Interstellar TARS & CASE Papercraft Robots - by Shunichi Makino

At first glance, TARS and CASE might be among the least impressive-looking robots in movie history. They are basically large, dark rectangular blocks, with no apparent head, face, arms or legs. But anyone who has watched Interstellar knows that this simplicity hides two of the most interesting and charismatic machines in recent science fiction.

Japanese designer Shunichi Makino, from Design Office PASTA, transformed the two robots from Interstellar into papercrafts that preserve exactly this minimalist appearance.

Makino himself describes TARS and CASE in a rather curious way: to him, it is as if the mysterious monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey had been given functions similar to those of R2-D2 from Star Wars. It is an amusing comparison, but a surprisingly appropriate one.

In Christopher Nolan's 2014 movie, TARS and CASE are extremely advanced robots. Despite their almost primitive appearance, their bodies are formed by segments capable of separating, rotating and assuming different configurations, allowing them to walk, run, manipulate objects and perform tasks that seem impossible for such simple metallic boxes.

Another memorable feature is that some parameters of their personalities can be adjusted, including their levels of humor and honesty. This creates some of the lighter moments in the movie, especially during the conversations between Cooper and TARS.

Naturally, reproducing in paper all the complex movements seen in the movie would be another story. Makino chose to preserve the characteristic shapes of the robots in relatively simple models, and he points out that their straightforward forms also make them easy to assemble.

The papercraft comes in a three-page PDF and the templates are available for free at the original Design Office PASTA website. For fans of Interstellar, science fiction or simply robots with unconventional designs, TARS and CASE make a very unusual pair to display on a shelf.

À primeira vista, TARS e CASE talvez estejam entre os robôs menos impressionantes da história do cinema. São basicamente grandes blocos retangulares escuros, sem cabeça, rosto, braços ou pernas aparentes. Mas quem assistiu a Interstellar sabe que essa simplicidade esconde duas das máquinas mais interessantes e carismáticas da ficção científica recente.

O designer japonês Shunichi Makino, do Design Office PASTA, transformou os dois robôs de Interstellar em papercrafts que preservam exatamente essa aparência minimalista.

O próprio Makino descreve TARS e CASE de uma maneira bastante curiosa: para ele, é como se o misterioso monólito de 2001: Uma Odisseia no Espaço tivesse recebido funcionalidades semelhantes às de R2-D2, de Star Wars. É uma comparação divertida, mas bastante apropriada.

No filme de Christopher Nolan, lançado em 2014, TARS e CASE são robôs extremamente avançados. Apesar da aparência quase primitiva, seus corpos são formados por segmentos capazes de se separar, girar e assumir diferentes configurações, permitindo que caminhem, corram, manipulem objetos e realizem tarefas que parecem impossíveis para aquelas simples caixas metálicas.

Outra característica memorável é que alguns parâmetros de suas personalidades podem ser ajustados, incluindo níveis de humor e honestidade. Isso acaba criando alguns dos momentos mais leves do filme, especialmente nas conversas entre Cooper e TARS.

Naturalmente, reproduzir em papel toda a complexa movimentação vista no filme seria outra história. Makino optou por preservar as formas características dos robôs em modelos relativamente simples, e ele próprio destaca que suas formas diretas também tornam a montagem fácil.

A Buck Rogers Papercraft Secret Hidden in Plain Sight Online Crichton Poseable Robot Figure 1/6 Scale - by Revell-Fan

Sometimes the best finds are hidden right before our eyes.

On the German website Paper Aviation there is a page dedicated to the Earth Directorate Thunderfighter, the famous spacecraft from the fictional universe of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

The Thunderfighter alone is already a good reason to visit the page, but there is a little secret hidden there.

Anyone who visits the page, downloads the Thunderfighter and leaves will probably never notice that, by simply scrolling further down, a whole collection of additional Buck Rogers papercrafts appears.

