos Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Tomica e outros veículos die-cast na mesma escala.

Combinando fotografia tradicional, edição digital e ferramentas de inteligência artificial, Michael transformou a pequena garagem em um cenário urbano extremamente realista e cinematográfico. O clima das imagens lembra aquelas oficinas antigas escondidas entre prédios comerciais e ruas suburbanas, lugares discretos e cheios de personalidade que parecem existir esquecidos no tempo. O Mustang Fastback 1965 utilizado em todo o ensaio se encaixa perfeitamente nesse ambiente, reforçando ainda mais a atmosfera nostálgica e quase melancólica das fotografias. Em vários momentos, é difícil acreditar que estamos olhando para uma miniatura em escala reduzida.

O mais fascinante nesse tipo de trabalho é perceber como um simples modelo de papel pode ganhar uma nova dimensão nas mãos de alguém criativo. A Marinho Garage Stand nasceu originalmente como um pequeno diorama de montagem simples, mas nas imagens criadas por Michael ela praticamente deixa de parecer um papercraft e passa a existir como um lugar real, cheio de textura, luz, profundidade e história.

O veículo utilizado nas fotografias desta vez é um belíssimo Ford Mustang Fastback 1965 da Hot Wheels, pertencente à série HW Workshop. Com sua pintura clássica e linhas agressivas, o carro combina perfeitamente com o ambiente criado por Michael, reforçando ainda mais aquela estética vintage americana que parece saída diretamente de um filme antigo ou de uma fotografia esquecida em alguma oficina do interior.

Michael vive no Japão e trabalha justamente nessa interessante fronteira entre fotografia, miniaturas e arte digital. Segundo ele próprio comenta, sua paixão por veículos die-cast vai muito além do colecionismo. Para Michael, miniaturas da Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Tomica, Johnny Lightning e outras marcas funcionam como personagens centrais de pequenas narrativas visuais cuidadosamente construídas através da fotografia.

Misturando fotografia tradicional com modernas ferramentas de inteligência artificial, Michael cria cenas hiper-realistas que colocam essas miniaturas em ambientes cinematográficos extremamente imersivos. Seja um muscle car clássico americano, um esportivo japonês ou um carro antigo desgastado pelo tempo, suas imagens conseguem criar uma ponte muito interessante entre miniatura, imaginação e realidade.

O trabalho de Michael é mais um ótimo exemplo de como o universo do papercraft pode ir muito além da simples montagem. Às vezes, um pequeno modelo de papel acaba se transformando em parte de algo maior, como uma fotografia artística, uma narrativa visual ou uma cena tão convincente que, por alguns segundos, nos faz esquecer que tudo aquilo cabe literalmente na palma da mão.

The Ephemeral Museum - Old Town Garage Tiny Diorama Build by Tiny Craft World

A few days ago, the talented artist and model maker Nika, from Tiny Craft World, published an impressive build of the “Old Town Garage” model, originally created in 1/64 scale.

Nika’s work goes far beyond simply assembling paper models. Anyone who visits her website and YouTube channel can quickly notice the great care she dedicates to miniatures, dioramas and handmade projects in general. Her works are always beautifully presented, with excellent finishing, great photography and special attention to small details, something essential when working in such reduced scales.

For this build, Nika reduced the model to approximately 43% of its original size, creating an extremely small and detailed miniature. Considering this reduction, the final scale probably ended up somewhere between 1/100 and 1/120. Even at such a tiny size, she managed to add depth, texture and realism to the diorama, using simple but very effective techniques, such as internal reinforcement, textured bases and extra layers of paper to create thickness in elements like fences and frames. The final result is truly impressive.

Besides the build itself, Nika also produced an extremely detailed video tutorial, showing the entire construction process and sharing several useful tips about paper choice, scale reduction, base texturing and small tricks to improve the finishing of miniaturized models. Even for those who have been building papercrafts for a long time, it is a very interesting video to watch, both for the quality of the production and for the creative solutions presented during the assembly.

Alguns dias atrás, a talentosa artista e modelista Nika, do site Tiny Craft World, publicou uma impressionante montagem do modelo “Old Town Garage”, originalmente criado em escala 1/64.

O trabalho da Nika vai muito além de simplesmente montar modelos de papel. Quem visita seu site e seu canal no YouTube percebe rapidamente o enorme cuidado que ela dedica às miniaturas, dioramas e projetos artesanais em geral. Seus trabalhos têm sempre uma apresentação muito caprichada, com excelente acabamento, ótima fotografia e uma atenção especial aos pequenos detalhes, algo fundamental quando se trabalha em escalas tão reduzidas.

Para esta montagem, Nika reduziu o modelo para aproximadamente 43% do tamanho original, criando uma miniatura extremamente pequena e detalhada. Mesmo para quem já monta papercrafts há bastante tempo, é um vídeo muito interessante de assistir, tanto pela qualidade da produção quanto pelas soluções criativas apresentadas durante a montagem.

About the Ephemeral Museum:

I have been involved in paper modeling since 2005, although I had my first contact with paper models back in my childhood in the 1970s, through magazines that were sold sporadically at newsstands. I remember publications with houses to build and dioramas or playsets of airports, western forts, nativity scenes and similar themes.

With the advent of the internet, what happened was simply a revival of the papercraft hobby for me and for many other people of my generation. Today I am opening a new section here on the blog, The Ephemeral Museum, which is a place where I will show some of the models I have built over all these years.

I would also like this to be a space where fellow modelers can show their work, so if anyone wants to participate in this museum, just send photos of your work and a few words, if you like, to the email below:

Eu estou no papelmodelismo desde 2005, embora já tivesse tido contato com modelos de papel na minha infância, nos anos 1970, por meio de revistas que eram vendidas esporadicamente em bancas de jornal. Lembro de publicações com casas para montar e dioramas ou playsets de aeroportos, fortes de velho oeste, presépios e temas semelhantes.

Com o advento da internet, o que houve foi simplesmente um renascimento do hobby do papelmodelismo para mim e para muitas outras pessoas da minha geração. Hoje eu estou abrindo uma nova seção aqui no blog, o The Ephemeral Museum, que é um espaço onde irei mostrar alguns dos modelos que construí ao longo de todos esses anos.
