Let's Help Rebuild Model Ship World - A Message To The Modeling Community

Today I'd like to share something a little different from our usual papercraft posts, but something that I believe is important for everyone who enjoys scale modeling, regardless of the medium.

Recently, Model Ship World, one of the world's most respected ship modeling forums, suffered a devastating cyberattack that resulted in the loss of nearly twenty years of accumulated content. Thousands of build logs, photographs, historical references, tutorials and discussions disappeared, representing one of the greatest losses the modeling community has ever experienced.

The good news is that Model Ship World is already back online. The forum has been rebuilt and the community has immediately begun the long process of moving forward. While the original archive cannot be recovered, the people who made the forum such a special place are still there, ready to build its future together.

This is where former members can make a real difference.

If you were once part of Model Ship World and still have copies of your own build logs, project photographs, PDF tutorials, downloaded files or archived discussions saved on your computer or external drives, the MSW team would love to hear from you. Any material you can share may help recover valuable pieces of the forum's history and preserve knowledge that would otherwise be lost forever.

Even if you don't have any files to contribute, you can still help by sharing this information. There may be former members who have no idea that old folders sitting on a hard drive could now become an important part of rebuilding the forum's historic collection.

Behind every photograph, every tutorial and every build log are countless hours generously shared by modelers who simply wanted to help others enjoy this wonderful hobby. Preserving that knowledge is one of the things that keeps our community alive.

Hoje gostaria de compartilhar algo um pouco diferente dos nossos posts habituais sobre papercrafts, mas que acredito ser importante para todos que apreciam o modelismo em escala, independentemente do material utilizado.

Recentemente, o Model Ship World, um dos mais respeitados fóruns de modelismo naval do mundo, sofreu um devastador ataque cibernético que resultou na perda de quase vinte anos de conteúdo acumulado. Milhares de registros de montagem, fotografias, pesquisas históricas, tutoriais e discussões desapareceram, representando uma das maiores perdas que a comunidade de modelismo já enfrentou.

A boa notícia é que o Model Ship World já está novamente online. O fórum foi reconstruído e sua comunidade iniciou imediatamente o longo processo de seguir em frente. Embora o arquivo histórico original não possa ser recuperado, as pessoas que fizeram do MSW um lugar tão especial continuam reunidas e determinadas a construir um novo capítulo para o fórum.

É aí que antigos membros podem fazer uma enorme diferença.

Se você já participou do Model Ship World e ainda possui em seu computador ou em um HD externo cópias de seus registros de montagem, fotografias de projetos, tutoriais em PDF, arquivos para download ou até mesmo discussões arquivadas, a equipe do MSW ficaria muito feliz em receber esse material. Qualquer contribuição pode ajudar a recuperar parte da história do fórum e preservar conhecimentos que, de outra forma, estariam perdidos para sempre.

Magic Floating Market Boat Papercraft For RPG And Wargames Free Download - by RPGToons

This very original fantasy papercraft was created by Rose and Niels, the duo behind the RPGToons profile on Patreon, where this model is available for free download. Known for their creative designs aimed at tabletop games, they usually produce models that go beyond simple decorative pieces.

This model represents a floating market boat, something that seems to have come straight out of a fantasy book or a dream. The design combines a small wooden vessel with the structure of a traveling shop, creating a unique piece that works both as decoration and as a functional object.

Signs in indecipherable languages announce the products that can be seen scattered throughout the boat: cauldrons, stationery items, tools, inventions, toys, magic wands, bundles of medicinal herbs, armor, medallions, jewelry, potions, rare books, musical instruments, Persian rugs, chests, barrels, crates and all kinds of trinkets make up the cargo of this magical and mysterious boat.

There is also a staircase connecting the levels, a side hook that resembles a small crane, and a crescent moon ornament on top, reinforcing the fantasy atmosphere.

The open structure allows you to see shelves, fabrics and the goods that can be arranged throughout the model according to the builder’s preference and creativity.

One of the most interesting aspects is its functionality. The entire upper section can be removed, revealing an internal compartment inside the hull. This space can be used to store dice, cards, tokens or small accessories, making the model perfect for RPGs and wargames, combining scenery and utility in a single piece.

This is a great example of how papercraft can go beyond traditional models, becoming something interactive and useful. A creative and very well thought-out piece that certainly stands out on any tabletop or collection.

Conhecidos por seus designs criativos voltados para jogos de mesa, eles costumam produzir modelos que vão além de simples peças decorativas.

Este modelo representa um barco de mercado flutuante, algo que parece ter saído diretamente de um livro de fantasia ou de um sonho. O design mistura uma pequena embarcação de madeira com a estrutura de uma loja itinerante, criando uma peça única que funciona tanto como decoração quanto como objeto funcional.

Um dos pontos mais interessantes é sua funcionalidade. Toda a parte superior pode ser removida, revelando um compartimento interno dentro do casco. Esse espaço pode ser usado para guardar dados, cartas, fichas ou pequenos acessórios, tornando o modelo perfeito para RPG e wargames, unindo cenário e utilidade em uma única peça.