There are thirteen additional models and projects related to this universe, including different spacecraft and vehicles, accessories and other interesting creations. Some are presented as beta or experimental versions, but from what I could see, the available models appear to be perfectly buildable.

Among all these hidden treasures, I chose to highlight just one in this post: the Crichton Poseable Robot Figure, created by Marcell "Revell-Fan" von dem Berge.

Crichton is the sophisticated and rather arrogant robot that appeared during the second season of the classic TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Created by Dr. Goodfellow, Crichton has a very peculiar personality and considers himself so advanced that he has difficulty accepting the idea that humans could have created a machine like him.

Marcell's papercraft reproduces Crichton in a large 1/6 scale and, best of all, it is a poseable model. The arms, elbows, wrists and other parts use small joints made from paper and laminated cardboard, allowing the finished robot to be displayed in different poses.

There are also two neck configurations, short and extended, and several interchangeable front visor displays representing different modes such as standby, talking and angry.

The standard version uses eleven parts sheets. There is also a special version designed for printing on silver or metallic paper/card, with twelve parts sheets. This second version takes advantage of the real shine of the material instead of trying to reproduce a metallic surface only with printed textures.

The download also includes a very detailed illustrated assembly guide. Marcell even created a separate five-page tutorial about working with coated silver card, using his own Crichton build to demonstrate the techniques.

An interesting detail is that Marcell credits Julius Perdana, from Paper-Replika, and his poseable Iron Man papercraft as an important source of inspiration for developing practical and stable joints for Crichton.

O Thunderfighter por si só já seria um bom motivo para visitar a página, mas existe um pequeno segredo escondido ali.

Quem entra na página, baixa o Thunderfighter e vai embora provavelmente nunca perceberá que, simplesmente continuando a rolar a página para baixo, aparece toda uma coleção de papercrafts adicionais de Buck Rogers.

São outros treze modelos e projetos relacionados a esse universo, incluindo diferentes naves e veículos, acessórios e outras criações interessantes. Alguns são apresentados como versões beta ou experimentais, mas, pelo que pude ver, os modelos disponíveis parecem perfeitamente montáveis.

A versão convencional utiliza onze folhas de peças. Existe também uma versão especial preparada para impressão em papel ou cartão metálico prateado, com doze folhas de peças. Essa segunda versão aproveita o brilho real do material em vez de tentar reproduzir uma superfície metálica apenas através de texturas impressas.

O download também inclui um manual de montagem ilustrado muito detalhado. Marcell chegou a preparar um tutorial separado de cinco páginas sobre como trabalhar com cartão prateado revestido, usando sua própria montagem de Crichton para demonstrar as técnicas.

An Atmospheric Cyberpunk Pixel Art Papercraft Dioramaby Formanula

This very cool cyberpunk papercraft diorama was created by Formanula and is part of CYBERPUNK - PACK 02, a small futuristic scene designed in a distinctive 3D Pixel-Art style that immediately brings to mind the atmosphere of classic and modern pixel art videogames.

The model represents a small corner of a futuristic city, complete with dark brick walls, signs, graffiti, ventilation ducts, a vending machine, bottles, scattered papers and three tiny pixel-style characters. The scene uses predominantly dark shades of purple, blue and black, contrasted by small details in brighter colors, creating a nighttime atmosphere that perfectly matches the cyberpunk aesthetic.

The complete papercraft comes as a PDF composed of four A4 sheets containing all the pieces needed to build the diorama, including the base, walls, architectural elements, vending machine, three characters and several small accessories. Despite the amount of detail in the finished model, most of the pieces use relatively simple geometric shapes, making this an interesting project even for those who are not used to building more complex paper models.

The second image in this post shows the same scene in its pixel art representation, looking almost like a screen from an old videogame. Comparing it with the assembled paper model is especially interesting, as we can see how the same pixelated environment works as a real three-dimensional miniature, preserving the characters, walls, signs, pavement and many of the small details scattered throughout the scene.

