Psycho is a 1960 American thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, and Anthony Perkins. The film is based on the screenplay by Joseph Stefano, who adapted it from the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch. The novel was loosely inspired by the crimes of Wisconsin murderer and grave robber Ed Gein, who lived just 40 miles from Bloch.The film depicts the encounter between a secretary, Marion Crane (Leigh), hiding at a secluded motel after embezzling money from her employer, and the motel's disturbed owner and manager, Norman Bates (Perkins), and the aftermath of their encounter.
Psycho initially received mixed reviews, but outstanding box office returns prompted a re-review which was overwhelmingly positive and led to four Academy Award nominations. Psycho is now considered one of Hitchcock's best films and is highly praised as a work of cinematic art by international critics. The film spawned two sequels, a prequel, a remake, and a television movie spin-off. In 1992, the film was selected to be preserved by The Library of Congress at The National Film Registry.

Psycho, que no Brasil ficou conhecido como Psicose, é um filme americano de 1960, de suspense e terror, dirigido pelo mestre do suspense Alfred Hitchcock.Hitchcock comprou anonimamente os direitos do livro de Robert Bloch, que deu origem ao roteiro do filme; ele pagou onze mil dólares e depois comprou todas as cópias disponíveis no mercado para que ninguém o lesse e, consequentemente, seu final não fosse revelado.
Psicose custou 800 mil dólares e faturou 50 milhões de dólares nas bilheterias do mundo inteiro.
O filme foi escolhido como o 11º melhor filme de todos os tempos e o melhor do gênero horror pela revista Entertainment Weekly. O filme foi eleito o 18º melhor de todos os tempos pelo AFI (Instituto Americano de Cinema).
No site Rotten Tomatoes, que reúne críticas de cinema do mundo inteiro, Psicose quase atingiu a perfeição: ganhou 98% de aprovação.
Em 1998 o diretor Gus Van Sant fez um remake do filme, com Vince Vaughn e Anne Heche nos papéis de destaque. No elenco ainda contava com Julianne Moore no papel da irmã de Marion. - Wikipedia
