The Real Things Taking a Sunbath

Comissioned by canon website, the Japanese designer Youichi Wada created this photorealistic paper model of a Marine Iguana. The marine iguana is a large reptile distributed in the Galapagos Islands, a part of Ecuador, South America. Its body reaches 120 to 150 cm in length. It feeds mainly on seaweed, meaning it is suited to the ocean, a trait which makes the marine iguana unique from other lizards. A marine iguana will bask in the sun for a long time to raise its body temperature enough, before entering the sea. Its laterally flattened tail is well-suited to swimming, and it has glands near its nose to expel excess salt ingested from the sea water. On its head are rough bumps, and on its neck and back is a row of spine-like scales, known as a crest. All four of its legs feature sharp claws, which have evolved to allow the marine iguana to cling firmly to rocks in the ocean and feed on the marine plants, even in the rapid currents found around the Galapagos Islands. - Canon

O designer japonês Youichi Wada criou esta Iguana Marinho especialmente para o site de papercraft da Canon. A iguana-marinha (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) é o único lagarto do mundo com hábitos marinhos e é uma das muitas espécies extraordinárias que vivem no arquipélago das Galápagos. Vive em zonas rochosas à beira-mar e alimenta-se de algas. Pode passar até uma hora debaixo de água. Galápagos forma um arquipélago na costa da América do Sul. Este arquipélago é formado por várias ilhas vulcânicas que e nunca foram ligadas a uma massa de terra, por isso acredita-se que as iguanas atravessaram sobre a água, da América do Sul para essa ilhas há cerca de 10 a 15 milhões de anos. Um fenômeno curioso são as chamadas iguanas híbridas, nascidas do cruzamento de uma iguana-marinha macho com uma iguana-terrestre fêmea. As iguanas híbridas podem viver tanto na terra quanto no mar.