Este é um ótimo exemplo de como o papercraft pode ir além dos modelos tradicionais, se tornando algo interativo e útil. Uma peça criativa e muito bem pensada, que certamente se destaca em qualquer mesa ou coleção.

Steampunk Sub Marine Explorer Papercraft - Free Printable PDF by RocketmanTan

This beautiful papercraft features a steampunk-style submarine called Sub Marine Explorer, inspired by one of the earliest real submersible vessels ever created during the nineteenth century, a time when inventors were still experimenting with ways to explore the ocean depths long before modern submarines existed. 

The design blends historical engineering with a retro industrial aesthetic, featuring circular portholes, visible rivets and a solid, mechanical structure that gives the model a very distinctive and eye-catching look.

The model was created by designer Bryan Tan, aka RocketmanTan, and is available for free download on his DeviantArt page. The template comes in 03 well-organized pages, including all the parts needed to build the submarine, along with details such as propeller, rudder and optional elements that enhance the final result. 

Although the exact scale is not specified, the finished model appears to be compact, making it perfect for display on desks or as part of small themed dioramas.

The assembly follows a classic papercraft structure, with an internal spine and segmented sections that shape the hull, similar to techniques used in more advanced ship models. The pages clearly show the lower hull, upper hull, conning tower and small details like portholes and surface textures, making the building process easier and helping achieve a clean and accurate final model.

The real Sub Marine Explorer, which inspired this model, was designed in the 1860s by German-American engineer Julius H. Kroehl and is considered one of the first submarines capable of diving and resurfacing on its own. 

It was used in pearl diving operations in Panama, allowing workers to collect oysters directly from the ocean floor. Another remarkable feature was its pressurized chamber system, which allowed divers to exit the vessel underwater, something quite advanced for its time. 

The submarine could also reach greater depths than most vessels of its era, making it a true pioneer in underwater exploration technology.

Another nice feature of this papercraft is the inclusion of a simple display base with a seabed background, adding a bit of scenery that enhances the overall presentation and transforms the model into a small display piece rather than just a standalone object.

This is one of those projects that can appeal to both beginners and more experienced modelers, as it combines a relatively simple build with a unique and historically inspired final result. 

The model can be downloaded for free from the author’s DeviantArt page, making it a great addition for anyone interested in steampunk designs, submarines or unusual papercraft subjects.

The images below show the real Sub Marine Explorer, the historic submarine that inspired this papercraft. What we see today is the original hull, now abandoned and partially corroded by time, located on a beach in the Pearl Islands, Panama, where it has remained since the late 1860s.

Below that, the original technical blueprint reveals the internal structure of the submarine, highlighting its compressed air compartments, ballast areas and the crew working chamber, offering a clear view of how this ingenious machine once operated.

A montagem segue um sistema clássico de papercraft, com estrutura interna formada por uma espinha central e seções segmentadas que dão forma ao casco do submarino, algo que lembra bastante técnicas usadas em modelos navais mais complexos. 

As páginas mostram claramente as partes do casco inferior, superior, torre de comando e detalhes como escotilhas e rebites, o que ajuda bastante durante o processo de montagem e garante um resultado final bem fiel ao conceito original.

O Sub Marine Explorer real, que inspira este modelo, foi um dos primeiros submarinos utilizados para exploração e trabalho subaquático, tendo sido projetado na década de 1860 por Julius H. Kroehl. 

Uma curiosidade interessante é que ele foi utilizado para coleta de pérolas, algo bastante inovador para a época, permitindo que mergulhadores trabalhassem em maiores profundidades. Outra curiosidade é que o submarino utilizava um sistema primitivo de pressurização, o que infelizmente causou problemas de saúde na tripulação devido ao pouco entendimento sobre descompressão naquele período.

Outro detalhe interessante deste papercraft é a inclusão de uma base simples com cenário submarino, incluindo pequenos elementos decorativos que simulam o fundo do mar, o que ajuda a valorizar ainda mais o modelo quando montado. Isso transforma o conjunto em uma pequena peça de exibição, e não apenas um modelo isolado.

Este é um daqueles projetos que agradam tanto iniciantes quanto modelistas mais experientes, já que combina uma montagem relativamente acessível com um resultado final cheio de personalidade e história.

WWII Rhine Ferry Siebelfähre SF 311 Detailed Papercraft In 1:72 Scaleby Kallboys

This papercraft model represents the Siebelfähre SF 311, a Rhine River ferry used in the period following World War II, when many bridges had been destroyed and alternative means of transportation became essential.

Created by the German group Kallboys, this is model number 97 from the Mondorfer Bastelbögen series, well known for recreating historical subjects with a strong sense of realism, detail and context.

The Siebelfähre ferries were originally developed during the war and later adapted for civilian use, helping reconnect cities such as Bonn and Beuel by transporting vehicles, goods and passengers across the Rhine.

This model is presented in 1:72 scale and its numbers are truly impressive, with 1309 parts distributed across 83 pages, including 51 pages of detailed instructions and 32 printable sheets with the parts themselves. It goes far beyond the ferry alone, also including vehicles, figures and a display base, forming a complete historical scene.

