Build Your Own Seagull - A Fun Papercraft To Color And Dress Up
by Krokotak

Colorful seagull dress-up papercraft with sailor hat, scarf and fish by Krokotak

Krokotak, a Russian educational website for kids, has appeared many times here on the blog, and I have always liked the projects from this website because they start with very simple ideas and leave a good part of the work to children's imagination.

This friendly seagull is a great example. At first glance, it may look like just another easy papercraft to cut out and assemble, but the idea goes a little beyond simply putting the model together.

The template is provided in black and white, so even before assembling it, each child can decide what their seagull will look like. There are no right or wrong colors. Colored pencils, crayons, markers or paint can be used to create any combination they like.

And then comes the most amusing part. The seagull also works as a kind of dress-up paper toy, since the template includes several accessories that can be cut out, colored and combined in different ways.

There is a woolly hat, a beret, a scarf, a bandana, glasses and even little fish to complete the character. Using exactly the same template, one child can create a sailor seagull, another can make a beret-wearing artist, another a cool seagull with dark glasses, and so on.

The photos in this post show the possibilities very well. By changing only the colors and accessories, each seagull gets a completely different personality. And there is nothing stopping children from inventing new accessories using scraps of paper, such as hats, ties, bags or anything else their imagination suggests.

The base itself is also part of the fun, creating a small setting for the bird while allowing the finished model to stand upright. In the end, we have something almost like a little paper character with its own tiny piece of beach.

Besides being fun, this activity brings several things together in a single project: coloring, cutting, assembling, combining shapes and colors and, most importantly, creating something personal. If several children make the same model, it is very unlikely that any two seagulls will look exactly alike.

As with so many other Krokotak projects that have already appeared here on Papermau, the idea is simple, accessible and does not require any special materials. Paper, scissors, glue and something to color with are practically all that is needed.

So print the template, spread some pencils and markers across the table and let each little artist create their own seagull. I think the most interesting part will be discovering what kind of character appears at the end.

Build your own seagull papercraft to color and dress up for kids by Krokotak

Shima-Enaga Bird And Komugi Dog Papercrafts - by MONOcraft

Shima-Enaga bird and Komugi dog free to download papercrafts by MONOcraft - cute Japanese paper models

Here are two very cute papercrafts from Japan, created by MONOcraft. One is a tiny Japanese bird called Shima-enaga and the other is Komugi, the little dog from the Japanese animated series Wonderful Precure!

The first model is the Shima-enaga, a small bird found in Japan that is well known for its round body, white feathers and cute appearance. MONOcraft turned this little bird into a very nice papercraft with simple shapes and a slightly faceted look that works really well with paper.

The whole bird fits on just one sheet of paper. There are not many parts, but the finished model has a lot of personality and looks especially nice when displayed on a shelf, a desk or even among some small plants.

MONOcraft also made a video tutorial showing the complete assembly process. This is always useful, especially with small models like this, where the order in which the parts are glued can make things much easier.

The second model is Komugi, the little dog from Wonderful Precure!, a Japanese animated TV series produced by Toei Animation that started airing in Japan in February 2024. Komugi is a Papillon dog and one of the main characters of the story.

Komugi is a little more detailed than the bird. This papercraft takes two sheets and has separate parts for the big ears, legs, tail and the little pink bow. There are two versions of the first sheet, so you can build Komugi with her mouth open or closed. The second sheet is the same for both versions. The large eyes and happy expression give the finished model that very cute Japanese kawaii look.

There is also a complete video tutorial for Komugi, showing how the pieces come together. Since this model has more parts than the Shima-enaga, watching the video before starting the assembly is probably a good idea.

I could not find a personal name clearly connected to the creator of these papercrafts, so I think MONOcraft is the safest and most correct credit to use. The Shima-enaga takes only one sheet and Komugi takes two, with two different facial expressions to choose from. Both models also have video tutorials to help with the assembly.

Two simple and charming Japanese papercrafts that should look great together on a shelf.

Shima-Enaga bird free papercraft by MONOcraft - cute Japanese bird paper model
Komugi dog papercraft from Wonderful Precure by MONOcraft - cute Japanese free paper model

Tanaka Masahiko is a Japanese papercraft designer who shares an impressive and remarkably varied collection of original paper models on his page at Note.

One of the most interesting aspects of his work is precisely the great variety of subjects. His collection includes all kinds of animals, such as dogs, sheep, donkeys, sharks, penguins, turtles, fish, squirrels and many other creatures, including some particularly small and cute models that make browsing his page even more enjoyable.

Fans of Japanese pop culture will also find plenty of interesting things there. There are several papercrafts inspired by Pokémon, including Eevee, Flareon, Umbreon, Glaceon, Psyduck, Charmander, Charizard, Gardevoir, Gible, Garchomp and Persian. Tanaka has also created anime and manga characters such as Frieren, Fern, Stark and Eisen, from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

And, of course, his gallery also includes some giant and iconic creatures from Japanese popular culture, such as different versions of Godzilla and also Gamera, two of Japan's most famous kaiju. There are also dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus Rex and Parasaurolophus, showing that his work goes far beyond a single theme or style.

Another point worth highlighting is that, as far as can be seen throughout his page, the papercrafts are accompanied by PDF templates available for free download, making his work even more interesting for modelers and papercraft enthusiasts. In many cases, he also provides assembly instructions, difficulty information and useful tips to make building the models easier.

According to the designer himself, his papercrafts are created using Art of Illusion, Pepakura Designer, Inkscape and even tools developed by himself, a combination that helps explain the distinctive appearance and clever construction of his models.

With animals, dinosaurs, Pokémon, anime and manga characters, kaiju and many other curious subjects, Tanaka Masahiko's page is a real little treasure for anyone who enjoys discovering original papercrafts created by Japanese designers.