Despite its strong videogame appearance, CYBERPUNK - PACK 02 is not presented as being based on any specific game. It belongs to the Formanula universe, a project dedicated to papercraft kits that combine paper modeling with a distinctive 3D Pixel-Art aesthetic.

Formanula has created several other small paper worlds exploring different themes, including medieval fantasy, zombie apocalypse, urban environments, steampunk and cyberpunk, always using the same interesting combination of pixel art and three-dimensional paper modeling.

One particularly interesting aspect of this model is how differently it can be perceived depending on the viewing angle. Seen from the front, it resembles a dark pixel art videogame scene, while viewed in perspective it reveals its true three-dimensional construction, with walls, floor, characters and objects occupying different levels and giving depth to the little environment.

According to Formanula, no generative AI was used in the creation of this project.

For those who enjoy cyberpunk, pixel art, videogame-inspired miniatures or simply unusual paper dioramas, this is a small project full of personality and a very interesting example of how the visual language of pixel art can be transformed into a physical paper model.

Este interessante diorama de papel cyberpunk foi criado pelo Formanula e faz parte do CYBERPUNK - PACK 02, um pequeno cenário futurista desenvolvido em um característico estilo 3D Pixel-Art que imediatamente lembra a atmosfera dos videogames clássicos e modernos que utilizam pixel art.

O modelo representa um pequeno canto de uma cidade futurista, com paredes escuras de tijolos, letreiros, grafites, dutos de ventilação, uma máquina de venda automática, garrafas, papéis espalhados pelo chão e três pequenos personagens em estilo pixel art. O cenário utiliza predominantemente tons escuros de roxo, azul e preto, contrastados por pequenos detalhes em cores mais vivas, criando uma atmosfera noturna que combina perfeitamente com a estética cyberpunk.

O papercraft completo é composto por um arquivo PDF com quatro folhas A4 contendo todas as peças necessárias para montar o diorama, incluindo a base, as paredes, os elementos arquitetônicos, a máquina de venda automática, os três personagens e vários pequenos acessórios. Apesar da quantidade de detalhes no modelo terminado, a maioria das peças utiliza formas geométricas relativamente simples, tornando este um projeto interessante mesmo para quem não está acostumado a montar modelos de papel mais complexos.

A segunda imagem deste post mostra o mesmo cenário em sua representação em pixel art, parecendo quase uma tela de um antigo videogame. Compará-la com o modelo de papel montado é especialmente interessante, pois podemos ver como o mesmo ambiente pixelado funciona como uma verdadeira miniatura tridimensional, preservando os personagens, as paredes, os letreiros, o piso e muitos dos pequenos detalhes espalhados pelo cenário.

Apesar de sua forte aparência de videogame, CYBERPUNK - PACK 02 não é apresentado como sendo baseado em nenhum jogo específico. Ele faz parte do universo Formanula, um projeto dedicado a kits de papercraft que combinam modelismo em papel com uma característica estética 3D Pixel-Art.

O Formanula já criou vários outros pequenos mundos de papel explorando diferentes temas, incluindo fantasia medieval, apocalipse zumbi, ambientes urbanos, steampunk e cyberpunk, sempre utilizando essa interessante combinação entre pixel art e modelismo tridimensional em papel.

Um aspecto particularmente interessante deste modelo é como ele pode ser percebido de maneiras diferentes dependendo do ângulo de observação. SD Guntank Papercraft - A Tiny One Sheet Gundam Model by Shukuka1014

This nice SD Guntank papercraft was created by Japanese designer and modeler Shukuka1014 and was originally published on his blog in May 2017.

Those who have been following Papermau for some time may already recognize the author's name, since several of his creations have appeared here on the blog over the years. Shukuka1014 has a very eclectic collection of papercrafts, ranging from Japanese historical buildings, temples and shrines to ships, characters and models inspired by popular culture.