Because of the high level of complexity and the large number of parts, many of them very small, this is clearly not a project for just any modeler, but rather for those who are organized, extremely patient and highly meticulous, also requiring good eyesight to deal with the finest details.

As with other releases in this series, the model can be assembled using basic tools such as scissors and a craft knife, and it also includes files suitable for laser cutting for those who prefer that option.

This is a challenging project especially recommended for experienced modelers and for anyone who appreciates historical subjects, realistic dioramas and richly detailed papercraft models.

Criado pelo grupo alemão Kallboys, este é o modelo número 97 da série Mondorfer Bastelbögen, conhecida por recriar temas históricos com grande senso de realismo, riqueza de detalhes e contexto.

As balsas do tipo Siebelfähre foram originalmente desenvolvidas durante a guerra e depois adaptadas para uso civil, ajudando a reconectar cidades como Bonn e Beuel ao transportar veículos, mercadorias e passageiros através do rio.

O modelo está na escala 1:72 e impressiona pelos números, são 1309 peças distribuídas em um total de 83 páginas, sendo 51 páginas de instruções detalhadas e 32 folhas com as peças para impressão. E ele vai muito além da embarcação em si, incluindo também veículos, figuras e uma base de exibição, formando uma cena histórica completa.

Pelo nível de complexidade e pela quantidade de peças, muitas delas bastante pequenas, este definitivamente não é um projeto para qualquer modelista, mas sim para pessoas organizadas, muito pacientes e extremamente meticulosas, além de exigir também boa acuidade visual para lidar com os detalhes mais delicados.

Assim como outros modelos desta série, a montagem pode ser feita com ferramentas simples, como tesoura e estilete, e também há arquivos compatíveis com corte a laser para quem preferir esse método.

Trata-se de um projeto desafiador, especialmente indicado para modelistas mais experientes e para quem aprecia temas históricos, dioramas realistas e modelos em papel com alto nível de detalhamento.

Historic Japanese Ocean Liners in Paper - by NYK Maritime Museum

On the website of the NYK Maritime Museum there is a very interesting section dedicated to paper models of real ships, all presented as PDF files for those who enjoy assembling detailed miniatures. 

The models represent vessels that played an important part in Japanese maritime history, and each project comes with clear instructions, numbered pages and neatly organized layouts. 

Among the highlights is the Asuka II ocean liner, presented at a 1/800 scale and spread across 7 A4 sheets. The previous version, the Asuka, is also part of the collection, arranged over 6 A4 pages. 

There is also the LNG Flora, a gas transport vessel that requires 8 A4 sheets, and the NYK Castor, a large cargo ship that is the most extensive model of the group with 11 A4 sheets.

Its assembly guide was created by Toshimasa Mitsutake in 2002 and includes detailed folding instructions using valley and mountain folds to give the hull and superstructure their correct shapes. 

The NYK Maritime Museum, located in Yokohama, Japan, is dedicated to the history of NYK Line, one of the country’s most important maritime companies. The museum features historical documents, photographs, posters and physical models that illustrate the evolution of Japanese navigation over the decades. 

Although the museum has been temporarily closed since April 2023, the website remains active, offering historical content and these models that reflect the institution’s commitment to preserving and sharing maritime culture. 

The models available on this page combine aesthetics, accuracy and simplicity, allowing any enthusiast to recreate in paper some of the most emblematic NYK vessels. 

It is a set of models that blends hobby, history and design, perfect for anyone who enjoys nautical miniatures or simply likes the pleasure of building something with their own hands.

No site do NYK Maritime Museum existe uma seção muito interessante dedicada a modelos de navios em papel, todos apresentados em arquivos PDF para quem gosta de montar miniaturas detalhadas. 

Os modelos representam embarcações reais que marcaram a história da navegação japonesa, e cada projeto vem acompanhado de instruções claras, folhas numeradas e layouts bem organizados. 

Entre os destaques está o transatlântico Asuka II, que aparece na escala 1/800 e usa 7 folhas A4 para ser montado. A versão anterior, o Asuka, também está presente na coleção, distribuída em 6 folhas A4.

A Very Old And Rusty Cargo Ship Paper Model - by PapermauDownload Next Week!

Next week I’ll be posting a papercraft of a very old and rusty cargo ship here on the blog. It’s a variation of a model (photo below) that I first shared back in March 2013. 

Unfortunately, I no longer have the original templates, but I did find the 3D model I created in Sketchup at the time, and that’s what I’m using to build this new version. 

For today, just a few images. If everything goes well and nothing gets in the way, next week I’ll publish the templates for anyone who wants to build their own old, battered and rusty cargo ship.

Semana que vem vou publicar aqui no blog um papercraft de um navio cargueiro bem velho e enferrujado. Ele é uma variação de um modelo (foto acima) que postei em março de 2013. 

Infelizmente, eu já não tenho mais os templates originais, mas encontrei o modelo 3D que fiz no Sketchup naquela época, e é a partir dele que estou preparando esta nova versão. 

Por hoje, ficam só algumas imagens. Se tudo correr bem e nada me impedir, semana que vem publico os templates para quem quiser montar seu próprio navio cargueiro velho, surrado e enferrujado.
