Offered by designer Ned Reif, currently based in Germany, these four 1/72 scale Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien models are an excellent opportunity for military aviation enthusiasts to discover the work of a designer who follows a very personal path within the papercraft hobby.
The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was one of the fighter aircraft operated by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Because of its liquid-cooled inline engine and elegant lines, it was often mistaken by Allied pilots for a German or Italian aircraft.
Although clearly inspired by the real aircraft, Ned Reif's models are not intended to reproduce every detail with absolute precision. Instead, the designer seeks to capture the essence, personality and spirit of the airplanes he chooses to represent, creating distinctive interpretations filled with character and individuality.
When I thanked Ned Reif for making these models available for publication on Papermau, I asked whether he would like to write a few lines introducing the models to the blog's readers in his own words. I was expecting a brief description of the aircraft or perhaps some information about his work, but I was pleasantly surprised by the thoughtful message below, which I am pleased to share in its entirety. Besides presenting a bit of his background as a designer, it also reveals the interesting artistic philosophy behind his creations:
I have been an admirer of the Papermau website for a long time and am now pleased to see one of my models appear on it. One of my all-time favorites is the "Customizable Generic Cyberpunk Building Papercraft." The Papermau website collects many fine models from all over the world, and it is a pleasure and sometimes a surprise to see the many ideas people have expressed in paper. I admire the hard work that went into collecting them all in one place for such a long time!
As visitors to the gallery on my ko-fi site will quickly see, I have been pursuing my own interpretation of various airplanes for some time. I like to quote Miles Davis, who said, "Sometimes you have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself." After building other designers' models for many years, I lost interest in attempts to miniaturize real airplanes, because no model can ever be an accurate miniaturization. Embracing that insight, I granted myself the freedom to make my own interpretations of the airplanes, other objects, and even people I find inspirational, but in the way that I see them. Like a jazz song, they are recognizable to anyone who really knows the original, even though the interpretation may appear very different to the uninitiated. I hope that they put a smile on people's faces.

Sou admirador do site Papermau há muito tempo e agora estou feliz em ver um dos meus modelos aparecer por aqui. Um dos meus favoritos de todos os tempos é o Customizable Generic Cyberpunk Building Papercraft. O Papermau reúne muitos modelos excelentes de todo o mundo, e é um prazer, e às vezes uma surpresa, ver as inúmeras ideias que as pessoas conseguem expressar através do papel. Admiro o enorme trabalho necessário para reunir tudo isso em um único lugar durante tantos anos.
Como os visitantes da minha galeria perceberão rapidamente, há bastante tempo venho desenvolvendo minhas próprias interpretações de diferentes aviões. Gosto de citar Miles Davis, que disse que às vezes é preciso tocar por muito tempo até conseguir tocar como você mesmo. Depois de construir modelos de outros designers durante muitos anos, perdi o interesse em tentar miniaturizar aeronaves reais, porque nenhum modelo pode ser uma miniaturização perfeita da realidade.