This time we have something quite different: a small and very nice version of the Guntank, one of the classic machines from the Mobile Suit Gundam universe. The model follows the SD, or Super Deformed, style, with deliberately exaggerated proportions that give the Guntank a compact, almost toy-like appearance, while preserving its most recognizable features, such as the tracked base, the large cockpit and the two long cannons mounted above the body.

Despite its simplified appearance, this is a cleverly designed little papercraft. The model is assembled from several small sections, and Shukuka1014 provides a useful sequence of photos showing the construction of the cockpit, body, arms, rear exhausts, cannons and tracks until the Guntank is complete.

This Guntank is actually the third and final model of a small SD Gundam V Operation Set created by Shukuka1014. The other two models are the Gundam and Guncannon, also available as free papercrafts on the author's blog. According to Shukuka1014, the models are around 7 cm tall and each one was designed to fit on a single sheet of A4 paper.

Quem acompanha o Papermau há algum tempo talvez já reconheça o nome do autor, pois várias de suas criações apareceram aqui no blog ao longo dos anos. Shukuka1014 possui uma coleção bastante eclética de papercrafts, que vai de construções históricas japonesas, templos e santuários a navios, personagens e modelos inspirados na cultura popular.

Desta vez temos algo bem diferente: uma pequena e muito simpática versão do Guntank, uma das máquinas clássicas do universo Mobile Suit Gundam. O modelo segue o estilo SD, ou Super Deformed, com proporções deliberadamente exageradas que dão ao Guntank uma aparência compacta, quase de brinquedo, sem deixar de preservar suas características mais reconhecíveis, como a base com esteiras, o grande cockpit e os dois longos canhões montados sobre o corpo.

Apesar da aparência simplificada, este é um pequeno papercraft muito bem elaborado. O modelo é montado a partir de várias pequenas seções e Shukuka1014 disponibiliza uma útil sequência de fotos mostrando a construção do cockpit, corpo, braços, escapamentos traseiros, canhões e esteiras até chegar ao Guntank completo.

Na verdade, este Guntank é o terceiro e último modelo de um pequeno conjunto chamado SD Gundam V Operation Set, criado por Shukuka1014. Os outros dois modelos são o Gundam e o Guncannon, também disponíveis gratuitamente no blog do autor. Segundo Shukuka1014, os modelos têm cerca de 7 cm de altura e cada um foi projetado para caber em uma única folha de papel A4.

Cyber City Modular Sci-Fi Papercraft For Dioramas And Wargames by Black Magic Craft

Cyber City is a very interesting set of printable scenery created by Black Magic Craft for building modular cyberpunk and science-fiction environments, especially designed for tabletop wargames, RPGs, skirmish games and miniature photography.

Rather than being a conventional papercraft made of complete pieces with folding and gluing tabs, Cyber City uses a different and very practical construction system. Most of the printable parts consist of flat walls, roofs, floors and decorative panels intended to be glued onto a stronger material, such as cardboard, cardstock, recycled packaging board or even thin sheets of wood.

This construction method makes a lot of sense considering the main purpose of the set. Wargame scenery is constantly handled, moved around the table, rearranged to create different layouts and stored away after each game, so the structures need to be considerably stronger than an ordinary display papercraft.

The printable sheets include a large variety of industrial and futuristic surfaces and details, such as weathered concrete and metal walls, rusty grilles, ventilation systems, electrical boxes, pipes, doors, graffiti, warning stripes and rooftop equipment, all combining to create a convincing worn industrial and cyberpunk atmosphere.

The modular nature of Cyber City is one of its strongest features. Buildings can be created at different heights, stacked, connected by walkways and arranged in many different ways. With the same collection of pieces you can build a compact industrial complex, several separate city blocks or a much larger urban battlefield, depending on the available space and the number of modules you decide to make.

The photos on this post show one of the possible configurations using Cyber City together with miniatures and give a very good idea of how versatile this type of scenery can be for tabletop games.