Honey Bee Papercraft With Moving Stinger - One-Sheet Model
by Suzuki Apiary Hachimitsuya

Realistic honey bee papercraft model with wings, legs and moving stinger displayed on a wooden surface

This curious papercraft represents a honey bee at a scale approximately ten times larger than the real insect. Despite its rather impressive size when finished, the entire model is made up of only nine pieces, all arranged on a single sheet of paper. The textures were created using real images, giving the body, wings and legs a much more convincing appearance than we usually find in such simple models.

The pieces form the head, thorax, abdomen, wings, antennae, legs, internal structure and stinger. The body is assembled from three rounded sections, while all six legs are combined into a single foldable piece. This clever solution greatly reduces the number of separate parts, although assembling the legs and some of the smaller tabs will require a little patience, a good pair of scissors and perhaps the help of tweezers.

The most amusing detail is that this is not merely a static model. The papercraft includes a very simple mechanism that makes the stinger move in and out of the end of the abdomen when the head of the bee is pressed. It is a small piece of paper engineering that makes the model especially interesting for children, school displays or anyone who enjoys papercrafts with moving parts.

The wings can also be attached at different angles, allowing the modeler to build the bee with its wings fully open or in a more closed position. Once the model is complete, the position of the legs, antennae and wings can be carefully adjusted with the fingers, giving the insect a more natural and dynamic appearance.

Although all the original written explanations are in Japanese, this should not discourage anyone. The assembly page is practically a complete photographic tutorial, showing everything from cutting out the pieces to joining the head, thorax and abdomen, attaching the legs, antennae and wings and installing the moving stinger mechanism.

The photographs are large, clear and show every stage of the assembly process in considerable detail. There is also a video tutorial on YouTube that follows the entire construction. This means that it is perfectly possible to build the bee without understanding a single word of Japanese. Depending on the browser settings, the text on the website may also appear automatically translated into English or another language.

As for the type of bee represented by the model, the page simply calls it a mitsubachi, a Japanese word meaning honey bee. However, judging by the shape of the body, the presence of the stinger and the background of the company offering the model, it most likely represents a worker bee of the species Apis mellifera, commonly known as the western honey bee or European honey bee.

It does not appear to represent a queen or a drone. The body, head and abdomen have the typical proportions of a worker, which is also the kind of bee we usually see visiting flowers, collecting nectar and pollen and helping to protect the hive. The template does not officially provide the scientific name of the species, however, so this identification should be understood as the most likely possibility.

The model is offered for free by Suzuki Apiary Hachimitsuya, a traditional beekeeping company located in Suzaka, in the Japanese prefecture of Nagano. Founded in 1923, the company has been working with beekeeping and honey production for more than a century.

The website is not devoted exclusively to papercrafts. It contains information about beekeeping, honey, recipes, bee related products, galleries, contests and other educational activities connected with these small but extremely important insects. The template of this bee was originally printed on the back of leaflets included with the company’s products, but fortunately it was also made available as a free download.

Other insect related models can be found on the same website, including an enormous Asian giant hornet and a Japanese dragonfly. This turns the page into a small and unexpected collection of educational models, perfect for anyone who enjoys papercrafts inspired by nature.

It is a single sheet project that should be relatively quick to build, but the finished result is unusual and full of personality. The thin legs may be the most challenging part, but the rounded body, realistic wings and simple moving stinger mechanism make the effort worthwhile. It is a great little papercraft for anyone who would like to place a piece of nature on the worktable without the risk of receiving a real sting.

Step-by-step photo instructions showing how to assemble the one-sheet honey bee papercraft and its moving stinger

As peças formam a cabeça, o tórax, o abdômen, as asas, as antenas, as pernas, a estrutura interna e o ferrão.

As pernas finas talvez sejam a parte mais trabalhosa, porém o corpo arredondado, as asas realistas e o pequeno mecanismo do ferrão compensam o esforço.

Ravage Doggy Mecha Creature Papercraft In PDO Format
by Szigetiart

Ravage Doggy mecha creature papercraft in PDO format by Szigetiart via Pepakura Community

Created by the talented designer Szigetiart and originally published at the official Pepakura Community website, this curious papercraft called “Ravage Doggy” is a great example of the creativity and technical quality often found in the international papercraft scene. Combining stylized shapes, mechanical details and a playful yet slightly menacing appearance, the model has a strong visual presence and will certainly appeal to fans of robotic creatures, science fiction and videogame-inspired characters.

The model is hosted at the Pepakura Community website, an online platform managed by Tamasoft, the Japanese company responsible for creating Pepakura Designer and Pepakura Viewer, two of the most important programs in the world of papercrafting. For many years, the Pepakura Community has served as a meeting point for designers and hobbyists from all around the world, allowing creators to publish their works, exchange experiences and share original templates in PDO format.

Unlike traditional PDF papercrafts, PDO files are interactive and can be viewed in three dimensions through the Pepakura Viewer software. This allows users to rotate the model, zoom in on specific parts and better understand the assembly process before cutting and folding the pieces. Because of this, PDO-based models are especially popular among more experienced hobbyists and designers who create detailed and complex projects.

To view and print this model, you will need the Free Version of Pepakura Viewer. When opening the file, a password request window may appear. Simply ignore it and click the option “Open with Pepakura Viewer,” which appears just below the password field. The model will open normally in viewing mode and can be printed without problems.

If you still do not have Pepakura Viewer installed on your computer, don’t worry: at the end of this post, just below the download link for this model, you will also find the link to download the official software for free directly from the Tamasoft website.

My thanks to Szigetiart for creating and sharing this very original model with the whole papercraft community.

Ravage Doggy robotic dog papercraft model by Szigetiart showing detailed Pepakura paper parts