Black Magic Craft also published a video showing the construction of the scenery, which is especially useful for understanding how the printable textures and panels are transformed into strong three-dimensional terrain pieces. Cyber City is completely free to download from the Black Magic Craft website. There is, however, one small detail worth mentioning so that nobody is surprised by the download process. Although the model is listed at US$0.00, you need to provide a valid email address and create a free account on the website before downloading the files.

No banking or credit card information is required. I went through the entire process myself and downloaded the files before preparing this post. There were no charges, hidden subscriptions or tricks involved.

If you enjoy building scenery for science-fiction miniatures, cyberpunk dioramas or tabletop games, Cyber City is a particularly useful project because, instead of providing only one finished building, it gives you a collection of modular elements that can be combined and rearranged to create a different city every time.

A natureza modular do Cyber City é um de seus pontos mais interessantes. Os edifícios podem ser construídos em diferentes alturas, empilhados, ligados por passarelas e organizados de muitas maneiras diferentes. FUTURA Series Sci-Fi Bunkers Papercrafts For Wargames, Dioramas And RPGs - by Edificios de Papel

Aníbal and Mónica, from the classic Spanish website Edificios de Papel, are back with a new collection specially created for fans of wargames, tabletop games, RPGs, dioramas and miniature scenery. Called the FUTURA Series, this new line dives straight into the worlds of science fiction, military settings and post-apocalyptic landscapes.

The first collection in the series consists of bunkers that basically share the same structure but come with many different textures. There are versions featuring metal plates, concrete, rust, armor plating, industrial surfaces and heavily weathered finishes. Changing the textures makes a big difference and allows several bunkers to be placed together without making the scenery look like a group of identical copies.

As Aníbal explains at Edificios de Papel, the textures in this series were created with the help of artificial intelligence, exploring different styles and finishes to give modelers more possibilities to choose from.

The models are available in 15 mm, approximately 1/100 scale; 28 mm, approximately 1/56 scale; H0, in 1/87 scale; and 1/72 scale. These are very useful scales for tabletop gaming and miniatures, and they also make the bunkers suitable for many different types of dioramas.

Besides wargames, these papercrafts can work very well in science-fiction settings, military bases, space colonies, industrial installations, post-apocalyptic worlds, model railway layouts or simply as backgrounds for photographing miniatures.

The idea is simple and practical: inexpensive models that are easy to print and assemble and can quickly fill a gaming table. Printed on heavier paper or reinforced with cardstock, they can become quite sturdy while remaining easy to store and transport.

Since many different textures are available, you can also mix several versions to create small military complexes, defensive lines or futuristic bases without much work.

It is great to see Aníbal and Mónica exploring new directions with Edificios de Papel. The FUTURA Series keeps exactly what has always made the site so interesting: accessible and useful models made to actually be printed, assembled and used.

Batizada de Série FUTURA, esta nova linha entra de vez no terreno da ficção científica, dos cenários militares e dos mundos pós-apocalípticos.

A primeira coleção da série é formada por bunkers que compartilham basicamente a mesma estrutura, mas aparecem com muitas texturas diferentes. Há versões com placas metálicas, concreto, ferrugem, blindagens, superfícies industriais e acabamentos bastante desgastados. A mudança de textura faz bastante diferença e permite colocar vários bunkers juntos sem que o cenário pareça formado por cópias exatamente iguais.

Segundo Aníbal explica no Edificios de Papel, as texturas desta série foram criadas com auxílio de inteligência artificial, explorando diferentes estilos e acabamentos para oferecer mais possibilidades aos modelistas.

A proposta é simples e prática: modelos fáceis de imprimir e montar, baratos e capazes de preencher rapidamente uma mesa de jogo. Impressos em papel mais firme ou reforçados com cartolina, podem ficar bastante resistentes e ainda são fáceis de guardar e transportar.

Como existem muitas texturas disponíveis, também é possível misturar diferentes versões e criar pequenos complexos militares, linhas de fortificação ou bases futuristas sem muito trabalho.
